(Warning ahead of time, Sorry if its long winded and sounds like a temper tantrum but this is a serious complaint I have and I just cant keep it to myself.)

Please explain to me why the new mini’s are account bound? Why in the world would you do this? I am spending real money, to get minis I cant sell or trade. Not to mention if I get more than one of the same mini, wth am I supposed to do with it? This makes no logical sense. I can understand making the special mini (The Quaggan one) account bound because you have to trade three for it but once you have it, what do you do with the extra mini’s? I can’t sell them! Cant even give them away. I don’t need them for my other character’s.

Also, what if its nearing the end of the event and there is one or more minis I just cant seem to get. Am I supposed to spend my life savings and hope I dont get any more duplicates and just maybe be super lucky to get the ones I need? You wont allow me to buy the missing ones from TP. Is this your new marketing ploy. Making items impossible to get without spending real money or converting my in game money into gems.

I hardly ever have more than 5 gold at anyone time so I get to trade that in for what, 250 gems. I can only get two gifts with that and that is hours of hard work. I can’t earn it like others by doing dungeons and such because I have no friends who want to play the game and guild is hardly ever on. While that is unrelated and mostly my problem, it is just sickening to me that this is how you work with paying customer. I have spent so much real money on gems and it always worked out because I could sell the items I cant use or the mini’s already have. Now, you have taken that away. Its not worth spending my hard earned money for items I cant trade or sell. Its just sickening.

Lol, and on top of that you can’t by the minis explicitly like you could during Halloween.

@ArenaNet: You do realize that if I could just by a Winter’s Day Mini Pack with all 3 Minis, and transform them into the Baby Quaggan in the Mystic Forge, you would probably get me to by the Mini Pack Twice to get all 4 pets. This way, however, I won’t even bother. I will not gamble real money for ingame pets.

This.

As soon as I knew there would be minis in GW2 I decided I wanted to collect them, and that I was going to make a special effort for the limited time only ones. I bought 2 sets of Halloween minis with real money so I could get all 4. I bought gems and changed them into gold to spend on making consortium chests to get those minis and I’m saving to get the Reef Drake off the TP because I didn’t get one during the event.

But I cannot and will not pay out real money for a random chance like this. It’s far more likely that I’ll be stuck with an inventory full of account bound stuff I don’t even want and no way to even swap it for the items I did want.

It’s an especially bad move at a time of the year when many people cannot afford to spend much on themselves because buying gifts, food, travel etc. for Christmas is taking up their available income.

I, and many other people have said it before and will keep saying it again – selling account bound items for real money is fine. A random chance at items is fine as long as there’s some way to swap the ones you don’t want. But paying real money for a random chance at items with a high probability you’ll be stuck with ones you don’t want is asking too much for too little in return.

Yeah, there’s no way I’m going to spend money on a gamble that’s designed to make you buy “just one more” to potentially get what you want. I was thrilled to see that they got it right with the weapon skins this time around by letting us buy them directly, but it bums me out to see them pulling a 180 and trying this stunt with the minis. I have no problem with buying account bound content. Just make it so that we can purchase it directly.

I would gladly buy more stuff in the gem shop, but there is a right and a wrong way to go about selling it. Purposely barring access to buying something directly in hopes that you’ll get some poor souls to gamble over and over to get what they want is definitely the wrong way.

I have 2200 gems waiting for wintersday that I was going to buy outfits and minis with. But I can’t even be bothered to log in and spend them on the store after learning how the mini’s are done with these lottery boxes.

Mini’s should be like in Halloween, a box of 3 and you can get them with cold hard gems. This lotto box kitten is kittening kittening kittens with a puppy for good measure!

They knew everyone liked the minis at Halloween. So the next event instead of being able to purchase them, they stuck them in chests. Ok for those who like to gamble, annoying for those of us who don’t but hey, we could still purchase them off the trading post if we didn’t feel like throwing away real money on lottery boxes. So this time, they make them account bound like we are dumb enough to think “Man, I just have to have those minis and I can’t buy them directly and I can’t buy them off the trading post so please take this wad of cash so I can open boxes and hope I get one, I mean 6, because the drop rate of everything else in this game is so high, it’s sure to happen!”

No thanks. I won’t bother trying to get minis anymore. I actually probably won’t be purchasing anything from the trading post anymore. This left a really bad taste in my mouth.

