Another alliance? really?
Hoof-hop alliance! Bahahahaha that’s great.
That said, I doubt Scarlet has anything to do with this. The Nightmare Court probably loathe Scarlet as much as she loathes them. I do like this living story so far, but yes, I’d enjoy seeing stories more based in Guild Wars 1’s lore.

But Guild Wars 1 lore is Guild Wars 2 lore. Let’s not lose sight on the fact that this is a sequel.
And nope, it’s Scarlet. I can think of at least once NPC in game that talks about how she suspects Scarlet of being behind the Toxic Alliance. If that’s not enough, this should be. Look at the “coming soon.”

If you’re talking about Scarlet and her little alliances, agreed.

Do a seed event in one of the WvW borderlands; you will be more than sure to change your mind about it not being Scarlet.
Next alliance has humans, dwarfs, gnomes, elves, manbeargoats, werewolves, and pandas.
Who decides what the lore is? Players? Or the authors and developers? Granted, there are cases where they muck up their own lore a bit, like “gargoyles for no reason in the Mad King’s realm even though we teased you about the disappearance of gargoyles from GW1”. But they are the ones writing the story and you have no idea where it’s all headed or how various threads will come together. They already know the ending and every update moves us closer to it.
This is the most lore-heavy update yet: diving into the krait and their obsession with their ancient prophets and obelisks. I’m loving it.
Amen! And plus 1.
I’m not going to rag on Anet like so many players do about every little thing, but I do dislike Scarlet, and if she ends up disappearing off the top of the tower in a puff of smoke again just as we’re about the fight her, it will be quite irritating. This seems like such an epic development in the story, and the perfect time for a monumental, climactic moment for her…and by that I mean her death.
Having said that, I still have no bloody clue what she’s doing getting all these groups together, and no doubt ANet want to tell us that before they do her in, or at least give some big twist that hasn’t come yet…so I imagine we’ll see her around again until she can give her big, final villain monologue.
Gandara
On the plus side they will soon run out of factions that can form alliances with other factions. Look at what they have already quickly burned through, Dredge/Flame Legion, Inquest/Pirates, now it’s Krait/ NC.
Unless they start an Alliance of alliances, well i guess they already did that with the random Lollet invasions which are still happening for some strange reason.
Pretty soon there won’t be anything left to form an alliance with, except the alliance of players who are bored with GW2’s much hyped LW.

It’s very clearly Scarlet’s doing https://d3b4yo2b5lbfy.cloudfront.net/wp-content/uploads/2013/10/9af5a11-12_NextHero_EN.jpg
In the background is a Champion Toxic Hybrid (some krait/nightmare court hybrid) only reason why I know the name is because there’s a datamined mini that was found with it.
You people sure do like skipping to the end of the book and reading it backwards, then griping that everything was given away….
Let them tell their tale. You don’t necessarily have to like or click with the entire cast of characters, but you’re not the one writing the tale either.

If this were a book or a TV series I would have stopped reading/watching a long time ago out of boredom , no need to skip to the end.
Fortunately it’s a game, so there’s things other than LW to do. Which i happily do and i try my darndest to just avoid LW content as much as possible. However LW is like a bad dorm mate you’re stuck with in college that you can’t get rid of.

Its not “skipping to the end” when 1. they’ve done this 4 times so far and 2. they tell you its her doing on the FRONT PAGE. And nobody is complaining about things being “given away” anyways. We’re all complaining because we’re sick and tired of scarlet. She’s got the depth of bad Chris Nolan’s Joker fan fic soaking in a puddle.

They are sort of hobbled by their medium, but you’re absolutely correct. If you don’t like it, don’t do it.

It is sort of skipping to the end when they data mine their answers… or at least enough to give it away. That’s really not any fun.
Scarlet has no worse depth than Batman’s Joker, or Catwoman, or Two-Face, and batman is a classic.

No they are not hobbled by their medium, a video game is an excellent medium with which to tell a story. We have all had at least one good story experience from playing video games so there’s no need to site examples of this. It’s just a bad story.
What story needs 3 consecutive failed alliances brought on by the same super villain? Anyone with half a brain would should see that after the first two failed that running with Scarlet is a bad idea. It’s like the plot and characters are not self aware … not Living in their World…

Anet has always sort of been hobbled by their medium, imo. They have good writers, and they have good stories, but sometimes they seem to lack the ability to effectively relay it through their chosen medium. That was my point. We saw it in GW1, we see it here. It’s gotten better, and continues to do so, I feel, but there is still lots of room for improvement. A little more meat to each story arc is something I’m sure everyone would appreciate, and might give us more insight as to what is happening. There is so much we simply don’t know, but this is also common with Anet’s stories.
What story you ask? Ever watched any of the Batman animated series? How about Spider man? Green lantern? The Avengers maybe? Justice league? Ooo, how about Gargoyles? Multiple baddies, many variations of the same type of alliances, all fall flat on their faces. Repeatedly. Its the same formula for every episode, but we loved watching it anyway.
I watched Batman the animated series when i was in middle school until the animation quality took a dive and Robin came in. As for the rest of those shows, nope didn’t watch.
So i get the picture that you expect the story arcs for GW2 to be on the same level as a Saturday morning cartoon, well that’s great you like it, but you honestly came to the wrong thread. This thread is questioning why there are 3 alliances
One well thought out alliance would have worked.
Two alliances is pushing it…
Three alliances is just overkill
Scarlet Briar seems obsessed with twisting pairs of things together. Her chosen name itself comes from her vision, where a red thorny vine twisted itself around the Pale Tree. If it’s a deliberate motif and not just lack of creativity, then we can hope that the creation of these new alliances will end with Scarlet’s story arc.

