The jumping in this engine is for getting over obstacles and up rocks, not for elaborate puzzles.

If they can make these additional things and get them in game why shouldn’t they? Loads of people enjoy them.
At the end of the day if you don’t like that part of the game then just play the parts that you do like and let the rest of us enjoy the bits we do.

Well, because they’re terrible. Straight up.

Feedback doesn’t mean all candy and roses. I don’t have to “like it or shut up” as per the impression i’m getting from several responses. Lots of people enjoy Fox News too, but that doesn’t make it good.

Anet, you have your feedback. Can the jumping.

You think they’re terrible. Lots of other people think they’re great. Some people think they’re the best part of the game. Your ‘feedback’ is just as bad as someone saying they should take out WvW, PvP tournaments or the PvE world.

I don’t know how to say this so it gets through. This is a game. If you don’t want to play it, don’t play it. If you don’t want to play parts of it, don’t play those parts.

You are saying that other people shouldn’t have something they enjoy because you don’t like it. That’s ludicrous.

Finished this one in about two hours. Wasn’t around for the Clocktower puzzle, so can’t compare. I liked this one, but two things were extremely irritating:
1. The wait time. I basically spent about 90-95% of my time waiting. This is really bad for people who have limited time to play.
2. Many people jumping at the same time. Not only is it very distracting, but big character models like Charr and Norn actually completely block the view so it’s impossible to see where you are going or landing.

I would like to have an option of having a separate instance of such JP per player or team (for those that like group jumping).

Otherwise very nice puzzle and really great event altogether!

I thought this JP was better than the Clock Tower, thanks for better inclusion, Anet. For a twist for people who like more of a challenge, perhaps build in a riskier “short cut” which trades time to completion for risk. Please don’t tie exclusive achievements to harder difficulties, it’s a little too exclusive…better loot seems like a more reasonable reward if you differentiate things in the future.

@digitz

Sounds like you would have absolutely hated the Clocktower.
1. The Clocktower had more waiting (longer puzzle, with a substantial skill gate near the start)
2. Only one path, whereas the Wintersday JP is split into multiple starting paths, the Clocktower had everyone together right at the start… which also contributed to the skill gate at the start… which would contribute to the longer wait times for those that hadn’t mastered the first section of the JP.

However, these are some of the factors that many, many people (myself included) loved about the Clocktower. Did you notice how many people, especially Charr and Norn were stripping down to nothing in the Winter JP? That was much, much more important in the Clocktower as there were a lot more distractions about. That was also part of the fun. Seeing as how the Clocktower didn’t have a waiting room activity (watching others doing the JP, or snowball fight), the wait room was a lot more social (in my experience) with a lot more joking around and tips on the JP (including demands for Charr and Norn strippers and associated joking).

You think they’re terrible. Lots of other people think they’re great. Some people think they’re the best part of the game. Your ‘feedback’ is just as bad as someone saying they should take out WvW, PvP tournaments or the PvE world.

Exactly, Ravbek’s post was pretty much the definition of “stop liking what I don’t like”.

Please don’t tie exclusive achievements to harder difficulties, it’s a little too exclusive…better loot seems like a more reasonable reward if you differentiate things in the future.

I’d have to disagree here. exclusive achievements are probably the best rewards for skill gating content. That way everyone is on more even footing when it comes to rewards, except the people that are good at jumping puzzles get an achievement or title that says that they are good at jumping puzzles. It is nice that people that aren’t as good at JP’s aren’t excluded entirely, but for those of us that really, really like challenging JP’s it really cheapens the entire thing.

And its not like you even have to complete the JP for the Wintersday related title, as you only have to complete 12 of 14 achievements I believe. That’s already giving people some wiggle room if they don’t want/can’t do everything but they still want a title that says that they did.

The nice thing about titles is that it is so minor a reward, but it can be fairly prestigious. It is not excluding people from having cool skins, or excluding them from rewards of in game wealth… all it is, is a few letters put together to signify that you’ve completed something. If everyone is given the title for just participating, then it isn’t nearly as prestigious.

