Get it taken down -
Do whatever it takes if you care about this game -
With the past 2 events roughly being failures in someway, I’m not holding out hope this event will be any different – Breaking down each individual component down ~
“With festive town clothes, wintery weapon skins, and chests full of holiday treasures, The Black Lion Trading Company has everything you need to celebrate Wintersday! Check out the new items and much more in the Gem Store!”
This reads to me ~ Gambling Boxes ~ This caused more than a few people to rage during Halloween, sure it might drum up some extra revenue but the more people burned, the more people quit. I’m willing to bet the numbers for the lost shores gambling boxes was pretty low. Not to mention the effect of raising the gold to gem costs up again, this upsets the general economy because of players bot farming to get gold, and as you know~~~ players farming gold is apparently a bad thing.
“It’ll take more than a good pair of snow boots to get you through this Wintersday’s jumping puzzle. Speak to the Festive Youth near the snow globe in Lion’s Arch to test your luck—and your balance.”
‘Test your luck?’ in a jumping puzzle?, that doesn’t bode well at all. The Halloween JP caused enough grief, where as the Lost Shores JP was fairly well balanced. Hoping this JP isn’t a frustration fest ~ remember, Wintersday supposed to be a fun time not a time for raging.
Snowball and Choir ~ These could be interesting, I’m guessing the snowball fights will have something to do with the Monthly. Lets hope its not a grindfest such as hit 1000s of players to complete it.
As for the dungeon, that remains to be seen. Lets hope its worth the time for players, after all ~ most will be either fotm or forever farming.
I think the wintersday is going to be awesome. The first day of the karka event i was little sad because of the lag , because of it i was unable to land a single punch to any of the creatures. BUT the next day the people in the a-net fixed it and it worked just fine. I don’t know on what server are you but on mine i have only good words for the events.
I dont think youre cynical. I think you’re exactly right.
There will be some form of gambling boxes for this event. There is no reason not to. They are a proven money maker in every cash shop that has them. Besides… placing any item that sells a lot on the market is going to affect gem/gold ratios… that’s not a side effect unique to gambling boxes.
I have a wait and see attitude for the jumping puzzle. Anet makes many big, amateurish mistakes with their game, but they seem to learn/fix them quick enough. We’ll see if they improved since Halloween.
Umm with the way that it says “With festive town clothes, wintery weapon skins, and chests full of holiday treasures” makes it sound like you can just buy the weapon skins from the gem store and that the boxes will be filled with other holiday treats. So I dont see whats wrong there. As for the other events I think Halloween went just fine. All that was complained about really was the Chests and the Clock Tower, although people only complained about the Clock Tower because they refused to try and want things to be easy so they can ruin events for the rest of us who enjoy some challenge. But then again people are always like that, trying to ruin challenges and make them easier. I don’t think your right one bit. Just look at other MMO’s and their events? For Halloween all WoW does it throw some pumpkins around, maybe a headless man and call it good. Halloween on GW2 completely changed the environment not only that but added fun new Halloween related PvP games that I have never seen other games do.
tldr; Things shouldn’t be handed to you, I believe you are wrong on your assumption, but that is my opinion and I am entitled to one just like you. I hope the jumping puzzle is challenging and hard. o3o

The Lost Shore JP was done very well, once you had it figured out it was pretty fun to do. The clocktower wasn’t at all, that stank of elitism and that was reflected by the multitude of posts afterwards. JP should be challenging, I agree but not requiring luck, or pushing through frustration.
Overall, I’m just hoping for a nice Wintersday event free of grief and frustration, the game and players need it.
I spent endless hours on the Clock Tower, to never make it past the “leap of faith”. The Southsun Cove was hard (2-3 hours), but doable. I hope to see the next JP at the Southsun Cove level of difficulty.
I’d also like some sort of “environment” effect that made everybody the same size. Asurans being totally “engulfed” by Norns and Charr, does present some practical jumping difficulty.
I am choosing to be hopeful, especially since it sounds like Anet learned from their mistakes with limited time events and all content will be available to play at will from Dec 20-Jan3. That’s two weeks to play through all the events if you missed them at their release. Given that, I am hoping that Anet also learned their lesson with BLCs… but time will tell.
JP should be challenging, I agree but not requiring luck, or pushing through frustration.
I can’t see how you can have a challenge without frustration…. I am honestly curious how you think this is possible.
I don’t think the Halloween event was a failure. Lost Shores though.. yeah that was.
They’re going to add items to Black Lion Trading Post with each event. It’s how they make money. Just dealwithit.jpg.
“Test your luck” may just be a general term like “break a leg”. I’ve completed every single jumping puzzle and none of them were luck based. I don’t see any indication as to why this one would be.
Just unrustle your jimmies and give this event a shot. You can tell ArenaNet is learning from previous events. A prime example is that not only do the city events last for 24 hours, but they’re completable when Tixx gets to Lion’s Arch as well. This shows that they learned from Lost Shores and that people don’t like one time events that require you to log on at a certain time on a certain day.