I was expecting them to put minis in a silly lottery boxes but never occured to me that they would make them account bound. Even the most greedy mmos companies did not dare to think and implement this (account bound items in a lottery boxes, since lottery boxes are the trend nowadays in mmos). Hopefully its just a mistake. Thing is mods are not giving a clear answer to this silly mini account bound issue. Maybe its intended and they are just ignoring our complaints thinking that its going to go since its a temporary situation comes and goes with event.

This is the worst insult to your customers. It’s like you don’t care about the gamers. The way you set up these minis says it doesn’t matter if we are good gamers, or if we spend extra time farming. The only thing you care about is how rich your players are in the real world so they can spend money on gems. Have some respect for your players, Anet, and provide ways to get things for all, not just for those who have lots of money to spend on your gems.

I think the problem is that people are getting duplicates and the randomness by way of real currency should warrant their availability on the TP. As another poster stated, they should have let you just buy them outright like at halloween.

HoM mini’s took effort of the players in GW1 to earn for GW2, unlike the lotto box minis that only need you to have a bigger bank balance thank IQ.

Anyone who figures opening a potentially unlimited number of chests for a chance at getting the required set of 3 + 3 more for the special mini is ok is nuts.

Even if I did spend cash on the boxes, I could still technically spend £100 on trying to get the set of 3 + the special mini and only end up with 2 from the set, or even worse none due to bad roll of the RNG.

The entire thing stinks. Anet are showing their true colours as money-grabbing gold diggers who think their customers are nothing more than walking piggy-banks that they can dip into for a cash injection at leisure.

i suddenly dont want to part with any real money.
in fact, now that more minis are off the menu,

Catapult short bow skin.
Earmuffs.

which means i will spend a glorious total of 25 gems this event,
and i will use gold to buy those.

No skins from purchased chests either, BUT, I did get a random Giant gift drop from a spider that gave me a ticket to exchange for a weapon skin (account bound). THAT was pretty cool. I got the staff. It looks like a Scandinavian style wood carving with decorative scrolling on it that glows. I got another Giant gift from the Mysterious Gifts in the game world and that gave me a candy cane hammer..which was tradeable.

Please note that I am not complaining about not getting any minis. My friend just had better luck than me (she’s one of those folks that tend to be favorites of the RNG gods, so if she got even one; it’s no surprise she got multiples). I’m happy for her, and I’m still enjoying the other aspects of this event. I had a budget for how much I was willing to spend in the Gem store. It’s done now, and all I really want to know is if I’ll have a chance to get a mini during game-play. If I don’t, that’s really disappointing, and I hope they’ll decide to make the minis tradeable so i can still get one.

I bought some boxes before finding out the minis were account-bound. That’s pretty unexpected, and I hope it’s just an issue with the lotto boxes that ANet fixes.

I’m liking ANets events overall, but honestly the whole RNG approach is making me rethink gem purchases. I would happily buy 2 gem packs, or even 6 individual minis (350 gems * 6 = 1400 gems, that’s reasonable). But the RNG approach leaves a bad taste in my mouth, since it’s literally possible to spend $100s and get nothing.

Same thing as endless tonics from blc’s it seems. Seems like they can’t get normal players to buy anything so they are trying to bleed us collectors out of everything we’ve got with this account bound rng crap.

Seriously, do you know how many blcs I’ve opened over the course of this game? Over 400. And I have ONE endless mystery tonic to show for it. To collect them all they must expect me to open almost 2000 chests (since no doubt even if I get 3 some will be duplicates). At least I didn’t spend real money on the sham. I’m starting to sound like a broken record I’ve posted so much about this, but it really is ruining my enjoyment of the game. I just want to get them and move on to other goals, but it seems that will never happen.

Well, I can see that nobody from Anet is going to take the time to comment on this. I’m sure they are working on more important things…

(On to the complaining)
I finally decided to get some gems to get some of the wintersday items like the costumes. I had a bunch left over so I also grabbed the gifts to see if I might be lucky enough to get them all or more to exchange for the special one. I got a batch of 10 for 800 gems. Sure enough the fear and complaints I had came real. The first 4 gifts, in a row(I swear) gave me the “Mini Festive Golem”….4 in a row… the same minipet. While the first few second were filled with laughter, then turned to rage, I ended at realizing that this is ok, I can keep one for the collection and the other three can be turned into “Foostivoo the Merry”. I did this so yaaa I have two of the four that can be found in the gifts.

