Giftbox RNG
I’m a bit surprised no one mentions that you are nearly guaranteed a mini if you participate in the dungeon a couple times… Not to mention it looks like you can then buy the mini for gems too (at least the ventari)
I understand that the rare ones from the box are awesome, but I found the drop rate rather high (even for RNG). Part of me can’t believe the people saying they opened over 30 and didn’t get one (by 30, I already had multiples of all of them except the lightbulb golem, and I’m normally not that lucky)… But that’s the RNG…
Unfortunately what can you do if you want to keep an item with any resemblance to a rarer item…? You can’t win… And apparently even if you put them in as extra treats (again, there are several non-RNG minis)… Still can’t win.
Just curious – can you use 3 of the toy makers minis to make the quaggan?
Combine any three Wintersday miniatures (Mini Festive Golem, Mini Snowman, or Mini Infinirarium), and 50 Wads of Enchanted Stuffing in the Mystic Forge.

And whats with the outrage?
I bought 4 boxes and i got a Snowman and a Infinirarium.
Seems fine to me.

I have multiples of the Gift Box Minis, which is pointless because they are account bound. There should be a feature that tells the game what you already have so you don’t end up with duplicates, or they should unbound them so they can be sold or traded for the ones you don’t have.
Yeah, if they were tradeable I would be much more OK with it. There’s an RNG way and a chance to earn, fair enough. Just RNG is not cool though.
don’t gamble if you don’t know the probabilities or you’re not satisfied with them.
Add to that, there is no published probabilities. Now put 2 n 2 together.

It really feels like Anet will take whatever their MOST popular item will be and then turn it into a horrible cash-grab RNG chest.
IE: The Scythe was by far the coolest skin (and we all know they knew it) and thus made it RNG only.
Wintersday they made the lovable zomg quaggan RNG.
I have a feeling this pattern is going to repeat.
I’m not buying gems during any holiday event again until they stop doing this nonsense. Everything should have a price that I can get directly from the gem store. Offer CHEAPER random chests, and more expensive for-sure gem buys. Everybody wins. Make a stack of RNG chests of 5 or 10 the same as 1 direct purchase of something. I think that would be fair. They need to stop RNG’ing the most popular item. It feels really underhanded.
I got 1 gift with gems I already had (because I don’t spend real money in world. At all.), and I got a mini. shrug
I’m a bit surprised no one mentions that you are nearly guaranteed a mini if you participate in the dungeon a couple times… Not to mention it looks like you can then buy the mini for gems too (at least the ventari)
Except that we can only make 2 of the 5 dungeon minis (according to the dev post). Granted he said you can only make 2 if you do all 5 days, which still gives the possibility that we can somehow get more cogs after, I highly doubt it. Which means we need to spend 1050gems to get all.
Please give us a keyring…
BUT the rarity, cost and account bound are not!
I hate comparing this to it’s predecessor, but GW1 did this way better.
Mini’s in RNG had a 0.05 percent chance (IIRC), but you were able to farm a few stacks of gifts in a day. The RNG was was never the problem when there are plenty of presents. If arenanet wants to keep them in an RNG then please increase the drops and make them trade-able.
I talked to a guy that had gotten the quaggen, and he didn’t even want it. UGH. So unfortunate he can’t sell it to someone that does and has been trying very hard to get one.
Added suggestion: Make them drop as loot and increase the odds from foes that have been alive longer (encouraging players to off the beaten path).
Second edit: other than the minis, I LOVE Wintersday! So many improvements, you guys really do listen to us, thanks Anet

First, I will state why it is in ArenaNET’s best interest to fix this mini debacle:
Anyone who has the COMPLETE collection of Minis has at least 27 Hall of Monuments points from Guild Wars 1. Therefore, ArenaNET is kicking sand in the face of their long time customers, who spent the LONG hours in the original game to get these points.
Then again, I suppose that’s why we get the screw, because ArenaNET knows that we have invested so much time in the game that we will overlook this dishonourable cash grab.
If you need more money, stop dropping the price on the Deluxe Edition to remind me that I paid too much for the NINE copies I’ve bought for me, my son and friends. Well, at least I know where I will save up the money to get the new minis —> no GW2 presents for friends this year!
I’m a bit surprised no one mentions that you are nearly guaranteed a mini if you participate in the dungeon a couple times…
This is not a question about getting “A” mini, it’s one about getting ALL of the minis. Why? Some people want the whole set. I happen to be one of those.
Right now, ArenaNET is threatening to break my complete collection if I don’t spend money on lottery tickets, which is exactly what they are. Even worse, these tickets don’t even have a million dollar grand prize.
RNG+Account Bound => SCAM.
Pick one or the other, I’ll be happy to buy the Minis in game that I need, or buy them with gems in the store like the 3 of the 5 I won’t get through the events.
It’s only the 4 RNG minis that are a problem, and that problem is MASSIVE, as people like me who have expended countless gold and hours to get a complete set are up against the wall, forced to buy lottery tickets to keep our collections complete.
For those of you thinking, “I don’t know why anyone would waste their time on Minis,” what do you think about..
Stamp collectors, coin collectors, Star Wars toy collectors, etc.
One more reason to change this.. how many players in this game are under 18? Aren’t there laws against selling lottery tickets to minors?

