Much more sane than the clocktower. Yes it will be too easy for some Jumping Heroes, but I think it sits at that sweet spot where the vast majority of players will be able to complete it with only a mild level of learning and repetition. Probably wouldn’t want to make it any easier though.

I like jumping puzzles. This one is ok so far, I’m certainly having a tough time with it. The timed aspect of health ticking away isn’t a bad idea, though the snowflakes and presents disappearing I don’t like.

Don’t listen to the people who say they are too hard. They are just not putting in the time or effort and solely want the rewards for it so they can get their weapon/armor skins.
For me, the challenge is a big part of the reward.

So in short from me, Harder Jumping Puzzle = Better Jumping Puzzle.

This made me sick when I read it. I’m over it now because obvious it’s an opinion. Firstly, I think there should be different difficulties. This is why I’m insulted though:

Me and a friend (who doesn’t play guild wars 2 after halloween) both have mental disabilities that simply don’t allow us to cope with timed puzzles. Specifically the clock tower. My wrist was recovering at the time and I ended up putting it back in a splint during the clock tower. I never made it. It’s… and I don’t mean to say this as a personal attack, because I’m more trying to raise awareness for EVERYONE who posts like this – but it’s really… insensitive… almost idiotic to suggest that something should be restricted to only the most hardcore of players.

I’m glad I hear they made it easier. This game has catered to hardcore players for far too long. I play hard and I find many things challenging. I ENJOY those challenges, and it’s only because I’m actually mentally unable to even hope to complete some things that I’ve had to let it go, and go back to finding vistas. I’m happy with being excluded from a thing here or there, but for fark sakes, posts like the OP, if listened to will have me unable to play the game like my friend.

Granted I’m told the clock tower rewards sucked, I think holiday JPs should be about pure prestige, and not cosmetics beyond the physiological OR hardware limitations of ANet’s player’s: a title only. No exclusive skins.

It’s like a publicly scheduled Christmas party where all the food is on the second floor with no ramps or elevators.

I wasn’t even ticked about the situation until I read the OP. It’s very much NOT in the Wintersday spirit.

Jumping puzzle was easier than the clocktower for me but more annoying with my largeish charr. There’s one pair of candy canes in the middle of one of the snowflake paths where jumping to cane 2 screws up the camera and makes it impossible to see, and the same thing happens but worse at the very end when you’ve got to jump onto the thin cane to the right between the two blue presents. After my third failure because of the camera I literally closed my eyes and just went off memory of where I should’ve been jumping to to get through that gap and it worked.

We’re delivering presents, why not have an NPC in the staging area willing to temporarily turn you into a human-sized and human-animated elf thing to cheer up the children at the other end?

I love the jumping puzzles, it feels like a test of skill in the same way that a good boss fight should. There’s no ability for individual professions or races to shine, though, so given the differences in camera behavior between them, why not provide the option – at least for challenges like this – to level the playing field for players who want it?

Maybe a gauntlet style jump puzzle.

You could handle that any better than timed jump puzzles, Munson?

Yes I can. Because I can get lined up, I can get prepared for it. This jump puzzle is- load in later than others, have two seconds to get on and off first couple snowflakes, oh didn’t make it? wait a minute before you can start again. There is a major difference between gauntlet style jumping and timed jumping

I’m going to jump on the “varying difficulty” bandwagon for the next event JP. A brief example:

1.) No timer on “snowflakes” but health does drop at a lesser rate. Link the achievement to this one.
2.) That backwall starts pushing players forward and health degenerates to match it. Have loot available for being this level.
3.) Backwall pushes while the health drops at a faster rate than the wall. Epic loots come with this one and maybe a second achievement that is not required for the event title.

I don’t see how this wouldn’t please everyone. Once you complete one level, you move on to the next. This also will break the “large groups” apart.

Do you see the sins you’re making? ‘Cuz I’ve made them all before.

No doubt they are harder, have you tried using Mouse 1 + Mouse 2 simultaneously for forward movement and a side mouse button bound for jumping? Haven’t tried it myself but should work. Buddy of mine in my guild plays like that all the time and he managed to complete the Clocktower 1 handed (hats off to him).

