Overflows Are Possible
One big problem in overflow is people don’t care and they stand there AFK. Then they get killed and someone actually playing gives them a rez taking away resources from the fight. Wash and repeat until the timer goes down.

Which is exactly what needs to change. =/ What I saw today proved that it is possible, but with all of the afkers who just don’t care (more than what you would find in a regular server), is the main reason we lost. Our organization could have used more work for sure, but it went pretty well considering. If people put effort into overflows like they do in their home servers, they may actually win.

Sadly I doubt that will ever happen in overflow and sadly I doubt I’ll ever get to actually do the event on my home server any time soon. I might get in once it has been done into the ground and then there will be like 7 people there. :P
here is a little tip on how to get to your home server:
-do NOT try to get in the map 5 minutes before the fight, for best results you should get in as soon as the event ends so you can take part on the next one.
-if you still can’t get in, ask to a guildie or a friend that is in the home server to party up with you, that way you can join him/her on the home server
-maps have a soft and a hard cap of players, when the soft cap is reached you will go to overflow, but doing the party trick you will get in immediately. If the hard cap is reached there is no way to get in the map, BUT! you just keep trying to join your friend, at some point someone is gonna log out or get out of the map and if you keep doing the party trick you will get that spot.
still Anet has to address this issue, overflow maps are ok for normal events, but this kind of thing, that require coordinated group effort, it totally ruins the experience
Seems to me they should just do away with the soft cap entirely or at the very least allow players on that home instance to exceed it without having to resort to abusing join but that wouldn’t really do much for overflows.
Our overflow guild with specific leaders being myself and a few key others hunt out overflows and ferry in as many from our random guild we threw together called overflow one [teq]. We just got our 2nd successful overflow teq kill. =)

Try 2 hours trying to get in with some people reporting 4-5 hour waits. I’m not even going to waste my time with it anymore. I can watch a video if I want to see it die. The rewards are about the same. :P
Just killed Teq in an overflow with the Overflow One[Teq] guild and many others, with over 2 minutes to spare.

Killing tequatl with a guild on an overflow doesn’t really count as an overflow kill.
Yup Overflow One is at our second kill and will probably continue to chop at Teq for a long time from now. Today we killed him at our second try so thanks to all the people there that helped and good job!
As for OP’s post, yes I think it will be possible to do without voice coms BUT still coordination is needed AND people need to know what they have to do in order to succeed. A lot of the information is still spreading out there and until everyone experiences it a few times(the good way) it will still take some time for everyone to do their part well.
you make a post stating how communication is lacking on overflows, and then say the overflow one kill, which I have been apart of twice doesn’t count because it is a guild. That guild is completely formed of randoms from overflows that wanted that lvl of communication you are pointing out so we banded together and did so. Even then we do not find a dead overflow and get 100+ people in, everything has been on populated overflows with us spamming ts so much people cant ignore it, get on, and listen to our organizers.
Right, I shall divulge one secret about Overflow One.
…We have Lys. You go decide what that means.
EDIT: Overflow One [Teq] has people from like six different servers, and that’s in quantities more than three. It was formed on an overflow, from people who wanted to take the shot of tequila. So technically yes, it is an overflow kill.

Came from an overflow that I was on for my daily earlier. Best organized overflow I’ve ever been on – got Teq to about 55%
The main problem were: Afk’ers, people doing other things on map (completion, other events), and a lack of good, dedicated turret users. Atleast one hylek turret was frequently unmanned, and another was destroyed twice.
There were at least a dozen people afk littered around the shore.
/Supplyinfo before the fight showed ~65 people in the main zergball and another ~20 at each group of turrets.
Another part of the problem is that server mains (non overflow) are always at (soft) capacity, whereas overflows generally are not. Always gonna be less people on an overflow.
For the toast!
Can someone shoot me an invite to this Overflow One guild? That would be awesome.
I don’t have time (patience really) to sit and try to get into the main server (on SoR, good kittening luck) for hours. I have mostly given up hope on overflows.
I’ve been wandering overflows pretty much all night. My home server is dead. The last one I was in was well organized (had one guild on the turrets, and people actually stacked on a commander) and we got him down to 38% before running out of time.
But that was the best, every other overflow I’ve been in (about 15) hasn’t even hit the first megalaser.
OVERFLOW ONE [Teq] would love to have anyone who wants teq kills, we are up to 7 now. You can msg Lys, Ferox Hemlock, Trad Aphotic, Killchained, or Vex for an invite.
They should fix the queue system, for one. It’s been bugged for some time.
Then they should implement idle kicking, so it becomes more of a lucky draw of people who wants to play instead of afkers on the main waiting (evt. someone will work around an idle kick system, but generally it should make things better).
Other than that, what they should do is make sure that overflows are not unnecessarily created. Right now if you are in an overflow waiting to get into the main server, you might at some point be asked if you want to “Travel” to the main server. You click “Travel” and get sent to a less populated overflow, it’s like a Japanese “batsu”-game. This problem requires a fix.
Alternatively they should allow us to choose overflows. Much like how Age of Conan handled server instances. Have a UI element that lets us switch between overflows and also (alternatively) shows us the waiting-line for the main server. I realise this requires a bit of dev resources, maybe more than it’s warranted for right now, but I believe it’s something many people would be happy about seeing such a feature added to the game.
The only thing keeping people from downing Teq on overflows is people leaving the overflow to try and get into the main “instance”.
Instead of shuffling from overflow to overflow trying to get lucky, organize the overflow you’re already in and STAY THERE win or lose. If everyone does this, you’ve essentially created an instance for yourselves and it’ll make subsequent fights easier. Tried this today and downed Teq after 3 tries because it gave everyone a chance to get better coordinated with the people around them.
If an overflow has enough players, yes its possible. There are a few reasons why it will probably never happen though.
Firstly, AFKers. Even if they dont die or take players away from combat, they are still taking a spot on the map. People AFK because lets be honest, who wants to sit in a map for hours staring at their screen, that would drive me insane.
Secondly, coordination. The fight mechanics are simple, but to have enough dps to beat the timer, the dps zerg needs to be coordinated. This level of coordination 99% of the time requires TS.
Thirdly, if there is no leader, people just give up.
