…was spent in Sparkfly Fen, waiting for 6 hours to get into an overflow with my friends & guild to simply be presented with the “Server is full, have them guest over to yours instead.” message. So while they got four kills in a row, I got to stand in Sparkfly Fen spamming “Join party” and watching my overflow fail Tequatl four consecutive times. By the time I finally get in, everyone decides “Let’s call it a night.” and I’m left alone with PuGs who do even worse than the last server I was in. Now repeat three days in a row.

No. I’m done. No amount of reward, no entertainment value the boss has, no feeling of satisfaction is worth wasting three days of my time wrestling with the world’s worst overflow system. I generally like GW2. But I hate standing around, waiting to have fun, and then never actually having any fun.

“The holy trinity is bad. You spend too much time waiting to have fun instead of having it.” Well…yes, you do have to wait to find a healer or a tank…but eventually you do end up finding one and you can get on with life. In this situation, I have to wait, and it ends up not even happening, so I just waited for nothing.

I boycott Tequatl. If anyone needs me I’ll be wrecking stuff in sPvP or CoF.

I am afraid the only solution is to instance the fight. In fact, that is what on my server happens quite a lot: An overflow or low pop server is chosen (the pseudo instance) where the organized group can man the turrets and position its core fighters and experienced commanders.

The current situation is not very ideal…

This overflow-issue is really bad.

It’s really the same stuff every day: Come home from work, wait for about 3-4 hours in some overflow, watch the people fail over and over again, then finally get into main and fail there, because the people who did him successfully the last two times are done and commanders are leaving the field.

To be honest im not even trying to kill him on overflow anymore, as it is absolutely impossible to do without proper voice communication and a lot of preparation.

The worst part is that you can’t do anything else while standing like a fool in overflow as you might miss the “join main server”-window. How does this overflow-stuff work anyways? Do i get to pick a number and wait in line if I land on it or is it completely random when I will be able to switch on main? Why can’t there be some sort of counter which tells me: “You are #120 in line. It’ll take approx. 30 minutes until you can join your main”? At the moment you’re just standing there, staring at some random rock not knowing if it’ll take 10 minutes or 10 hours to get to your main.

Funfact, the queue is exploitable. Other players could be used as a Taxi to get their friends/guildmates to the front of the queue.
So its not even a case of you waiting and eventually getting in. You might never get in if other people get placed ahead of you in the queue over and over.

I’d imagine that the kill tequatl strategy will be refined to a point where pugs using random gear will be able to do it. That’ll take a bit of time… but by then, there should be no more overflow problems as the event is no longer fresh.

The only fear is that it may simply be impossible for a pug group to put out enough DPS in 15 minutes — that all depends on how much health Tequatl has.

The event is actually fun IF you can get on your home server if they are coordinated or lucky enough to get on an overflow that has a couple of guilds coordinating.

The biggest challenge of this event is the dealing with the overflows. An event of this magnitude/challenge does not work well with the overflow system.

Totally agree with the OP on his grief, this event is full of goods and bads, actually very good and extremely bad.

The good part is the difficulty, even if many of you that have failed it over and over again would disagree on this part with me, this is what make the event so exhilarating when you finally figure out the way to beat him and get the kill. It is what makes players creative and make them think back at the core mechanics of this game and how they can be used.

A secondary product from this encounter, at least for me personally, was that I got to see how a bunch of randoms from ALL across servers could come together and actually form Overflow One[Teq] but not only with the sole purpose of beating the boss but with a vision to help other people do it.

The bad, the horrible part is that of the overflow system. After all the joy(again in my personal experience, and maybe others of [Teq]) of being able to find the ways to kill the guy, growing into a huge guild, sparking new ideas, meeting new people, breaking through the barriers of home servers and not least but most important, having Fun!… after all that, each time we do a new attempt now, first of all we hit on the problem that we can’t get our friends inside the stupid overflow to have fun with us or some of us get stuck outside spamming for countless minutes, hours to get in, just so frustrating and bad.

The thing that bugs me the most is that I yet haven’t seen any official response from ANet responding to this overflow issue. I want to know at least that they are considering to fix it somehow. I would gladly give up the next 1 month of updates just for this system to get fixed so that we can again have fun with our friends and simply for the health of the game in general. This HAS to be Fixed!