Maybe a better idea would be to have different tiers of holiday titles. One could be more or a participation meddle, and another could be reserved for the more exclusive, difficult content… just prefix the title with “Apprentice/Adept/Master” or something.

One of my favorite things about Guild Wars is that there is something for everyone. Jumping Puzzles are not my thing. (I have crippled hands, and I cannot do them. Just not possible.) There are many things in real life that are like that as well. Know your limits, use your gifts.

For those who love the jumping puzzles, then keep them in, and do more of them! For those who do not: Know your limits and do other things.

The one thing I do wish there was MORE of in Guild Wars is puzzle-puzzles. Trivia, brain teasers, things you have to use logic and brain power or real strategy to accomplish. Then…I would rule Tyria.

I know some players can do it, but I keep failling all the time because even if I don’t stop the snowflakes melt under me eventually. I think they should make the melting time a WEE BIT longer. this ain’t a jumping puzzle it’s a stress race. and if a big Charr or Norn is right in front of you… ya you get the picture. Having fun with all the activities but this one needs to be a wee bit easier.

I have to say that I really like this one, Its tricky, but not impossible.. I’ve attempted it about a dozen times, but only made it to the end about 3 times.

I like that you created three different paths within the event to “Weed” people out by the end, while at the same time still allowing us to “Follow” people.. I don’t know how many times I got past the rolling snowball, then didn’t know where to jump to get to the final box, if not for other people being there, I might never have figured it out haha.

I think my only complaint is that the wait between runs is so very long!

I think the Wintersday jumping puzzle was designed well, with multiple starting points to cut down on the mob of players (which made it impossible for me to do the Halloween jumping puzzle since I couldn’t see where i was jumping to through other players avatars).

I think the difficulty was perfect – not too hard, not too easy. I also like that the snowflakes disappear on a timer. Lots of people complaining about that, though, because their wonko PC’s can’t load the game in a reasonable amount of time. I’m afraid aNet will pay too much attention to that and the result will be even longer wait times between attempts.

Those wait times to get in to the puzzle are a problem. They’re entirely too long.

Ok great, everyone loves them, and no one is allowed not to, unless they keep it to themselves.

Setting aside my personal dislike for jumping, anyone who has played a platform game, should understand that this is not platforming at it’s finest, or even at a good level of mediocrity, which is where most of my frustrations lie…

I have to disagree with this. So far, all the achievements can be accomplished with hard work over time. For achievement hunters who can’t do jumping puzzles, this would really stick in their craw.

I’m an achievement hunter with limited amounts of time so I wasn’t able to get the Clock Tower done in the hour I had to spend on it, but I was getting closer…I would have had it with another hour. Now there’s a big blank spot in my achievement log. Yeah…just a game but it certainly bugs me.

This puzzle was just right for me, spent about 30 minutes on it and did it. I have a good computer and some measure of jumping puzzle skill, and for that I’m grateful but I have sympathy for others who aren’t quite there.

You definitely need easy, normal, and hard difficulty levels. The easy level should not have any timing factor, since many people would like to progress at their own pace. I know many people that hate the puzzle because they can’t progress due to the high-pressure, keep-moving elements. Playing a jumping puzzle, should not generate such animosity. So have an easy option that people can take at their own pace.

Also, the wait between attempts is way too long.

Kantankerus: Is having goals that may be unattainable for some really that bad? Yes sure there are many people like you that want to go for those achievements, but there is also a group of people that want achievements that are more prestigious than a time sink or badge of participation.

IMO achievements and titles should be where most of the skill gating comes into play. No one is locked out of any content due to much time or skill requirements, its just an arbitrary number and arbitrary title that people would miss out on. The point of achievements are something you work towards by bettering yourself… not simply sinking a bunch of time into it. Maybe I am bias as I don’t come from an MMO background, but it just feels so dumbed down to have “E for effort” equal to an “A+ excellent job”… it just seems like modern entitlement issues.