Is this the end of the complete collection?…
I definitely hate the packs (calling them packs cause they’re essentially the same as Perfect World International’s infamous RNG packs for good items). RNG is a terrible way to go about collectibles such as minis. I opened 20 and got crap, a friend opened 20 and got his minis and made a quaggan. Not going to bother spending gems on special event things again if it’s only gonna be RNG.

I bought roughly 40 boxes just because I wanted the quaggan. I received around 9 minis which you can toss 3 in the forge with some wadding and receive the rarer ones. Myself and another guildy got our quaggans on the first attempt.

I totally agree with Allisa.
I’m also trying to get a complete collection but I’ll never buy them if it’s based on luck. If you want to go for NRG minis, at least make them tradable… I bought Halloween’s minis with gems, I bought Cursed Shore’s minis with gold, I’m ready to spend a fixed amount of gems to get minis not a random one… And if I can’t get all the Wintersday’s minis, I’m done with special event’s minis since I won’t be able to get a complete collection anyway… And I’m pretty sure I’m not the only one feeling that way…
You became way too greedy this time Anet… Trying to get all collectors to buy dozens and dozens of chest, you’ll end up losing a lot of them since they won’t be able to get all the Wintersday’s mini.
Seems like your strategy backfired…

Word.
I spent $30 on these filthy things and received no minis whatsoever. In return for my $30, I got 5 silver worth of junk.
Seems like a great ripoff scheme anet has going here.
I will no longer support this company with my money unless I see a remarked change in the way they treat collectors. Quite simply, KEEP RNG OUT OF THE GEM STORE.
Give us a way to craft the chests, you did that for both Halloween and The Lost Shores event, why can we not craft these chests now?
I am a longtime GW player and a longtime minipet collector. I have so many GW1 pets that they don’t all fit into my HoM!
I bought two packs of the GW2 Halloween minis so that I could have them all. I would really like the Wintersday ones, but with the possibility of it costing $30-$60 just for the chance to score them, it just doesn’t seem worth it.
I would gladly pay for a guaranteed pack of them, like the Halloween event! When spending real money, I would like to know exactly what I am buying.
Please fix the minipets you broke. You, ArenaNet, broke every chance of ever collecting these seasonal minipets without spending a heap of money on RNG chests. Set it right. Lose the RNG. Release in packs if you really have to release things like minipets through the gemstore. Your model for the gemstore is horrible as it is now.
It’s not like the boxes from the past two events had better odds and suddenly these ones suck. Gambling will always favor the house!
Stop buying the RNG boxes, and maybe Anet will make them better. As long as people keep dumping boatloads of RL money on them, Anet will keep pumping them out.