So.. Because you didn’t like a part of a past event or you weren’t handed phat l00tz, suddenly all future events will suck?
So.. Because you didn’t like a part of a past event or you weren’t handed phat l00tz, suddenly all future events will suck?Come on dude, your post basically consists of uninformed jabs against an event that hasn’t even happened yet. I see your name everywhere on these forums always complaining about something. Maybe it’s your mindset that has to change, not the game. Either that or just stop playing if It’s hurting you this bad.
I have been cynical about Guild Wars cash shop / gem shop stuff ever since they started selling costumes in the Guild Wars 1 shop, because that was quite clearly the point where the free cosmetic headgear that accompanied all of the annual events started getting crappy. Unsurprisingly, I saw something similar in this game, with a boring witch hat and the devil horns that hardly anyone seems to like being the free things that everyone got.
My main issue is with the random chests. I don’t like that nonsense at all. Just let me buy something directly from the gem shop and be done with it. The main saving grace of the chests is that the items can be traded on the trading post, but of course someone else has to open them. If this stuff is what I have to put up with to have full access to a MMO’s gameplay content with no sub fee and no other weird strings attached, though, then so be it, but it doesn’t mean I have to like it.

I really liked the Halloween clocktower and I hope the Wintersday JP is a just as hard. The clocktower took a big effort to learn, but it was very satisfying to complete. Personally I found the Southsun Cove JP easier, but more frustrating. I’m not sure why exactly, but the point is people will respond to content differently.
I don’t like these arguments that because you personally didn’t enjoy the clocktower, no other JPs like that should ever be put in the game. A lot of people really liked it.
Ummmm Halloween was awesome. Chests are and will always be gambling no matter what holiday skin the devs slap on it, though for some reason players thought the Mad King chests would be overflowing with loot, the crap rates of Black Lion chests should’ve tipped them off. Other than that Lunatic Court was pretty cool, the scavenger hunt and halloween gates was decent, Mad King’s Maze and Descent into Madness were fantastic. Clock Tower not my thing but I can appreciate it for the JP enthusiasts. And all this kitten in a free update.
Karka event was pretty much fail though. Bits and pieces of it did work, but as a whole, in terms of fun and stuff to do, Mad King was worlds away and better. So I can’t even perceive how you’re lumping them together. So to answer your question, I’d say you’re about 50% cynical.
I’m going to agree with everyone but the OP, Halloween was awesome, far from a “complete failure” and I have high hopes for Wintersday. I’m just a little let down that they told us that the toypocalypse is going to happen, and that there’s no sign of Dwayna vs Grenth.
Stopped reading @ ‘failiures’. Could not disagree with that statement more. I don’t even see what you could possibly have against the Halloween event. Lost shores, technical issues aside (which they made up for) was very fun/interesting.
This is just the sad reality of it all. The better something actually is, the higher peoples expectations will go.
Am I the only one then who clearly remembers all the posts and fallout from the Halloween event? All the QQ posts about the jumping puzzle? About how many people spent $$ or even $$$ on keys trying to get the skins? Or about about the millions of people affected by Hurricane Sandy and couldn’t even partake in most of the activities?
So call me Cynical, I prefer to deal with realism here – both events wasn’t done flawlessly, both events had significant problems. For an event to go off smoothly and enjoyable, everyone from a casual to a hardcore player needs to enjoy them and, most important of all, be able to complete them. It has been posted many many times since launch that catering to just one type of player isn’t healthy for the game, and lately it seems the hardcore fanbase has gotten most of that attention.
But again, time will tell ~ Let us see what happens over the next few weeks and decide for ourselves? Win or Fail? Lets just pray Pre-Cursors are not given out to random people this time around..
(The problem is, that somewhere in gaming history PvE became extremely competitive and in that is one of the problems, I think maybe WoW is to blame for alot of that tbh.)