RedOak: The problem is, allowing people to go as slowly as they want, and having short wait times are mutually exclusive… unless the puzzle is completely instanced for a single player, or the puzzle is completely static… as with almost every JP in the game.

Also if the different difficulties were of the same puzzle, with time being a large factor then that would simply remove a lot of the fun/excitement/prestige for those that are good at the jumping.

Surbrus: I understand what you are saying and none of your points are without merit but it comes off a bit too elitist for my taste. If this was a platformer and not an MMO where jumping puzzles aren’t even in the top 10 reasons why GW2 is an amazing game, I think your perspective would hold more water. The thing that really strikes me with your concept, though, is the fact that it’s not like that with any of the other achievements in the game…it’s against the grain of what has already been established. In fact, specifically because of this, I seriously doubt we’ll see it, but I’ve been proven wrong more than once.

I would also argue that skill progression is largely a measure of time, not something separate like many like to convince themselves of. Sure, the slope of gain is a bit different from person to person but in the end time is the majority stake holder in skill, whether that time was spent in GW2 or Super Mario Brothers.

They definitely toned it down after Clocktower, and whether that’s good or bad is a matter of opinion.

However, I feel that for these holiday puzzles they seriously need to reconsider the waiting pens. I have no problem with timed puzzles, but it does become seriously irritating to spend more time standing around than participating in the puzzle.

(also, this puzzle is not friendly to slow internet connections and I’ve been booted multiple times while standing on a snowflake or mid jump, but that’s more of a personal issue)

I like jumping puzzles, I like the challenge of them. The Clock Tower was crazy hard, this one was easy that was until I got a message popping up in the middle of my screen asking me if I wanted to leave overflow. Why on earth would I ever want to leave overflow when I’m in the middle of a timed puzzle? Do not ask people if they want to leave overflow once the puzzle has started the last thing anyone needs is that message popping up in front of them when presents are about to explode and they can’t see where they are going and it’s take a leap of faith while trying to click that message away. So yes, liked the jumping puzzle it was a little on the easy side, but then again you may have adjusted the level of difficulty based on various players levels of skill and equipment they may be using. For example: mad king was impossible for me because of my lame mouse (I got another one for my birthday), my boyfriend who is way better at games took a crack at it on my computer, called my mouse a rock. He was able to do it with ease on his computer. But those are my thoughts.

Surbrus: I understand what you are saying and none of your points are without merit but it comes off a bit too elitist for my taste.

Perhaps it might come off as a bit elitist, but really I think this would be the best way to please the most people. As I said, it wouldn’t be like it is gating content, it’s not like someone is never going to see large areas of the game simply because they are not skilled enough or have the time to devote… and it also adds a very superficial reward for those that do like this part of the game.

And yeah sure this might not be how MMO’s are supposed to be, but again I’m not coming from an MMO background so I’m especially confused by why the game has to follow certain guidelines, and not follow guidelines that are more popular in other genres.

But is it really elitist to want a challenge? Many people absolutely loved the Clocktower because of the level of challenge. I’ll probably always remember that JP… just as I will always remember the BWE1 events and skill challenges (actually challenging RIP BWE1 levels of challenge, especially you, Flame Shaman. The Wintersday JP on the other hand, that will mot definitely be forgotten as there simply was no challenge for many people. Dumbing down the JP may allow a different group to enjoy it, but it also robs another group of their enjoyment… whether it is a net gain or loss in enjoyment is up for debate.

The thing that really strikes me with your concept, though, is the fact that it’s not like that with any of the other achievements in the game…it’s against the grain of what has already been established. In fact, specifically because of this, I seriously doubt we’ll see it, but I’ve been proven wrong more than once.

