Its not pure luck. Know where you server is, look for an open spot and try you best to get in. It took me over an hour but I got in tonight for 2 kills on separate toons. 5 Kills and counting.

You need everyone there committed to doing the event correctly and deferring positions (particularly turrets) to the players that know how to use them.
That’s the main difficulty, getting 100 people together and doing their jobs.