Are you sure we’re playing the same game? Were the events buggy? Yes, they were buggy. However I found them to be quite enjoyable and well worth the time and effort. I don’t see how Winter’s Day will be any different.
Uhh obviously you didn’t see the reddit for gw2 on Halloween. People praised the event and thought the Jp was great! The only reason why you saw complaining threads was because the gw2 forums are where people come and whine to get their way. I’m not saying they were done flawlessly because nothing is flawless, your not a realist if you believe something can be flawless. The Jp wasn’t required but people like free handouts so they complain, huh if you want guild wars to be like the welfare line then that’s our own opinion. But don’t call ourself a realist if you want events to be without their flaws.
Halloween: A finders quest that was horribly designed and implemented. Followed by the jumping puzzle.
Lost Shores: Massive lag. Invisible (culled) mobs. Every quest bugged. Then fixed only to have more bugs appear. (Though I did like the final day event.) To this day, hearing the Sylvari in LA asking us to ‘please donate’ irritates me because it just reminds me of how bad the two events were.
I had pretty massive goodwill towards Anet prior to Halloween. And there’s still so much to love (e.g. the central garden is DR is just gorgeous and the environment is so rich). But events should be awesome; they should showcase whats really great about the game. Instead, they’ve been horribly broken. (Invisible enemies?? Every quest bugged?? What the heck??) So I’ve lost a lot of that good will.
Goodwill: Three years ago I got a Christmas card from Anet. I had only played Gw1 for a month or two about 8 months before then. I liked Gw1 but found it too limited — but I thought the card was awesome, and I went back and played Gw1 once in a while and often bought the outfits even though I wasn’t playing much since I wanted to send some money their way and encourage them to keep going towards Gw2.
I’ve loved Gw2 in many ways. But the events… Just bad. They’ve pretty much burned through the good will that that Christmas card from three years ago generated.
Now, I hope that Wintersday will be good, but like the OP, I’m not expecting it at this point. And that’s unfortunate.
PS: Stuff that I really hope not to see at Wintersday:
RNG boxes
I don’t like it. I think non RNG item sales would be better. But other than that I don’t care, I will simply not buy those. Certainly not worthy of raging upon as they can simply be totally ignored.
Jumping puzzle
To me Clock Tower and Lost Shores Jp were one of the best part of the events. Clock tower was not perfect (other players blocking the view, annoying waiting time) but once I finnaly finished it, I could repeat it over and over without getting bored of it, and for this reason it is one of the best imho.
Not failures
So clearly I would not call previous events failures. Especially not Halloween, which was not perfect but very much enjoyable. Lost Shore was much shorter… and hundred time more laggy and buggy, which is my real concern regarding the event.
But Anet is learning from their mistake. No laggfest “one time” event for Wintersday (so no whining “I was cleaning my mother basement”, and Australia will be happy ), every one can re do previous events, and claim the final reward in a 2 week time frame (so no whining “I didn’t got my reward”). Information given ahead of time (so no whining “where do I go I need someone to held my hand”)
Really I am quite optimistic about it. If they tune down the RNG a bit and for once manage to pull of events that are not bugged it would be perfect

If people want a holiday event not te be about raging, then just don’t rage… There, it’s really that simple. Raging over a gambling box you bought yourself is stupid, just don’t buy the damn thing if you aren’t looking for tough odds.
The JP in Halloween was fine, way better than the Lost Shores one actually, because that one was too easy. If you aren’t good at JP’s and will rage when you can’t make it through, just don’t do it. Or try it and if you feel a rage coming, stop doing it. They didn’t tie anything other than the Mad King’s Boots to the JP specifically so that people could always decide not to do it, without missing out on overall event completion.
To sum it up: raging has to do with you. You control it, not Anet so don’t blame them for people’s lack of self-control.
The last two events/updates were kitten in a variety of ways that people have already listed so I’m not going to get my hopes up about this one.
The only thing they’ve appeared to do right based on the information given is that they’re giving a wide timeframe to complete the events.
Or about about the millions of people affected by Hurricane Sandy and couldn’t even partake in most of the activities?
What is this I don’t even -
Are you seriously pronouncing the Mad King event a failure because of Hurricane Sandy????
There are things i think could have been done better in the game and I have my wishes and expectations that might or might not be met. Discussing those is good and helps Anet better the game if they can and listen, but i don’t understand the anger, negativity and emotions that seem to flare with it occasionally in some (pointing at no one in particular) players. Especially when the event isn’t even live yet.
My view on things (feel free to disagree) is that already I got a huge amount of hours of fun for just 60 euro (that’s about 5 movies and GW2 sure entertained me for longer already, and I am not even nearly done with it). So maybe it makes a big difference that I think I already got great value for money.
Of course I like if I get even more. And I do in the form of free extra content to entertain me with the festivals and such. So maybe that’s why I am pretty easily content with the festivals even with their flaws and issues.
I likely won’t like everything of the Wintersday stuff. But even if I only like a few things, that’s still free fun. It’s all optional anyway. But yeah I do hope they deliver something I will enjoy, in whatever shape of form. If they do I will feel that for me personally it is a success. And I of course hope it will be a big one
And going by what I heard so far I am looking forward to it and having good hopes I will have fun with it.