WHY WHY is it another timed puzzle? … My personal keymapping and play style (works great for pve what i mostly do) does not work well for these quick turns and jumps needed and with the wait between its not worth even doing, I can get presents faster by not doing the puzzle which means the only reason to keep doing it is the achievement (not worth the time imo)

Anet, next event try something like this:
Puzzle A and B, each with 2-3 difficulties

Puzzle A – timed puzzle with an easy mode (more time for those who are not fast jumpers/need to turn not as good with mouse or w/e) and a harder mode which is likely somewhere between this puzzle and the clock tower. Maybe add in a even harder (faster maybe? need complete the lower levels 1st) with each difficulty giving slightly more rewards. while the rewards may not need to be much better as the puzzle is faster so you can repeat it quicker.

Puzzle B – not timed, but difficult jumps, wind/bombs/(other creative obstacles {ppl tossing snowballs, avalanches, runaway rolling snow balls would have been here for wintersday} that need to be avoided/timed) with the higher difficulties having better rewards.

this would satisfy most everyone in giving multiple puzzle types (those who like timed and those who like more difficult ones that you can take your time on) and difficulties that can challenge the better jumpers and also not exclude people from the content.

I like the fact there is not an exotic prize at the end that makes me feel compelled to finish this puzzle. I don’t like jumping puzzles but will do them for such a large prize as I did with the clock tower (took me hours…).
I was not having fun trying this new one and after I found out the reward I was relieved I could leave and not feel like I ‘missed out’.

This one is actually harder for me than the Mad King Clock tower. I think I found out why. I use the keyboard to shift my view around (ie the ‘W’ and ‘R’ keys along with the the normal AW&D.
I just realized that others do some kind of holding the mouse key down while running (makes turning the camara VERY fast). This is almost impossible for me as I have been playing for months now the way I am and it would take too long to learn the other way well (I tried for a bit). This puzzle has a lot of ‘double backs’. The keyboard way of turning your view is not quick like the mouse way. I have to pause for a few ms when on a snowflake that has the next jump at a 90 angle. It is not a smooth circle like the clock tower. Since I have found no way of increasing the speed of my camara turn (sensitivity) in the options this puzzle is exponentially harder if you use a keyboard to turn your view.

Thank you for the way it is implemented but consider either adding a way to turn keyboard users sensitivity up or don’t have so many double backs. Increase the difficulty in other ways.

The entire of GW2 should not be designed around a minority of players who have trouble. Pretty silly thing to say.

Nor should it be designed around bad design. Timed jumping puzzles on a 3D game with an unstable camera. Timed jumping puzzles in general are just a cheap way to inflate difficulty without adding any actual intellectual difficulty to it. Like the limited lives/insert coin to continue system of old arcade games.

this is spot on!

i find it very hard to judge jumping distances and overall depth of field in this game unless i use specific camera distance (somewhat mid-way between full zoom out and full zoom-in).

making jumping puzzles timed is just adding to frustration.

oh, and that puzzle is also loaded with what i could call “tripping wires”. the places where majority of people will slip off because a platform is slightly tilted, a place where 1 platform’s corner is cutting into another platform so a character can get stuck on it or even bump it’s head against if it’s an asura, etc etc…. it’s all artificial. it’s there to make it more frustrating and more annoying without adding any actual content.

People who cant complete the puzzle seriously need to stop whining. So what if its timed, some people enjoy that. Its not as if there arent 30 other non timed JP for you to complete, and not as if you cant get the chest rewards from taking part in other content.

Some people enjoy a challenge and this one is MUCH easier than the clocktower, they have tried to accomodate as many people as possible.

If you are still struggling, try harder or just quit and rememebr you dont need to do everything. If you hate something..just dont play it.

I personally have bent fingers from an accident where i broke them as a kid, makes it really hard to correctly press the buttons for bells. Did I moan and demand its made easier? No I spent 2 hours practicing and enjoying myself and managed to come 4th finally and got both achirvements.

And before anyone bothers to commen this is a narrow minded view please THINK that the many other players enjoyed the puzzle and consider them too. You arent entitled to everything, and demanding things are changed just for you is much more narrow minded and inconsiderate than just saying..oh well i gave it a good try and moving on.