I had enough gems left over to get one more set of 10 so I figured what the heck. Out of those I got another “Mini Festive Golem”, and 2 “Mini Snowmen” and thats it. So to keep tally, I was surprised to get any all but all together I got 5 “Mini Festive Golem’s” and 2 “Mini Snowmen”. I am now stuck with two extra minis that do me absolutely no good other then being stack-able in the Mini collection…

Now here is where the genius marketing ploy comes in. If I want to get the “Mini Infinirarium”, I would have to buy even more and hope, or dare I say pray that I get it. I have a feeling it has a more rare of a drop rate than the others so my chances of getting more doubles is high. Don’t get me wrong, I am happy to at least get the ones I have but if I want to complete the collection, I am forced to spend even more money to maybe get the last one plus the useless duplicates I’ll more than likely get. GENIUS!

On a side note, to add to the genius marketing ploy, lets give away two of the special toy minis to be nice. Oh but wait, now that I have the two, I’ll have to complete the set so I’ll spend another $20 to get the gems and buy the other three. Sure I did not have to buy the first two and I would have to get all 5 but now I feel like I need to buy the other three so I can make the collection complete. A supposed good gestured that somehow feels just as screwed up. GENIUS!

I am sorry but I see mini-pets just like trading cards. They are intended to be traded with others so they too can enjoy the ones they don’t have or the ones they really want. By forcing us to spend real money for mini-pets that are randomly rewarded and can’t be traded just defeats their entire purpose in my eyes. Thank you.

I’ve to agree with this.
Minis shouldn’t be account bound because they are collectables.

Have people seen collectables in real life where it’s bound to you?
In reality, collectables can be traded, sold, bought and even sent for auction.

The reason why reality trading card games were popular is because it’s collectable. Those are collectable items where you can keep and hunt for whole set, sell or trade away.

Minis act like trophies these days. This is why I don’t go for minis as a collector. There is no point of collecting minis that acts like a trophy.

Trophies: Meant to be acquired through achievements (like dungeon armors), not bought. These are okay to be account bound.

Collectable items: Meant to increase value through time. When you hold a rare minis, you feel great because it’s worth something. You don’t plan to sell it, but you feel great because it’s worth 100g+ in the TP.

The designers must really do lots of research in the human nature and behaviours.
There must be realism in mmorpg to sell virtual products.

The reason why me and most collectors doesn’t go around collecting minis are for the same reason. There’s no prestige in collecting minis.

Got to agree on the notion of the Mini Pets (and other RNG box items for that matter) needing to be possible to trade. Out of €50 I got 2 Mini Festive Golem, 5 Mini Snowman (3 went to make Festivoo the Merry), 2 Mini Infirarium and 2 Festive Hats (I do not need/want more than one, quite honestly)—besides the other “junk” items. I am actually “stuck” with a duplicate of every Miniature, and I got friends that are missing just 1 to complete their collections. I’d like to give mine to them.

Don’t get me wrong, I am happy that I at least didn’t end up with a broken collection, and that it only cost me €50 (which is still a terribly high cost for 4 Mini Pets), compared to others I know who’s spent over €80+ and not gotten complete collections. Even so, it still stings that I needed to pay €50 (50 Wintersday Mystery Boxes opened before the collection was completed) in order for that collection to happen. The Halloween approach was FAR better, a set I can buy twice to make a fourth.

As I’ve said in one or two other posts; I will not jump into another RNG gamble like this, if this is how it’s intended to be forwards. And, as soon as my collection is broken, and I have no way of obtaining these collectibles through, e.g., Trading Post, I will just stop collecting. Who wants a broken collection? Thus, any funds coming from me for future collectibles updates are not going to be happening. Consider that this may be the case for many collectors. Making them Account Bound may just be like shooting yourself in the foot on purpose, stupid.

Guild Wars 2 is not the typical Free-to-Play model, we already pay upfront for our copy of the game, and as such we have already invested and are less likely to jump in and out. You’d think you would want to keep your already playing players investing, through clear purchases, and not drive them away. If the game was completely free to download and play, then yes, I can see that tactic being possibly beneficial to the company; but as it stands however, this game is not a game that I would expect to see having a influx of players jumping in and out of it, like other F2P titles that relies on these tactics to “milk” players as they jump from game to game.

If I want to act like a “financial elite wannabe” I will do so in real life, not in a MMO. There are much better and more efficient ways to do that outside of Guild Wars 2.

If I want to make money in GW2 I will play the game and sell the good stuff on AH so others can get thier hands on it. That way others benefit and so do I. Mini’s are fluff and I treat them as such. That doesn’t mean I should be able to make a profit on them. I treat them as additional rewards for playing GW2, that is all.