I’d just like to join the choir and say that random drops from gem store items are bullkitten. This is the second time I’ve ever posted on the forums and I absolutely don’t mean to whine, but I think this is important. It’s bad, bad, bad.
Just like my previous (and before this, only) complaint about the Fractals gear grind, I’m posting this one because the gambling goes against everything ArenaNet has been saying. You don’t get random drops from dungeons, you get currency with which you buy dungeon rewards. Because that makes sense, right? So how does this not translate to gem store? Actually, how does this not translate to gifts as well? I wouldn’t be posting this just to complain about the unbreakable choir bell, but in principle it’s the same thing.
Stop the gambling. It’s ridiculous. I do not want to play a gambling game. If I did, I’d go to a casino. I have moral issues for associating myself with a gambling institution. Don’t make me a gambling enabler just for playing this game.
I have been kicking myself for missing out on buying the Halloween mini pack, because I thought it would be cool to occasionally buy a thing or two to commemorate the events… and then came Lost Shores and minis were random. But they are also monster drops, apparently, so that made it somewhat acceptable. And now comes Wintersday where minis are just simply gambling. That is bullkitten. And I know you know it’s bullkitten.
So how about you fine ArenaNet folk stop trying to turn me away from this game, eh? I quite like it, even though it falls short in certain respects. I expect it to evolve, not devolve.
I actually lucked out on this one. Got 4xMini Infinirarium from one batch of 10 presents. Got my baby Quaggan mini <3
Posting here just to say I’m incredibly disappointed in this method, I won’t be buying anything else from the gem store. Absolutely ripped off with the crates i did buy, Not a single mini.
Speaking of presents, there are twenty piles of presents meant for six year olds in Newtown, Ct. that will never be opened. Maybe “outraged” isn’t the right word to use in the context here… it’s far more fitting in the real world right now. Perspective, please.
That being said, I’m not an avid collector which is probably why this doesn’t bother me at all (plus the perspective thing). Come payday in a few days I’ll likely get more gems and give a few more chests a try (I managed a festive golem out of my first six attempts), but if I don’t get any it won’t be a big deal.
Here’s something interesting… I had a couple Mystic Keys lying around in the bank so I opened two of the newly revamped Black Lion chests. From the two, I got none of the tonics and three large bags of coins (I think that was the name). One of them had pocket change. The second around 25s. The third… the third had a few coppers above 1g 8s. I was not sad.
But please… save the “outrage” for when it’s appropriate. You may not like how something is done in game, but there are far better outlets for the real emotions. Having two young kids and seeing current events really does change your perspective on things.
Maybe stating the obvious here, but it’s pretty blindingly obvious why anet don’t allow miniatures to be trade on TP – it removes a revenue source for them.
If mini were tradable, folks wouldn’t be dumping $$ into Anets coffers to get at them from the RNG chests.
i’ll just leave this here.

I just don’t understand ANets goals for Minis? They are technically only for making money, that’s fine, but now it’s also about exploiting collectors by creating a completely artificial scarcity?
Making them non-tradable is a really underhanded move to score some extra cash. Taking them out of reach astounds me. I mean even the Rytlock Mini is a sure thing if you upgrade to CE.

Rytlock’s a kitten anyway, I would’ve never forgiven logan. I mean my friend dies and we lose to the dragon just so he could get laid???

I bet they start offering a 3-pack on the 21st. Then those of you who already spent real money can pull out the credit card again and spend some more.
It’s extremely unseemly, even if I’m sure the idea was that they didn’t want all the cash-shop players to have them immediately on day 1, but they still wanted to give players a chance at them before they offered the guaranteed purchases (my guess being on the 21st).
Either that, or they really do think their cash-shop players are suckers, addicts, etc. Which is what’s so unseemly about it.

GW2DB shows a Trio-Box for the Lost Shore’s event too.
I bet it was in the GW2 .dat and so GW2DB got it, but was never released.
So don’t be sure about it, it might just be a string in the code that will never show ingame.
Hey guys i played the lottery and didn’t win give me my money back < what this whole convo sounds like. Not only that but this is a free to play game and people are aggravated when they make some money saying they are money grubbing. No not true(about them being greedy) server cost, maintenance, salary for; coders, testers, gm’s, art design ect. On and on i can go about the fact that they are putting out new content, hosting the servers, and paying for their workers without a monthly plan based system. You find out a way to do it without that.

Why do people complain about not getting what they want of gambling boxes?
Every time I go to the casino I don’t win, as a matter of fact, I lose 90% of the times.

I personally don’t complain about not getting what I want of gambling boxes, I complain about the fact that I got no choice BUT gambling if I want to have a certain item.
In fact I gave up my wish on the item because I refuse to use the way that item is distributed. So I bought none of those boxes.
I have neither… but then again I really don’t care

I have to chime in on the whole not trade-able thing. Nothing says “we want you to spend moar money for things you don’t need” like getting duplicate festive hats and three minis of the exact same type.
Why do this? We pay money for this. And we can only use on at a time Why? Now I have 3 extra mini infinis and my brother has two festive hats. What are we supposed to do with these duplicates. Wear two hats on our heads?
Lets hear it for Mini pack!!!!
Yay! – for the mini packs (during all future occasion)
Boo! – for random chance

I would have bought a mini pack (which might be a little bit more expensive like during halloween) with guaranteed pets, rather than having random … nothing (because I have bad luck with gambling).
I did not buy any of those boxes for that reason.
I play RNG too. I flip a coin 10 times. If it lands on head 9 times, I’d buy something from the Cash Shop. Sorry, Anet, better luck next time.
