I’m playing through the first solo story instance now and I just got to the part where Sergeant Walters starts to hallucinate a Centaur attack.

By sheer luck I happened to have turned my sound on just before the instance started and hadn’t disabled dialogue volume recently, normally both would be off. (It’s usually too loud in my house for me to hear the sound anyway so I just keep it off, and when I do have it on hearing the same comments over and over again from everyone’s character’s gets on my nerves.)

If that hadn’t happened I’d not have any clue what was going on during the cut scene because there were no subtitles and I find it hard to believe I might be the only person who could be in that position for one reason or another.

If subtitles were left out for aesthetic reasons, or any reason really, there should be an option added to turn them on or off, but leaving them out completely runs the risk of leaving any player who can’t hear the dialogue for whatever reason completely left out.

I also turn the RETREEEEEEEEAT dialogue volume FOR GREAT JUSTICE down sometimes because having SHAKE IT OFF these random catchphrases and ALL THINGS HAVE A RIGHT TO GROW npc’s yelling stuff at me all day is quite annoying.

When I noticed I couldn’t skip the new cut scenes I decided I may as well pay attention to it, but couldn’t hear it anyway. I went into options and turned the dialogue volume to full but it was still very quiet compared to the other game sounds. Subs would have been a good idea.

“meta” this, “meta” that. Please stop saying the word “meta”.

We agree! We do our best to make sure that any time we have a cinematic, they’re accompanied by subtitles. For this particular release, we ran into some technical problems which prevented us from importing text from one of our tools to another. We’ve already begun to outline a plan to resolve this for future releases. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Wow, thanks for the quick reply. I’m glad to know it’s a bug and not an intended part of the design (and therefore not a potential sign of things to come).

Hey I’m just glad that they’ve decided to do so many of these new cutscenes, even if they do take a bit more time.

Agreed.

I’m not sure if anyone else felt the same way but I suspect part of the reason the voice acting and dialogue in the main storyline wasn’t popular was the way the cut scenes were set up. It pulled you out of the action and presented you with essentially two actors reading lines to each other, out of context. Which then emphasised any time when it sounded like the actor didn’t know what they were saying, or wasn’t putting enough emphasis on it.

It also allows for much more effective story-telling. There’s a bit in one of the Pact stories where the cut scene style ruins a fairly important moment – one of your allies is trying to set off a bomb, keeps trying but it doesn’t work and then rushes off to do it manually. But all you see is them standing there calmly delivering their lines.

Even when it would make sense to do that (such as in the new solo instance when Kasmeer and Marjory are re-telling earlier events) it’s much more interesting and effective to see it happening.
