Is this Mesmer useless against Clockheart?
Yes, it is very useless
Am I to assume “adds” refers to either stacks or difficulty?
Adds refers to additional enemies. Your teammates were referring to the holographic pirates.
The Clockheart occasionally puts up an energy shield which makes it immune to damage. The only way to remove it is to make a holographic pirate explode near it. The explosion removes the shield.
What was probably happening was that your illusions were getting the attention of the holographs and your teammates were unable to get them near the boss.
There is nothing wrong with mesmers. We had one in our group and did fine. I suggest that you avoid using clones during the fight. If you are attentive and quick, you can probably use clones, just be sure that you blow them up when someone is trying to drag a holograph over.
Timewarp is really strong vs this boss. Mesmers are fine.
Focus pull is neat as well.

Guild Wars 2 will be an amazing game when it’s finished. Compare Prophecies to EotN!
Did the dungeon yesterday on my (Berserker build) Mesmer. Some parts can get hairy, but I haven’t had any problems at the last boss (usually using Mind Wrack and the other shatter abilities). Just don’t use any illusions while the shield is up.
Personally I used a greatsword, and I’d even suggest you do, too. The range is nice to get attention. Once the shield is down, spawn as many illusions as you want shatter them, etc. just make sure further (pirate) adds explode almost next to the boss and you won’t have any problems.
The scepter illusions should be perfectly fine as well, considering they’ll spawn right next to the boss. Just don’t do it while the shield is up, as the illusions will make it rather hard (or impossible) to properly pull the boss into the pirates.
If is about the adds: just controll the spawns of clones you create and shatter or kill (spawning other s in other place or target) the ones that atack the aetherblades (adds).
For the weapon you use the only form is either you atacked them or you have the dodge trait that generate clones (probably since you use scepter) that some times spawn them with a X target. In that case just change the trait.
If is about the mechanisms with blades that rotates (not adds actually lol), i believe they arent thrown if illusions are atacking from range, but when i did it i didnt use range phantoms or clone + dodge trait so i cant be sure because there wasnt many times when my clones were at that boss skill range (i have a good look of that boss lol toke some times because some of my guildies went to do other things and ended up 3man + figuring it out and some serius lag).
you are NOT useless…and neither are rangers….they are actually extemely useful in this fight….just make sure you are on holographic duty
when you see stacks starting to go up….go grab a holographic add and bring him to the boss and then position him with ease using ur greatsword “5” ability that knocks enemies back….or rangers longbow “3”(?) ability i believe which knocks the enemy back…and make sure the hologram goes literally ON TOP of the boss
then if your a mesmer, time warp the kitten out of the boss when his stacks are all the way down
your group will thank you in the end
try not to summon many illusions or phantasms as for this particular boss fight…it is less about damage, and more about making sure that shield stack hits 30
I dunno… I had some interesting fun with Feedback in there.
Just don’t use illusions when dragging the clones to the boss. If they are up, shatter them.
You should be fine.

This, this, this. Read this
We had a Mesmer in our group that wouldn’t shatter his illusions.
Mesmer main here.
GS skill #5, Focus skill #4 EXTREMLY useful in this fight.
Also, I was the last man standing when we downed it:)
You folks are awesome.
I can easily switch out weapons and losing a illusion with some micro management to Mind Wrack at the appropriate time.
I’ll have time to try this tonight.
Also, boss only throws gears at ranged targets. If your group is stacking on the boss to avoid gears in the field, be sure you don’t have a stray illusion out there on which the boss will drop a gear.

I found GS to actually be suprisingly useful for this fight. When he would charge up his power attack you can use the ranged attack to pull in a far away holo then when he is close enough use the #5 to knock him into the boss then finish it off with your berzerker phantasm.
I found that I was pretty much forced to use GS in this encounter as for some reason none of my clone summoning skills (I’m usually condi-staff) were working; even though I was in range of the boss about 90% of the time I wasn’t getting clones on dodge (yes, I’m traited) or staff #2 or Mirror Images, which was pretty frustrating for me as I tend to rely on having 3 clones up at all times to contribute to boons/conditions … I am utterly without Power. In many dungeons my build works extremely well, not in this one though … between the bugged clones in the Clockheart and the sheer amount of AE I think next time I’ll take in a different profession.

Had no problem on my mesmer. You need to stack on that fight so I took staff for buffs on the group but stayed in mostly sword/sword. Dodge and sword 2 are very helpful here. We did not mess with the adds to break the shield just let him get his attack up. I would then use decoy ( I am traited for pu) and then I would use my signent to share my defense buffs with the group. I used just about every weapon going through that dungeon though- as a mesmer I think you should have every weapon ready to go just in case.
