I wanted more from Wintersday
So, wait… you say you haven’t participated in the event yet, but you’re already complaining about it? Fail.
You want the cities to be decorated…. but they ARE decorated? What exactly are you saying? Are you just complaining for the sake of complaining? Sure sounds like it.
here’s a potato.
Is the potato for feeding the troll? lol
There’s actually been a lot of feedback regarding disappointment with aspects of the festival today, such as not being able to make a party for Toypocalypse and not being able to craft all 5 mini pet toys. The rewards for the long Toypocalypse are rather disappointing, too. A few personalized winterday gifts for the effort is it.

Skull, one city is decorated. Only LA. All of the other cities has it’s “Park here for Tixx” and scattered magical snow. That’s not decoration. I didn’t participate in the event, yet because one during the event it got almost impossible to enter the thing because game kept crashing. And me and my fiance, had opted to wait and see what most of the community felt about the “finale”. From what it looks like, it’s not that good. Am I complaining for the sake of just to “whine”? No, I was really looking forward to Wintersday and it just seems to me, just on the “meh” scale compare to Halloween. Just sayin’.
Actually I was disappointed with the dungeon. From the hype I expected it to go to different cities and be different events. Instead, we just repeated the same events over and over. I did it for all five days at the different locations and made two toys. But found it pretty dull after day three. I didn’t even expect the events to be complex, it was just boring painting the 40 dolls time and time again.
Minor complaint though. The boss was at least different each time, and I think the reward system was intelligently designed. I also find the items and bonuses a lot easier to access than they were for Halloween.
I am actually very happy with Wintersday overall. I’m surprised you haven’t mentioned the activities at all. I really enjoy all of them, especially the Bell Choir Ensemble since I am one of those “musically-inclined individuals.”
Wintersday (and Halloween) is far more than you would ever get in another MMO in terms of holiday events.
I’m not crazy about this event.
On the high note is the art direction, and adding a music game (even if I have no intention at competing at a music game.) The jumping puzzle also finally strikes the right balance.
On the low note is Tixx gameplay recycled a bunch of times with the same grindy content. I would have rather have had a story and epic phases to it.
Also I’m used to GW1 wintersday, which had real finales, unlike this.
I had figured that with a name like “Toypocalypse” there would have been hordes of malfunctioning toys invading Lion’s Arch in wave after wave that we as players would have to fight through in a DE-type event. This, of course, would have ended with a holiday chest filled with a few fabulous rewards for us all saving LA.
Oh, well. Never mind my overactive imagination and unrealistic wish list. hehe
There’s more than enough decoration to go around between LA and the more modest decorations in other cities. It would be REALLY obnoxious if everything everywhere would be completely decorated the way LA is.
And sorry, going off random user reviews first (when the majority of people here just posts to complain and isn’t representative of the experience the majority migh’ve had) instead of trying it out for yourself is just stupid. You’re biasing yourself, and you might’ve enjoyed it, if your first reaction hadn’t been to read and follow the complainers. Now you’ll never know.
Can’t all these similar, whiny-type complains go in one thread? Does everyone really need to make their own? They all contain the same thing.
Skull, all I’m saying is. I expected more from this event then just dungeons and mini-games. If ye want to flame because I’m just letting out an opinion go elsewhere. And besides in Guild Wars, since I’m a Guild Wars Veteran I’m only stating this because they did go OBNOXIOUS with the decoration. Ascalon, Eye of the North, Kamaden, Draknor’s Forge all got decorated. I expected they would do the same, again. I expected an epic storyline like Halloween. I’m not just complaining about one particilar “mini-game” activity for LA. I will get to that sometime between 20th and the 3rd. This something I expected from Arena Net since well I had much love for Wintersday.
So what if I wanna see what everyone’s opinion if they are all (or half) saying the samething. So…if ye don’t like what I am “complaining” about get out of my Old Regrets! And back off before I….turn you into a moa!
Skull doesn’t seem to deal well with people expressing opinions that are different from his own. He’s been in several threads, including mine, to troll anyone that expresses an opinion that is anything other than something along the lines of “I love GW2 in every way and Anet is my god that can do no wrong.”
As for the decorations, I missed the way all the crafting panels had been altered for the Halloween festival with spooky designs. I looked for holiday designs for Wintersday this time around but was disappointed that they hadn’t been changed for the holiday.
I agree about the decorations. I was also looking forward to seeing the other cities decorated, but unfortunately, as the OP has mentioned, they weren’t and it was extremely underwhelming.
I’m also disappointed in the dungeons. I was expecting something, other than a different mini for each city, related to the city’s culture. Painting the dolls 5 times in a row, 40 times, does get incredibly boring. I was mostly just going through the motions after the third time doing the dungeon.
All in all it was nice that they made some effort to have the event and added some fluff. Unfortunately, I’m not a big fan of any of the weapon skins, minis (don’t collect), or costumes introduced.
The actual design/execution of the event was rather underwhelming, as the Tixx events were repetitive and uninteresting, and while I did find one or two of the mini events fun, the rewards were terrible. Additionally, the disturbing gambling system with poor rewards was reinforced and extended to presents and even gem store mini boxes (worse to have people gamble with real money, IMO). On the whole, the event has left me rather dissatisfied for the amount of time/gold invested.
The whole experience has pretty much hammered home the fact that there’s not much in the way of rewards that GW2 is offering me right now. I think any game has to provide some type of reward for playing, whether it’s through an enjoyable story experience or some sort of progression, visual or functional. Right now when I log in I feel as if I’m walking into a casino, unfortunately, with no additional story or tangible progression rewards in sight and only gambling left as a viable means of getting that visual/fun progression.
I really hope GW2 designers turn away from the whole gambling model and provide players more options for progressing through actually playing the game or continue to tell an interesting story, but until then, I don’t see myself playing much. The good news is that with no sub fee they will always have that chance to pull me back in when they do offer something new.
Was the game worth the price of admission from a general entertainment perspective? I would hazard a yes. With sellers offering great 10-40 hour games for $5-10 and the direction GW2 design is currently heading though, it’s hard to make the case that better options aren’t out there for the money.

I was rather amused by Tixx and the toy story. However Im terribly disappointed that Grenth and Dwayna arent fighting. I miss the Grenchies. And Im disappointed that there was no Holiday Hat. The 2 mini pets is nice, but Im tired of having shinys waved in our faces prodding us to open our wallets. IE, show us 5 minis but only let us get 2 instead of just making ONLY 2. GW1 was not this money grubbing until NCSoft took over and even in GW1 it wasnt this bad. This game is starting to leave a bad taste in my mouth and Holiday events are only part of it.

In reality, everyone would just get disconnected and complain on the forums about how ANET is an evil force set out to get them.
lol I did feel badly for all the folks that DCed and missed out on the end event rewards during The Lost Shore. I got DCed during the final event, too, but it was early enough on that I didn’t miss the big chest at the end.
I was a bit let down as well. Especially because of how well they nailed the GW1 Wintersday event.
