I was just thinking about the whole Wintersday event and Toymaker Tixx and the fact that Tixx is going to be spending a lot of time out of doors in very cold weather. Then I realized this was pretty much true of all the Asura. Well, I’ve spent a bunch of time outdoors with my human-sized ears and frostbite is a realy concern for me. So, how much worse must it be for something with ears almost as long as they are tall?

Ode to Earmuffs for an Asura

Those poor dears with their big ears!
How can they stand the cold?
When the snow falls and they’re out in their stalls
Is their plight untold?

For an Asura knows when the wind blows.
It can carry such a bite.
And they need care just what it is that they wear
To stay warm throughout the night.

But those poor things with ears like birds’ wings-
Flapping in the breeze.
And all the cold days can make the ice glaze
Upon Asuran ears that freeze.

So think of their plight as you’re resting this night-
Perhaps looking across the bluffs.
That as you can stay warm, they must suffer the storm
For there are no Asuran earmuffs!

Hahaha brilliant.

But, what about ear mitts? That should work for them!

Either that or those touques that look like a jester’s hat. One ear in each side

My initial thotz on the subject ran to using a pair of Santa hats and some wire to hold them together. Not only would it keep their ears somewhat warmer, but they’d look suitably ridiculous which is a requirement for all Asruan fashion.

My goodness! I must remember to look carefully at what I am reading! For a moment there, I thought the thread title was ‘How would you make earmuffs from an Asura!’ … the mind boggles.

Any way, lets think about this a little from a point of view of Asura(n) physiology, biology or other ‘ology’ or such that deals with the Asura(n) body. (I always get my ‘ologies’ mixed up!).

Could it be the the Asura(n) ear pinna is simply a ‘funnel’ type affair with very few if any blood cells or nerve type thingys and as such cold would not really be felt in the outer ear?

If that where the case then, maybe, a simple set of earmuffs very much like human earmuffs placed in such a way as to protect the ear canal and other workings of the inner Asura(n) ear could be adequately employed to stave off the chilly bite of this wintery season.

I really do not know enough about ‘ologies’ (Asura(n) or otherwise) to back up this idea but I do think the argument is reasonable.

I’d prolly use yeti fur harvested from Hangrammr Climb as insulation with good sturdy linen thread to sew the insulation into the harvested Asuran ears. I’d then use a thin band of copper wrapped with linen to put the two ears into ‘muffs’.

If Asuran ears didn’t have adequate blood flow, they’d suffer damage much quicker from the cold. It’s blood flow to the extremities in warm-blooded creatures that provides the necessary heat to keep the cells from being killed by frostbite.

The goal of earmuffs is to trap that heat for as long as possible while keeping the cold air away from the otherwise exposed skin of the ear. The problem is how do you make earmuffs for a creature whose ears compromise so much surface area since that extra surface area makes for a great heat exchanger which is bad during freezing temperatures.

2, See! Told ya I knew little of ‘ologies’! I know even less about them thermally dynamical thingy bobs and heat retention .

That just made me think about this whole earmuff issue though.

As I see it, the Asura are heavily into technology that relies on or uses the natural magic energies of Tyria. We see magic users (in game) creating ‘walls of energy’ such as those that an enemy can not pass.

Could it be possible for some really bright Asura out there to create some sort of magically powered (would need a suitable power source) ‘ear shield’? The ‘ear shield’ could possibly include some sort of heat generation!

Additionally, the ‘ear shield’ would probably create a magical energy shield very close to the skin, maybe even using the natural electro magnetic field of the body as a template (one size fits all)! Could this shield be made ‘breathable’ and, maybe, extended around the whole body?

Excuse me while I go have a quick lie down! LOL

One word – Stockings

Stupid Bookahs! One does not need earmuffs to preserve the magnifisomeness that is an Asura’s ears! My nanoquasithermogolemites are built perfectly for toiling in the vicinity of my awe-inspiring cranium day and night to keep my ears in the perfect toasty condition! Now if only I could shrink those oafish Norn to do it for me… but that would leave me susceptible to their senseless blather… Blast! I’ll have to start over!

One word – Stockings

I would pay upwards of $10 on the gem store for a pair of striped stockings that my Asuran engineeer could wear as “ear muffs” provided I could dye them really garish colors.

Oh, and they’d have to dangle down lower than ears and flop around the way the ears do too.

Downside is that she’d prolly get killed in a lot more fights as her player wouldn’t be able to stop falling down laughing so she’d end up just standing around wondering why her player wasn’t doing something about the zombee abomination that’s bashing her over the head repeatedly.

I think you guys are forgetting that their ears are kinda like ears a floppy eared dog would have, which means they are more flexible than our ears, so I suppose you could just give them a skiing beanie(ones with the long sides on them and they could tuck their ears up into the beanie like a girl with long hair does with a motorbike helmet.

We solved the problem of keeping our cranial extremities warm a long time ago. But you should expect nothing less from staggering intellect. Honestly I don’t understand how bookahs have not figured out at least the basics. Sigh well when you seem to have the cranial capacity of a skritt, earmuffs must sound like a good idea

I enjoyed the poem and its true, Asuran needs must be taken into consideration. I like the idea of ear socks or mitts as proposed above, but think that they could be made into a much more elegant “ear shield”, like some of the asuran style hats which add almost a form of barding to the ears.

Asuran ears are important in communication, so while we heat them, they must not have their movement unduly limited. A light, but heated extra layer that lays over the ear surface would certainly suffice.

You need a better thesaurus for coming up with words that an Asura would actually use when naming EARMUFFS. You also need that S at the end.

Based on this, I’m guessing you’re actually Charr.

They dont need ear warmers, the whole reason for the big floppies is heat radiation, cover an Asurans ears and their brain overheats.