I expect a story that entertains me. That simple. Sometimes it can be light and predictable, like a Saturday morning cartoon. Sometimes it can be deep and emotional, or disturbing yet fun (hello Mad King Thorn!), and anywhere in between.
Some part of the living story have made me sad. Others have ticked me off. Some have made me laugh. Parts have made me sit back down, reread the lore, and ponder. That’s ‘good enough’ for me, I suppose.
I don’t know why people dislike Scarlet. She is a bit cartoony but I find her funny.

Basically it’s “just the same old thing once again”. The events/tasks are repetitive but at least we’ve got some new story tidbits. That changed. There’s something new happening – oh some surprise – aaaand it’s Scarlet! There’s a new alliance between Netherblades and Nightmare Court – oh, it’s Scarlet! Now something new and… yeah… always the same thing? If things are going to repeat themselves without significant changes there’s no need for a “living story”. They could just add one or two new random events every month and it might essentially be the same or even better. That’s the problem IMO.

Or, she unleashes a horror much much worse than an Elder Dragon while being mortally wounded. We snag her, drag her back to Lion’s Arch and beat the nectar out of her until she cracks.

shhhhhh the alliance of the alliances are currently forming… I guess there is only so much you can do with things like this but it would be nice to jump around a little.

I was thinking more sinister like a demon similar to the one in GW 1 (I forgot his name because I haven’t played the game). But, you can still opt for leaving her there to die/spiking her for the lulz.

You must not have read very much Batman. The three you mentioned have extensively fleshed-out backstories (though the Joker’s are not definitive); they all have great pathos, flaws, and personal conflict.
Most importantly, If they accomplish something, it’s often shown how they do it. Their method and capability is clear for all to see. With Scarlet, we are merely told that something incredible has been accomplished, and that it was that genius Scarlet again.
Those characters do not exist primarily in the cartoons y’know!

But Scarlet does have Flaws… she’s arrogant as kittening hell and doesn’t take things seriously, plus her fascination is probably going to be her downfall, she keeps mixing races that don’t normally want to work together work together, if you don’t think that’ll backfire you’re insane…
And you have to keep in mind they can’t realistically tell us how everything is accomplished by scarlet while in game because that’d either 1) have to introduce some sort of “god mode” device that trivializes her main strength (surprise) 2) we have to see it from her perspective, which just wouldn’t make ANY sense because we wouldn’t know anything and MMOs are about playing our characters (if they introduce a “Story Book” item that does this like in GW1 after her arc is done i would be ecstatic) 3) it’d be out of game (like most have been) which most people won’t see and a lot of the ones that do just whine about how it’s not in game.
Gotta keep in mind the Medium here, in comic books and TV shows you’re just watching scenes as they unfold as an omnipotent being, but in an MMO you are a character in the story, you are a piece of the puzzle, you shouldn’t know how she’s accomplishing everything unless she gave a monologue or it was OOC stuff.
As their mother, I have to grant them their wish. – Forever Fyonna
What’s next? The Hoof-hop Alliance? (Centaurs and Hylek)
You have my +1 because I thought the same thing. Its still worth the giggle.

Scarlet does have some back story, it was just presently poorly. Additionally her motives have been decently laid out, and really….taking over the world and rebuilding it in the villains image is a pretty common theme… I think there’s more to it, we don’t have all the details. Anet has been spinning out information on her slowly, a bit too slowly in my opinion, but I like some of the speculation too. The story isn’t over, we may yet see some of these behind the scenes things.
She also has character flaws, as someone else has taken the time to point out. She is not perfect. She is too smart for her own good though….
Also, I wasn’t referring to the comics. I was referring to the late 1980s, early 1990s movies and cartoon series (am I showing my age yet?). Comics where never my thing.
I certainly don’t expect depth of character from video game villains, not like I would from the villain in a novel or even a well-written comic. We’ve yet to see if the finale of the Scarlet arc will provide us with a revelation that is even a pale reflection of some of the villain schemes in well-written stories. I expect it won’t even be that good, but GW2 has, if anything, taught me to lower my expectations.
Maybe it’ll turn out to be a 3 way battle between us, the Krait & NC, and Scarlet?
It would still mean Scarlet gets involved, but she wouldn’t be the reason behind the Krait and Nightmare Court alliance.
indeed another alliance, so?