You have a point there. However many of these achievements require what could be literally years of devoted playing. I know that no matter how much I play the game (I hope to play it for a good long time), that I am never going to be able to get all these achievements. Is it really that bad if there are limited time achievements that not everyone can get due to skill requirements? Again it is not gating content, it is simply the prestige of the title and the achievement… the prestige that is lost if it is simply a participation meddle. Why couldn’t we have both participation meddles, and skill demanding achievements side by side?.. or having achievements/titles that are more prestigious in addition to participation achievements/titles?

I would also argue that skill progression is largely a measure of time, not something separate like many like to convince themselves of. Sure, the slope of gain is a bit different from person to person but in the end time is the majority stake holder in skill, whether that time was spent in GW2 or Super Mario Brothers.

I would argue that the slope of gaining skill is a lot more important than the maximum level, especially so for those that cannot devote large amounts of time to an activity.

tl;dr: I still believe that achievements and titles are the best place to put skill restrictions on, as it doesn’t actually deny those with less skill/time of content, yet provides prestige for those that are able… and the those titles/achievements aren’t simply “do x activity y times where y is >1000”, those kind of titles and achievements lose their prestige because one can just “grind” to it.

What is the fun, the accomplishment of doing something easy that everyone is also doing as easily? No fun, only lame. And, if you are not good or you do not like JPs, just skip it. The title only requires 12 achievments anyway omg.

I feel both Mad King Clock Tower & Winter Wonderland JP are awesome! Sure, Mad King’s is harder due to the somewhat vague path during first half, & the brag right from completing it. But it is too short & the intensity lessen during the second half where the jumping part became easier.
As for Winter Wonderland, I think the right word to use is ‘simpler’, as the jumping points are clearer. The redeeming points are the jp is thankfully lengthier, multiple starting pathways & the intensity never let down till the final leap (I screamed “roll FASTER u stupid snowballs!!” during first few tries).
Thank you ANet, for good job in coming up both JP which are great in their own rights

The puzzle on the karka island was timed too, it’s what they do to make them more difficult.

No it’s what they do when they want to make a rush job. They can’t do anything like make you think on your feet, that would require thought put into it. Instead they add an artificial “difficulty” in the form of timed events.

People who cant complete the puzzle seriously need to stop whining. So what if its timed, some people enjoy that. Its not as if there arent 30 other non timed JP for you to complete, and not as if you cant get the chest rewards from taking part in other content.

It’s not worth getting mad over. How many people still play gw2? Maybe a few thousand. People getting mad about a jumping puzzle in a game this far in the grave need to take a look at what they consider worth getting angry about. Now if LoL, or WoW introduced something like this I guess they might have a better reason to argue about it. Actually, I would love it if LoL introduced something like this.

On your 1st point, timed does not have to mean ‘artificial difficulty’. Of course, this depends on your definition of that. If they made a jumping puzzle that required extreme accuracy, would that not fall under ‘artificial’? I, for one, enjoy the timed ones. That’s not saying I’d object to different difficulty increasers, though.

Off-topic, do you truly believe GW2 is that far in the grave? It’s a different topic for a different thread, but it seems just as lively as WoW to me.

I wasn’t able to play during the Clocktower puzzle so I can offer no comparison.

However, I do enjoy this puzzle despite not being able to finish (about 3hrs total time trying). Things stopping me are near 90 degree turns (yes using right mouse button to turn) and my giant charr head bumping into a snowflake I’m trying to jump on. It’s fun to watch the people who can keep going, or throw snowballs at others who failed. I thought the wait was really long, until I realized it waited until everyone had finished or fallen. I like the ability to see most of the puzzle, while hiding the very end.

Perhaps an easier version of the next JP, with less rewards (skilled players should be rewarded) where people can practice jumping and becoming familiar with the types of jumps needed to finish the real JP? I spend so much time waiting, and only about 10-20 sec of actually practicing the jumps.

My god.

Can’t read every page. (got to page 2 and gave up!).
My 2c:
First up (Where I am coming from): I did complete MKCT, but it took me 3hours+ actually “get” it. I did fail several times due to my Australian ping and lag with respect to the lightning-smashed window. (after that I did it several times on my main and on 3 other characters really easily) I really liked MKCT after I finished it, I really felt like I achieved something, AND the loot at the end (I felt as a level 30) was a piece of armor to really aspire to be able to wear! (now I am 80 I do wear my boots!)