Really the only legitimate complaints are lag and that some peoples loading times are too long, meaning they cant get onto the first platform fast enough. Any other complaints are just people being awkward.

The puzzle on the karka island was timed too, it’s what they do to make them more difficult.

No it’s what they do when they want to make a rush job. They can’t do anything like make you think on your feet, that would require thought put into it. Instead they add an artificial “difficulty” in the form of timed events.

It’s not worth getting mad over. How many people still play gw2? Maybe a few thousand. People getting mad about a jumping puzzle in a game this far in the grave need to take a look at what they consider worth getting angry about. Now if LoL, or WoW introduced something like this I guess they might have a better reason to argue about it. Actually, I would love it if LoL introduced something like this.

I dont get it, it’s not that hard. I almost got it on my second try but I took too much time and died. The hardest part for me was over jumping the candy canes poles. It’s super easy and I spent 4 hours on the clock tower. This was nothing compared to that. It’s not like you HAVE to complete it. If you want the title is says any 12, so if you choose not to do this one you dont have to. Seems like people will complain no matter what you give them so I say keep making these neat puzzles. I’d hate for it to be too easy, I like a challange. If I got to the top so quickly it doesnt make much of an impression. Having to give it a few tries makes it that much more exciting when I reach the goal.

I think “Skipping Stones” is a fine example of a timed puzzle. The platforms appear for limited time and there is a wait involved, however, the wait is for that specific part of the puzzle, not for the whole thing. There are parts that give the player a chance to breathe before the next timed part.

I think future event “timed puzzles” should be more like that. Little checkpoints as you go along, with bits appearing and reappearing as you go.

The same could have been done here. The candy canes sticking out of the walls  and the floating peppermints could have acted as “break points”, allowing the player a second to breathe and wait for the next bit.

And none of this “loading in” to the puzzle. That is the worst thing. Being in the map but having to load the puzzle. People with slow connections fall behind straight away. In Skipping Stones, you can stand at the beginning when ready, and progress when you want. You’re not forced to try every single attempt.

I’m also fine with the variable difficulty, but I really don’t think it will help. I’m having trouble understanding some people.

The Mad King’s Clock Tower was hard. Yes. It took me hours to finally get it. But I had fun doing it.

People complained it was hard. They had every right to complain.

Winter Wonderland is not hard. I’m bad at jumping puzzles, I often have to use mesmer portals in order to get back up when I fall, and I fall pretty often. I got this puzzle in under 10 tries in less than a half an hour’s time. So did 3 of my friends who were on Skype with me.

People are complaining it’s too hard, including one of my other friends on Skype. He complained about it while doing it, and then finally before he gave up he said something that I think clarifies the problem “I don’t like jumping puzzles”.

BOOM. Headshot.

Even if we make a setup like this…

Hard Mode – Normal Mode, but the flakes break faster, health drains faster, and there is snow which varies in thickness (obscuring vision)
Normal Mode – Same as current.
Easy Mode – Flakes do not break, health does not drain.

…it wouldn’t matter for some people. Because it’s still long, it’s still multiple parts, and it’s still a jumping puzzle. It really seems like no matter how easy it gets, people are still going to want it to be easier.

Can all of you at least agree that this is MUCH improved compared to the clocktower?

-Body blocking is mostly solved as there are now 3 separate paths and you get a full 360 view (since you don’t have a tower constantly to your right), so it’s easier to get a proper view.
-The “breaking blocks” behind you are fairly slow, so as long as you keep a reasonable pace, you won’t die (unlike the clock tower where you pretty much had to run full speed up to a certain point).
-The path is clear and straightforward (no suicide jumps or waiting for the path to be built in front of you).
-You can see the puzzle (except the end part, which is a straight line through some varied size presents) from the start, meaning you can watch other players as well as see what is happening.

Personally I think this puzzle like the clock tower one sucks. I really do not like these timed jump puzzles. For some reason my PC lags at these puzzles and I can never seem to make the jumps on time. I’ve tried but always keep getting thrown off at the second step. Then the long wait to restart.
For those who have done it congratulations, ANET decided to design the game just for you, again.
P.S.: The blocks start breaking right when I land on them. How is everyone else experiencing blocks breaking after they have left?