After the initial anger and frustration with Teq I got my first skill by guesting to SBI (I thank them very much for their hospitality)and was blown away by how much fun it was. Then I joined the Tequatl Terror Squad (TTS)to be part of an organized group of people that will run this on a regular basis. We spent over an hour searching for an empty overflow and getting everyone in to beat him. Teq is a logistical nightmare and I hope they think of something to make it easier for everyone to get together on the same map.

1 Achievement away from ‘The Sunbringer’ and I’ve only attempted him 5 times (killed 3 times). And I didn’t waste my time trying to get into an overflow when I knew it would never happen.

TIPS:
1. Try joining right after a Kill or Fail. People usually leave afterwards. So your best bet to join a main server is then.
2. Try to play during peak hours for your best bet of a kill, and take a break from trying to get in. Took me over an hour the first time to get into Main server.
3. When trying to get into a Main Server, from overflow. Go to a waypoint near a Map transition ( Mount Maelstrom, Bloodtide Coast, Straits of Devastation) And walk back & forth between maps. This seems to have better luck and joining or at least that the general consensus.
4. If your server has a TS, Vent, Mumble, etc…. get on it! Chance are one of those channels will be filled with Teq killers. This will make it easier to find someone in Main Server, and find a competent group. Not to mention derive best play times.

Quick Note: Nothing is more rewarding in this game, then watching an entire map full of people and map chat exploding with “Yes. We won!” Etc… Comraderie at its finest.

And after all these countless posts of the issues going on with this event with overflows, guesting, afk, and displeasure in what has come from this event, we still have silence from Anet.
It would be nice to even have just one developer come in and make a statement about this, if there is something they have learned from it, and a fix is on the way.

1. Try joining right after a Kill or Fail. People usually leave afterwards. So your best bet to join a main server is then.

Thought so, too. But that never helped. Apparently enough people only seem to leave, when one of the commanders in charge calls it a day, which then causes most of the experienced people to leave as well. I’ve witnessed that quite a few times.

2. Try to play during peak hours for your best bet of a kill, and take a break from trying to get in. Took me over an hour the first time to get into Main server.

On our server (DE – Riverside) it seems quite the opposite. Consensus according to the TS server is, that exactly during that time there are to many random and afk players. This assumption might very well be wrong, but the result is that organized groups often try to avoid that time of the day. That of course doesn’t mean I’m able to get anywere near my main server during that time.

3. When trying to get into a Main Server, from overflow. Go to a waypoint near a Map transition ( Mount Maelstrom, Bloodtide Coast, Straits of Devastation) And walk back & forth between maps. This seems to have better luck and joining or at least that the general consensus.

Heard that a lot, too. There is also the group-taxi-invite mentioned before in this thread. Both would contradict the waiting-queue theory as you’d always be put at the end of the line again. I think ANet should give us at least a hint at how the overflow really works. There are far too many rumors about what helps getting to main and what doesn’t.

I really like the idea of Tequatl as a challenging encounter (like Liadri) and I don’t hope the nerf him, but there need to be improvements to the overflow mechanism.

Also shouldn’t they test such content before releasing it? Glad to see I’m not the only one frustrated with overflows. Don’t misunderstand me. I love the fight. The mechanics are a refreshing change of pace from “stand in one place and auto attack with zerg ball to victory,” and the difficulty forces coordination, cooperation, and an in depth understanding of the boss mechanics. Not only that, but the elation that is felt the first time you kill Tequatl is unrivaled, a seriously epic victory not to be undermined.

I just cannot deal with the overflow system, it is a barrier to grouping with my friends and guild and prevents me from being a part of their successes. It’s a terrible feeling to know what it takes to lead a map to victory against Tequatl, then look around the overflow you’re stuck in and realize “They don’t have the coordination do this.” Doomed to failure, you know it, and yet you’re stuck with them so you’re doomed too.

And that’s not touching on the other issues that Tequatl has like build obliteration (no conditions/berserker)…I think this is why most MMOs put content like this in instances, to avoid separating guilds/friends. In an instance you can control who assists in your fight. You can exclude AFK people, people who refuse to listen or get on teamspeak, people who are not guildies or friends, or even PUGs.