Second: This puzzle was good, but I 100% understand where many others are coming from. I also know the solution! Anet are 90% of the way there (I personally think they were thinking of this as a solution, but ran out of time to implement).

Third: I was a little disappointed by the reward. The unique level 80 exotic boots from MKCT (while they may not have had the best stats) were really appropriate I felt as a low-level character I liked having the item to look forward to! I was a little disappointed (but due to the easier puzzle understanding) of the lesser reward.

This will solve the waiting time, the difficulty problem AND my loot sadness!

Solution: 3 difficulties (like others have said). This is how you do it:
The 3 paths are assigned to each difficulty, chosen in the communal area via 3 teleports to the start-platforms.

The Easy [Lets call it ‘Left’] path has VERY little or no health drain.
The snowflakes are permanent, or on VERY long timer. (see after difficulty regarding how to solve the having to wait to restart problem)

The Medium [lets call it ‘middle’] path has perhaps 50% of the current health drain (meant to be easier than current puzzle, but not super easy). Snowflakes on a very similar or slightly longer delay than current.

The Hard [lets call it ‘right’] path has the current health drain. (it really is quite unforgiving currently). Snowflakes should last less time than they do currently. (I never got hit by snowflake slowness except during a poorly timed first load-in)

Now, the above sets a baseline to solve the difficulty issues. Check one.

[All difficulties] The snowflakes should reappear after they disappear. Allowing someone that fails, to be teleported back to the start of the puzzle and retry as soon as the snowflakes are available.

[Medium/Hard] Heal everyone waiting for the snowflakes to re-appear. Easy doesn’t need this if they don’t have health drain.

[All difficulties] The exploding present-steps should explode on a rotation, and reappear. (I personally imagine the pattern to be somewhat like Frogger, presents explode and re-appear in a pattern like cars and logs in Frogger). This allows the exploding presents to be a challenge regardless of how long you spend doing the puzzle (easy moders), and also means the exploding presents don’t need to “reset”, allowing for the instant restart to work.

[Hard difficulty] Exploding presents have an area effect. You have to avoid the step right next to an exploding present in addition to knowing not to stand on it.

Final section: I have no comment, I felt it was appropriate.

Rewards: based on the path you took. (hard with maybe unique armor piece[s]!)
Easy [Achievement] Medium [Achievement+gifts] hard [Achievement+gifts+title?]
or just add 3 achievements, have small gifts on easy, medium on medium, giant on hard.

Solves difficulty [check] (3 timing-related varied paths)
Solves between attempt wait-times [check] (constant rotation)
Solves loot sadness [check] (due to difficulty, special loot won’t be too easy to obtain).

Constant rotation should alleviate some of the crowding issues my idea may re-introduce.

shrug hope this feedback is useful to someone.

The question should be ‘why not timed JPs?’. The rest of the game is already filled with normal puzzles and those are boring with no challenge at all to it.

This one had a amazing look and was too short to the point to be disappointing, I personally hope anet makes more puzzles and more alike the halloween one, or this one but longer…it had alot of potential but most of the area was used to split groups.

Way too easy.

Took me 3h to finish Clocktower, such an awesome feeling when I finally did it!
This one took 10min, second try and was really really boring compared to clock tower…

The wait time seemed a bit long too.

Why not go all the way, and make every piece of content in the game super easy so anyone, including my cat and my 2 year niece can do it, first time? Surely then everyone will be happy!

Of course, the game would be boring as anything, and most players would stop playing after a few days, but at least those who find jumping puzzles hard would be happy.

Yes mate, a few thousand only now play GW2. You nailed it right there.

The non-stop overflow servers on the hundreds of world servers are just created by Anet to give the illusion of lots of players, in reality its just you and that guy you met a few weeks ago.