Personally, I tried it a few times and gave up in frustration. It’s not that the puzzle is “too hard” per se, it’s just annoying to attempt.

1) It’s timed. I’m sorry, but I don’t like this. I find it stressful instead of fun. I’m usually slow and deliberate with my jumps.

2) Failing puts you through a loading screen and then forces you to sit there waiting for a while. This is really the one major issue for me. It’s just so annoying to have to wait so long between attempts that I stopped trying.

So unfortunately I wasn’t really a fan of this.

(The environment itself is incredible, I should say. Beautiful, and having it within the Snowglobe in LA’s was inspired)

Have you tried turning your graphics settings all the way down?

And do you have these kind of lag issues elsewhere in the world, or just in the jumping puzzle? I haven’t seen any lag in the jumping puzzle yet (nothing that would kill me at least), but I do get lag in things like zerg rushes in WvW.

Also, I agree the loading area sucks. But it is cool that you get to watch other people doing the puzzle.

I think a huge thing (if it is a PC issue), is that you may want to consider upgrading. When I was in beta, I was using my current PC, but without my new graphics card. The game was fun, it was decent looking, but I had lag issues. When I dropped the $200 dollars on a new (decent quality) graphics card, suddenly the game was beautiful and I experience little to no lag. My enjoyment of the game increased a lot.

This game on max settings is stunning.

I may be in the minority here but i think the Clock Tower was easier, The clock tower took a little longer to master do but it loaded faster, had less jumps (less chances for mistakes) and instead of 1 path you need to learn 3 of them.

I mastered the clock tower around an hour or so, and from then on I could easily run it consistently back to back. I think I did it 13-14 times, getting the boots on my 9 toons. Now I’ve ran the wintersmaddness puzzle way too many times, I have somewhere around 15 completions, but I consistently mess up over and over again.

You can’t really slow down in this puzzle, if you do your going to get killed by the frostbite DOT. My camera goes crazy in several spots, I had to turn off my double tap for evades which then makes it harder if from the AOE chill rings near the end. I had the Tower down to a science, I’m not sure why this one is giving me problems, i think it’s the shiny snow flakes, or it could be the fact I haven’t had a smoke in 2 days and i’m loaded on caffeine.

Anyhow, I would say it’s easier in some regards to the Clock tower, but harder in the fact you have a lot more jumps to screw up on.

Downsides:

The Norn and Charr mess up the view again, if you get more than 3 people starting you can lose track of your toon easy, I usually hold back for a second to let the others get a little bit ahead of me and then speed up once they have fallen off or I over take them 1 at a time.

WAIT TIME, holy crap, that is what kills me every time, it’s even worse if you screw up right at the start with a bad jump. 2 minute waits are just plain evil, I usually run over the fence to watch the other guys jumping secretly hoping that they fall off quickly, then I hit rock bottom once they get past the gifts and I can’t see them, while I wait and wait and wait some more.

Anyway, Interesting puzzle, seems like the easiest way to get gifts at the moment in terms of time vs reward, IF your not cracked out on caffeine and can do these consistently.

I really wish that it didn’t remove traited health, I went from 25k Hp to 17k HP. So when I first got to the final box I had 600 hp left and died inches from completing it. But I did manage to complete it 10 tries later.

That being said, it is a god send that the pack gets split up into 3? possible jump routes. It would have been HORRID if everyone followed one path!

I’m pretty sure the health tick is percentage-based (you lose a certain percent of your total health every second), so it wouldn’t matter if they let you keep your traited health or not, you’d still die exactly as fast.

I like the Wintersday jumping puzzle quite a bit. Its easier than Clock Tower certainly, but its still fun and challenging enough.

The only real complaint I have would be the wind. Its really hard to tell when its blowing and when its not. Half the time I run through anyway even though I can see the wind blowing and I get by without getting knocked, and other times I see no wind, run, and get blown off the platform. Probably can’t be changed at this point, but in the future I’d suggest using a more visible obstacle like a laser or something if you’re going to do a “time your running past this obstacle” sort of thing.