I’m not saying instancing is the only answer, but something needs to be done about this before many of us can consider even attempting Tequatl. At least I already have my Sunbringer title, so I can wait out the fixes.

This event is probably the most fun I’ve had and has really brought the PvE-side of our server together. That said, it’s by no means perfect and I think there’s certainly some polish that could be done to make the more frustrating bits a bit less frustrating. I don’t want anything with the difficulty changed mind you. But Teq’s schedule, overflows, AFKers and such do make an otherwise fun event a bit more of a chore. Too much “waiting for fun,” which certainly goes against GW2’s original philosophy.

This event is probably the most fun I’ve had and has really brought the PvE-side of our server together.

Its just a harder jormag, a raid boss in the open world requiring players to take specific actions at specific times, which is absolutely not dynamic at all, and ends up being an exercise in frustration because its reliant on too many ppl doing the right thing at the right time.

If anet really want to innovate these types of bosses should be made more dynamic.

This should be sticked.
I’m a day 1 GW1 player. Since the very beginning anet stated their game wasn’t based on how many hours you’ve spent on it, but on your skills. A grindless game finally, something different from WoW and many many others. kitten , I even received their signed christmas wishes postcard and I live on the other side of the globe. I know it has nothing to do with the event, but you’d think it’s a company that actually cares about the players. Is it really the same anet it once was?
Where’s the fun in this event? How do you even call a game that isn’t fun and just provides frustration? Cause it can’t be called “game” anymore. It becomes a job. A job is something you have to do even when you don’t like it.
This event is probably even worse than the karka one with everyone lagging and dcing. This is completely unplayable.
Seriously anet? Is any GM/dev ever going to answer here?

The Tequatl redesign is the worst content ArenaNet has added to the game to date and if this is the future of open world bosses in GW2 I feel a large portion of the playerbase will simply stop playing the game.

Two reasons:

1. Adding turrets as a necessity to win the fight. Absolute disaster as any random can jump into them and do absolutely nothing.

2. The mechanics of the new fight do not lend themselves to random players jumping in.

At this time unless you are part of a very organised guild and are willing to camp for hours at a time there is absolutely no point in attending the Tequatl fight. There are no loot drops if the boss has not been downed. I can not fathom why anyone would camp a boss for 6 hours with nothing to show for it.

ArenaNet was trumpeting the fact that Guild Wars 2 would represent the new paradigm of all inclusive content that leaves no one behind. Yet they seem to be finding the urge to return to old school MMO design irresistible hence we get a mess like the new Tequatl fight.

Sadly this will be yet another part of the game that is mostly left to rot as eventually no one will bother with it (especially after Boss Week finishes).

The answer to enjoying Teq is joining or or creating and guild focused on killing him (and future revamped world bosses). In it’s current state, Teq is impossible to do with 100 random pugs. You need to be a well organized Teq killing machine or you fail. I would like to see this instanced, no more waiting for a spawn timer. I would the instance keeping Teq as is (maybe even upping the difficulty a little) for those Guilds and have a dumbed down version for open world with reduce rewards (no chance of Teq weapon skin or mini).

I am surprised they did not leave Teq the way it was (or at least just have a tight timer). Teq is one of the signature bosses of GW2 and is used in many promotional videos. It stands to reason it would be a major drawcard to attract players to the game.

ArenaNet should create a new boss that is fully instanced and accessibly to guilds. It would solve many of the problems with the current situation.

It’s a shame they capped it at 5. Considering we’re a year in and new guilds are being formed specifically for these kinds of world events, certainly be nice if they’d consider raising the maximum number of guilds for an account.

Couple of thoughts…First, @Constantine.7812, if you had bothered to read what I typed out you would know I was not complaining about the actual fight, but the process that is required in order to be included in your own guild’s fight. I’ve fought Tequatl around 6 or 7 times. I’ve killed him three times. But I’ve been present for at least 20 failures while trying to join my successful friends/guild so I can help them organize the raid. It’s even worse that while I was stuck in the PUG-overflow, I knew the map would fail because of a lack of coordination.