Oh and of course they just banned around 30,000 bots, who had been reported by players this month – so those few thousand players (including you I guess) have been REALLY busy!

Allow me to just let my very active guild know that they may as well quit due to the servers being empty now. Thank god you warned us all!

Well the problem is very clear.

They give an exam to everyone that ranges from 6 year-old kids to 70 year-old people in the aspect of their abilities in Jumping puzzle and everyone has to finish it within the same clock.

A seasonal event achievement should be something to prove that you have attended, not something you can do or not. The PvP one is exactly the same. Some people can finish it within a few hours while some others would never even able to even get one count after 20 hours of play.

The reason to promote everyone to level 80 for the event dungeon is to make them capable to complete it, i.e. be able to participate. It becomes something you want to do or not, instead of something you cannot do if you are still low level.

They should make the achievement for JP and PvP the same. Currently these 2 are what you can do or not, not what you want to do or not.

People saying they cannot load in before the snowflakes disappear. Does your system meet the requirements? Because that should really not be happening at all.

Why timed? Because I suspect it sets an upper limit on the amount of time that each puzzle runs… therefore keeping the wait times down… therefore keeping crowding down during the puzzle itself. Also, probably keeps server usage low by limiting the number of puzzles that run concurrently… and thereby keeping a lid on lag.

Which would all be good reasons to my mind, and even if it wasn’t by design it seems to be working:

  • Wait times are not terribad… in fact once you get the hang of the puzzle, you can complete it and get back to the waiting area with only a few seconds to wait before going again.
  • I have had no problems with crowding – only 4 or 5 others each time I go. So usually no more than one or two giant Norn/Charr blocking the view, and you can either outrun them or let them run ahead, so not much of a problem.
  • I have had no problems with lag, which is impressive given past performance in other events.

By the way, the only time I get the snowflakes already melting when I load, is if I complete the puzzle and return to the waiting area just as the next run is starting. I don’t have a high-spec PC and my ping is nothing special.

The problem with “it should all be for everyone” is that it makes it all BORING. I don’t want to go through these events like a zombie crossing off “things to do” from a list. If that’s what it’s all about than maybe these seasonal events are not for me.

I would like to make some constructive comments here.

Firstly, I love jumping puzzle, be it timed or not. For your info, I failed at Mad King Clock Tower, played till the very last minute. Didn’t even got close to the end point.

This one, I was just a few inches away. Yet, to complete still. Yes, it is simpler than clock tower and I am truly grateful that devs are listening.

1. 3 Platforms idea was brilliant. We have less players blocking each others view. +1

2. Timings I feel is just right.

3. A lot of better coordinated players, are complaining that it is too easy.
May I suggest that completed players be automatically “upgraded” to a higher difficulty upon every completion of the course?

a) This will also allow other players to have a chance to practice without them completing the whole course all over and over and over again.

b) This will minimise the “waiting” time for other beginner/practicing players.

c) This also solves the issue of players complaining that it is too easy. The higher the difficulty, the better the loot. That will be the carrot for them repeating it.

4. The observation tower is great, at least we can see other player’s progress and cheer them on. (Although, they will be too busy to notice)

Thanks!

and Happy Holiday!

Can I suggest the JP, both clocktower & wonderland, to be available for a longer period of time (if possible, permanently)? Those who are unable to complete them (for now) will have the opportunity to do so at later date when they have enough practice & confidence. It will ease some pressure stem fr completing the puzzle that is available for limited time only.

I enjoyed this puzzle, but I can understand people’s lament. A friend of mine has a similar problem limiting their ability with the timed puzzles.

Additionally: My first four times I jumped through the open present at the end I just got teleported back to the start of the puzzle again. That was a little frustrating and I thought I was doing something wrong, but it turned out it was a bug shrugs.

ANet please dont accomodate players that are terrible at JPs by making holiday JPs lame, boring and easy. The majority of your community can actually play timed JPs and finds fun in the challenge of them.
