Now that the patch notes confirmed there’s yet another alliance I think it’s appropriate for me to post this. Can we just stop with the alliances? Why can’t we focus on a single group of enemies instead of constantly merging two of them together and creating a “new” one, even more so groups that don’t even feel like they ever need to form an alliance with another faction. Krait want to flood Tyria and drown all land-dwellers, Nightmare court are land-dwellers, so I don’t get it at all.
It may be early to say this as the story can reveal as to why the xenophobic Krait decide to form an alliance, but seriously it’s getting old. Some players on the forums are already starting to call out that there’s once again an alliance coming and mocking its possible name.
I dislike the way alliances have been done so far simply because they reduce the two allied factions into their superificial elements (dredge have machines, Flame Legion have fire magic) and they haven’t respected the depth that the different factions have. If you are going to add something to the game and it’s going to deal with existing factions, it should expand those factions, respect the stories told already and bring them forward while using their existing characteristics to tell a story. It seemed like the Molten Alliance just ignored who the Flame Legion and the dredge were beyond their the surface, and that makes the story feel shallow.
Compare the Molten Alliance to the peace treaty between the humans and the charr. It’s not a fair comparison (the former are two enemy factions, the later are playable factions that have more weight in the world). The human/charr treaty has huge importance in the world. It’s history and current reality are woven into the world of Tyria today. All over Ascalon you see different characters and villages express different opinions about the treaty. In personal story it’s mentioned, in Ebonhawke it’s one of the most emotive stories in the game. The road to peace between humans are charr is not an easy one. The Molten Alliance doesn’t (and shouldn’t) compare to this, but it should be closer. There should be a story to these alliances instead of having them pop up when Scarlet needs something to do and players need something to fight.
I haven’t played the new content yet. Hopefully the Seaweed alliance is different.
Just wait, next living story is an alliance between the toxic, molten and aetherblades to form the Alliance of Doom, the toughest force yet (led by Scarlet and Lex Luthor).
Scarlet flat-out stated that she “loves odd combinations” during the Aetherpath of Twilight Arbor. Between that and the two alliances already in place… no. I don’t think they’re going to stop. I expect new alliances every few months until Scarlet is out of enemies to pair up. That seems to be her main “thing”.
Next one will be Sons of Svanir and Centaurs, perhaps.

Now that’s how it is supposed to be! Very fragile, and a lot of distrust of each faction. Though, I think Scarlett reminded them who’s in charge when Clockwork Nightmare came out and they became nameless shells full of items and XP.
Yeah and story wise the krait/nightmare court shouldn’t even get along, hence the krait should not get along with anyone. and the “toxic Alliance” is such a cringe worthy name

Well seeing as how we almost shattered the alliance in F&F, i’m pretty sure scarlet forced them back together, i doubt they’re wanting to keep the alliance going since both sides were up in arms vs the other at the end of F&F, constantly blaming one another.
Then again they may have also realized they caused a lot more good (for their race) while working with the other than when they were alone and being butchered endlessly and easily.

Well, the easiest way for Scarlett to stop the alliance from crumbling apart would be to kill the leadership and be like, ‘Yeah, see those guys? Do what I say, or you will end up like them.’…but they could have had that be explained outside of the game so the players have some sort of context of why the alliance is hanging in there.
I suppose that is also true, but being butchered endlessly really doesn’t matter if you have an alliance or not if you are still being butchered. I’m still thinking Scarlett had something to do with it.
Turns out Scarlet conveniently came into possession of a magic rock that the krait wanted. She offered it to them and the rock’s magic wiped away all of their prior characteristics so they could become tools for Scarlet.
The players need a magic rock to remove Scarlet from the story.
Next alliance will probably be Grawls and Inquest since Grawls are stupid but strong and Inquest is smart but lacks strengh, Sons of Svanir is impossible because they are the minions of the Elder Dragon Jormag, it would be much more stupid than this alliance with the Kraits and Nightmare Court.
Urgh… I have had enough of Scarlet and her alliances.
This is the last time, if we get more lazy writing and have a centar/whatever alliance next then I am out. I will just skip that living story and any others till Scarlet is dead.
Looks like the next two days I will be doing the achievements ASAP so I can ignore this alliance exists and go off play other parts of the game.

Because Anet writes their stories inside the train that leads them to their homeland, just like they did with the 3rd part of the personal storyline and Zhaitan Fight (or ZhaiKong, because he dies like him).

I hadn’t even thought to why I dislike these alliances but this is a really good reason. Instead of giving depth to races they are watering them down. Maybe the writers don’t know how to?

Turns out Scarlet conveniently came into possession of a magic rock that the krait wanted. She offered it to them and the rock’s magic wiped away all of their prior characteristics so they could become tools for Scarlet.
Because they apparently haven’t thought of taking the rocks, and then just wiping their “allies” out once they lost their usefulness. Yeah, someone’s going around brainwashing whole races.

I hadn’t even thought to why I dislike these alliances but this is a really good reason. Instead of giving depth to races they are watering them down. Maybe the writers don’t know how to?
I’ve been looking into this update a little bit and they seem to be doing an OK job with the krait. The story behind the obelisks and their prophets seems to be intact and interesting enough. The Nightmare Court truly do seem like space fillers though. This update probably would have been stronger without them from a lore perspective. The pollen is obviously their doing, but aside from that I haven’t seen too much depth to explain why they are involved.
I think there will be a second update to this one so hopefully the krait prophets and obelisk plot goes somewhere really cool and Scarlet doesn’t disrupt too much of it. They’ve definitely put in the effort to explore the krait a little bit more and that was a big concern of mine when it comes to Scarlet’s alliances, that they take away from the individual factions too much. At this point it depends on how they can grow that story.

We don’t know much about the Toxic Alliance yet though. Bloomanoo in Thunder Ridge Camp thinks that this is all Kraits doing and that they have enslaved (or hypnotized) portion of the Nightmare Court, because thats what they do.
Kraits might have seen potential in the skills of the Nightmare Court and they manipulated them.
So the alliance between Scarlet and the Krait is pretty much confirmed, but there is still a high possibility that the alliance between the Krait and Nightmare Court is not necessarily an alliance.
The next alliance will be between the ghosts of Ascalon and the quaggans who have as much of a presence in Ascalon as the Nightmare Court does in Kessex Hills.

So the alliance between Scarlet and the Krait is pretty much confirmed, but there is still a high possibility that the alliance between the Krait and Nightmare Court is not necessarily an alliance.
As much as I doubt it I really hope your right. This way it will hold partly true to the nature of the Krait. Normally they will kill on sight but perhaps the lure of obtaining the obelisks was too great and reluctantly forced them to use another race instead of instantly sacrificing them to their prophets.
Scarlet who doesn’t like the nightmare court could of convinced the Krait to enslave them, while tricking the Nightmare court into thinking it was an alliance.
But why use the Krait in the first place? why not build on what she has already got? Perhaps her chaotic nature is trying to disrupt all the races.
Then I hope Scarlet is not actually just a rebellious sylvari but instead an agent of Mordremoth. That way it could explain how she received such power and intelligence.