Personally I like the boss, I just hate overflows. I hate the way this is open world content that can so easily exclude one from their peer group simply because an AFK PUG decided to wait between Tequatl fights in your guild’s agreed upon overflow. Would have participated in those failed Tequatl fights if I didn’t have to stand somewhere safe and spam my “Join Party In Sparkfly Fen” button over and over again hoping to get taxied in to no avail.

I don’t want this thread to be about “Oh yeah, I love Tequatl” or “Oh god, the fight is terrible.” No, I want this thread to be a plea for ArenaNet to fix the overflow system. How people can bypass the Queue with taxi-ing, how you can get locked out of your guild’s overflow due to PUGs or other people taxi-ing, how AFK people can lock you out of a queue, how you have to constantly spam “Join In Sparkfly Fen” in order to even have a chance at joining your friends, etc. These problems are a blockade to content that arises from a poorly designed and quickly implemented overflow system that desperately needs to be overhauled. The problem is compouned by the fact that ArenaNet has now created content that requires a full map. By virtue of this fact, for every fight there will people stuck somewhere they don’t want to be. And that’s not good. That means every single time some people try to kill Tequatl, there will always be those locked out, excluded, forced to not participate just because they weren’t lucky enough to get in. Exclusion may be a necessity, but for the love of God, don’t have it based on who’s lucky enough to taxi in at the right time.

EDIT: Also, Tequatl doesn’t have that great loot. I think in those three kills I got maybe 5 rares and a buttload of green/blues. For the amount of time/effort I spent organizing people, it’s really not worth it. You’d be far better doing Frostgorge champion farming if you really were after gear. I simply continued to Tequatl because I enjoyed the fight and the sense of victory from overcoming him. But it’s absolutely not worth trying to fight with the overflow system. Not anymore since I already have Sunbringer.

The only things I really want out of Teq is the mini and the Teq weapon skin. Would bve nice if you were guaranteed and exotic once per day for all the trouble you go through to organize. It’s takes a solid hour to taxi everyone to the same map. I could make 10g and buy a couple exotics in that time doing other stuff.

Be careful what you wish for, Anet might just give it to you “HoT”

I don’t really want them balancing rewards/difficulty until they address interface/server mechanic issues or it will just exasperate everything lol. But yes, you’re right, rewards probably should be better.

Hypothetical ANet Design Meeting

Dev1: Some people are asking for raids.
Dev2: If we do instanced raids, a certain segment of the player-base is going to go through the roof.
Dev3: What if we redesign Tequatl to require coordination by a minimum of 80 players? We could tie Living World Achievements to it, put in a mini and an exclusive skin. Everyone will want to do it. Then we make the required coordination things that will break easily with randoms involved. In addition, the overflow system will separate players so that it becomes highly frustrating. Some servers will manage it, after all players are endlessly inventive.
Dev1: Why is that a good idea? Do you want to cheese people off?
Dev2: No, think about it. “That segment of the population” will demand we put that kind of content in an instance. It’s brilliant!

Getting Mini Liadri felt like a HUGE achievement, it was as if I felt like a better player after getting it.

Beating tequatl felt like “I finally got into a good overflow, because my main server seems to be full of afk trolls… and this loot sucks.”

I’m not against open world raid bosses like this, but add a sanctum sprint afk kicking when the boss spawns. I hate seeing 20+ afkers near the turrets for the whole fight (dead of course).

I’d imagine that the kill tequatl strategy will be refined to a point where pugs using random gear will be able to do it.

The teq strategy is easy and really, can’t be refined any more. The execution of this strategy however is beyond ability of any pug big enough to have any hope of killing the dragon.

Actions, not words.

+1

I finally manage to get into TC. We fail the first attempt, we kill him in the second. I will never go to SF in a very long time.

I will always be grateful to all the people in TC at the time but no more Teq for me.

It was great and exciting to kill him BUT, 1 week to get into a good server and find a good group of people is against every single reason I bought GW2 and definitely is not fun (I only tried because as a player I must do everything the game have to offer but I didn’t did it for the challenge or the fun offer by the event itself).

Why fix the Necromancer for free when we can charge $$$ for the Revenant
