Tequatl will need a pre-event soon
A couple minutes before he comes back (I’d say around 5 minutes), the meta even message changes and the world event shows that Tequatl is attacking (even if he isn’t there yet). There will always be someone who comes late.
If the fight stays such that a very large number of players are required to even stand a chance of doing this, I would go so far as to suggest the pre-event should be similar to the break out events in WvW and require a minimum of X players to gather / ready attempt to defeat the boss.

So there is a meta-event change? Ok then, I guess the timer I use just hasn’t updated for that yet.
That said, an event to give people while they gather before the main event is still not a bad idea.
One thing I thought was strange was that I recall ArenaNet stating Tequatl will have a massive event chain, the end event being the current fight. I may have misheard, as this was far before released (like PAX 2011, a year before the game came out, when Tequatl was first announced). However, the current dynamic story in Sparkfly surely leads up to a Dynamic event chain. The first places you encounter have Hyleks fleeing their homes in the North, while an undead ship attacks a vigil camp. Then Hyleks are trying to defend their sacred ground. Then it leads to a Sylvari training area or something, and then to Tequatl. I’m hoping that ArenaNet does add a massive event chain that requires a lot of players to make this fight interesting. But before ArenaNet does that, they need to somehow find a way for players to be rewarded for doing the event chain more than those that pop-up at the last second to fight Tequatl.