I have no argument or objection to the Mini’s being account bound. None whatsoever. Wintersday is supposed to be for fun, like this MMO.

This video game is an escape for a lot of people, some people seek fulfillment that they cannot currently attain in their day to day life. I’ll admit that’s me. I think that these mini-pets being account bound is an issue. It’s Christmas is it really appropriate to charge me 2$ or 2 gold for each what appears to be gifts? Although the majority of the issue I have lies in the way we attain the mini-pets the blow would be so much softer if the return wasn’t so low, if I sell everything I get in a box that isn’t a mini-pet, I’ve converted 2 gold or 2$ into less than a silver. You might not have an issue with this but anyone who is like minded to me will. If it doesn’t bother you then don’t worry about it.

Personally, I’m extremely disappointed in ANet over this. Just a baffling decision on their part and it’s really quite insulting to their playerbase and their long time fans.

What are they thinking?

If I could buy each mini pet individually and directly on the gem store, I would buy them all without hesitation. The mere fact that it is impossible for me to get every mini pet available for Wintersday (as I refuse to RNG), means I will not be buying any at all.

Is it just me who thinks Anet have missed a trick here?

I’m slightly OCD so now that I have two of the pets it’s all or nothing which is unfortunate.

I would actually be fine with these only coming from an RNG box if they weren’t account bound.

I have some money I was planning to spend on buying boxes, but it’s not infinate and the risk of ending up with useless duplicates and no way to even exchange them makes it not worth my while.

really the thought I have is this, this is only the second Holiday event, and the third major event, they have had since coming online. I say show some patience while they test what works and doesn’t work. They can change things with patches, so they could un-account bound them.

Also the way some people post on the forums, they seem to be looking for an excuse to complain rather than a reason.

Really show some patience while they work things out and test new ideas, because it could be a lot worse, since i know of an mmo that most new content, gear, characters, is realeased by accountbound lotteries with real money, and no real way to convert currency.

This is how I see it….

This is a MMO, this is not real life. We come here to escape Real Life. I will not worry about how much money I make ingame or how much I financially “compete” with other Players.

I think you are missing the point. Just the fact that you CAN spend real money and get something that is completely useless to you (ie. a duplicate account bound mini-pet) is bad business. The only thing to do is to delete it.

It’s not about being financially competitive with gold nor is it about the completionists who want every pet. It’s not about whether minis are fluff or a differently designated content. It’s not even about allowing profitable trade as the concept of making a profit off of these things is somewhat ludicrous when people are dumping $50 and getting a single mini-pet.

Wintersday is fun and so is this MMO but there is really zero reason to account bind the mini-pets. That doesn’t make it more fun for anyone. Not me (who doesn’t even want a mini-pet), not you (who would or would not trade mini-pets), and certainly not those who want to collect them.

Is there anyone in this game who has more fun because they are account binding holiday mini-pets? Do tell me who they are.

My thought is that without feedback it’s very difficult for them to know what works and what doesn’t. And how annoyed people are is just as important as the fact that they are annoyed.

I’m sure some people are exaggerating, but I’m equally sure Anet has experience with the internet and will allow for that.

One thought I have about this mini pet binding (this is not a rant, just an idea) would be to update the game with a patch that can make our Hall of Monuments restored by golems or something (maybe even pay a fee to have it “fixed”). It could hold titles we earned in GW1 as banners and even have the dedication system (with title tiers) for minis. This way the people who make the excess duplicates can sell them for some coin and reinvest in mats to keep trying for the desired results.

The gem store is not a bad idea, I just think Anet may be stepping over dollars to pick up nickels in this case. there will be plenty of gems bought to get those rare minis from those who want them. I think Anet may even see bigger profits from a system like that.

My personal observation is that I see less people than started playing on launch and even beta. That is quite normal for any online game I have played. Like Kazumas I am patiently waiting to see some changes to the system. No rage quitting from me but I do think the current system needs work.

Gamespot named GW2 game of the year so Anet is doing more right than wrong I think.

USE THE EXTRA MINIS IN THE FORGE TO GET OTHER RARE MINIS
EXAMPLE:
SNOWMAN+SNOWMAN+SNOWMAN+SNOWMAN = POLAR BEAR/IMP/ ANOTHER MINI

That’s useless and doesn’t answer anyone’s question or solve any of our issues.