Well, the reward for the puzzle is also kind of meh. Clock Tower gave an Exotic item, all you get here are a few packages, some vendor trading stuff, some karma and a crafting material. And repeat runs only get you 3 packages, where repeat runs of the Clock Tower got you 5-10 ToT bags. I guess the decreased reward is probably intentional so that people who can’t do it don’t really miss out on anything, which I suppose I’m fine with.

Gotta say, loved this jumping puzzle. My only complaint is that it could’ve been a little bit harder. Not Clocktower hard, though, I spent 16 hours on that sucker and still couldn’t beat it (although roughly half my attempts ended due to point #1 below so that’s a big part of it). This puzzle fixed the three major problems I had with the Clocktower:

1) The influence of lag on the timed element. With the Clocktower you lost when the ooze/smoke stuff reached you, and when that happened was dependent not just on how fast you were, but on how good your connection was. If you lagged any you could see yourself ridiculously far ahead of the smoke but still randomly lose. With the Wintersday puzzle you only lose when you actually fall or when you run out of health, which seemed much less susceptible to connection issues.

2) The wait time. With the Clocktower you had to stand around doing absolutely nothing between tries which just added to the annoyance and tedium of the puzzle. With the Wintersday puzzle, however, we had snowballs to throw at each other which was a lot of fun. The wait time seemed to move much faster thanks to having something to do.

3) Camera issues. With the Clocktower there was so much random floating crap in the way that the camera would frequently bump into something and zoom in until all I could see was the back of my character’s head. The Wintersday puzzle had none of that, the whole time I felt like the camera was working with me instead of trying to troll me.

So overall Anet, the Wintersday puzzle was a HUGE step in the right direction and I hope to see more special event jumping puzzles like this.

Just a quick bit of feedback to say I think the difficulty was spot on. It was easier than Mad Kings which made my RSI flare up from the amount of tries I spent on it, but far from trivial.

I liked how the snowballs and winds made you have to think rather than just know it by muscle memory.

Having multiple initial paths helped a lot when it came to the initial rush of jumpers, by the time the paths merged, enough people had fallen that there was plenty of clearance to see your toon.

Pretty easy. Got this one in like 6 tries. I’m fine with that. Splitting up the players into different paths does help mitigate the issue of being able to see your char but more because it reduces the chances you get grouped with large, view blocking charr/norn. The wait time to start would be rage inducing except for the fact that I completed it in fairly low amount of attempts.

I will complain that it is no where near as visually awesome as the clock tower

Edit: Perhaps the clock tower has desensitized me but after completing the winter puzzle I find it boring. The clock tower I had a lot of fun repeating it. Not a big deal though

One thing I appreciate about this puzzle more than the Mad King one (and I loved the Mad King one) was the increased randomness. Follow the path the snowballs are coming down using the peppermints on the side to avoid them. You will go around a sharp bend to the left leading up and then a bit up from there you will see some presents off to the right side. Jump across the presses and candy canes and jump into the shining yellow door/opening(watch the opening cinematic when you first ‘zone in’ to the jumping puzzle. It will show up the course ending with a zoom into the finish).

I would like to know where the finishing line is… I keep dying at the rolling snowballs because I have no clue where to go next.

Ty! I had a feeling it would be there but I keep jumping on the wrong presents I think as I just slide down from them. Oh well..

I’ve always jumped on the blue presents and one of the candy canes in the middle. Trickiest jump there is the candy cane in the middle.

Thanks for opening this thread up!

On a scale of 1-10 (1 being easy, and 10 being so hard not even going to attempt) I’d rate:

  • clock tower a 10 (for me, I tried it twice and just didn’t even bother with it)
  • winter tower was a strong 7 – 8. (Out of probably a dozen times, I’ve made it maybe twice.)

Really, there was a great compromise. There’s still a time limit, but it is somewhat forgiving. Most of the time I died from either the candy canes, or just psyching myself out at the gifts (before the rolling snowball).

Absolutely great job! This was fun enough to keep me coming back for more, even though I rarely finish it!

I am so disappointed by the jumping puzzle. It took me literally about 10 minutes to figure it out and finish it. There was no sense of accomplishment at the end. I felt the Halloween one was almost perfect, if I had to rate them I’d give the Halloween one a 9.5/10 and the Christmas one a 3/10. The Halloween JP had a nice pace to it, it was challenging, had the right length and obstacle variation in it. Winter Wonderland on the other hand feels so boring. The first part is (almost) always the same jump with the same distance. The second part is just weird with those falling presents. I don’t really see how it’s a challenge at all. The third part imo does not fit into a jumping puzzle. It’s also not a challenge because you got so much time between the boulders.

All in all it’s just such a disappointment for me especially because I’ve had so much fun with the Halloween one. Maybe my expectations where just too high

Anyway, here is a quick run through.

I love jump puzzles. The MK one was crazy.. I never finished it but had a blast. I still haven’t finished the new one, and probably won’t, it’s just fun trying and interacting with other people.

I give MK a 10, but the Winterday one a 6. I can’t really explain why I am not liking it as much, it has nothing to do with difficulty. It just doesn’t have the pizazz MK did, it’s a little dull. Doesn’t mean I wont spend many hours trying to see how far I can get though.

I really like how you made the staging area a big group, but then split us off 3 ways, with slightly different jumps. That’s the one improvement. I guess I’m just disappointed because it looked so crazy when I first entered it and saw the cinematic. But it’s just not as chaotic as I thought it’d be.

The OMG this is NUTS factor is missing.

personally, i like the timed puzzles.

over all, it seems like it’d be a really good idea to have different difficulty levels available. so whoever wants their puzzle to be easier/harder or timed/not timed can choose whatever they like.

even if just the timer is optional, i think that would be enough to add a “challenge mode”. and have the normal mode be not timed.

Just because something is easy for all of you doesn’t mean it is for everyone else — do you realize how arrogant you sound? “OMG THIS IS SO EASY!@#$!@!!!” You sound like an 8 year old.

Well it WAS easy, especially compared to Clock Tower.

I really liked the look of the puzzle but like others said, it’s a bit too easy.

I’m with the peeps who don’t think they’re entitled to everything in a game because they bought it. It’s like buying a tennis racquet and asking your opponents to play worse to match your level of skill then complaining to an umpire whenever you lose.

Seriously, this jump puzzle was easy. If you disagree then you’re just bad at jump puzzles and everyone that isn’t shouldn’t have to be brought down to your level because you feel entitled to doing something you can’t. So much tears on this forum over easy kitten.

Personally, i’m disappointed with the jump puzzle, the walk in the park “dungeon” that took like 5 mins all catering to the “entitled” little noobs.

I haven’t managed to get past the snowflake part so far but I’m really enjoying it and have no complaints.

It’s not easy but it’s do-able, with practice and that is exactly as it should be.

Always keep in mind: what’s easy for you may not be easy for others. Keep the games available to every player skill range.

Whether something is either wrong or right, someone will always complain about it.

5 hours of trying and I still haven’t gotten through it. It isn’t easy for me.

I must be really bad at jumping puzzles then, I completed Clocktower 20 times in about 3 hours and Griffonrook run with a bomb twice in about 4 hours, and this one about 15 times in around 4 hours This one isn’t easy either, more forgiving yes but you have way more fail points.

I hear it is an easier puzzle, but for myself I play on a old labtop with close to the most min requirements to play the game. Right now I currently do not have access to my desktop computer and a big issue right now for me with the timed event is that I can’t even load into the instance before the snowflakes start disappearing. I have yet to leave the starting point on any of the attempts I have made at this puzzle. I for sure will not be able to complete this puzzle due to not having a higher quality system. I would hope they could just add in a start timer or gate like they did with the Halloween puzzle so it would give people like myself enough time to load in before the timed event started.

I absolutely agree. I felt like there where just as many people who said the clocktower JP was awesome as people who complained about it. I don’t understand why they had to make it THAT easy now, don’t the people who enjoy a challenge count for anything?

Now this thread is about Winder Wonderland but I also agree about the dungeon (we’ve seen only the first, so that might change). Once we’ve finished the boss all in our group where like … “That’s it?”.
