Omg the EU servers were lied too and nobody else was!
They already said that it would be out sometime today… which is about 8 hours left of today their time. So they still have not lied to you.
They have, because on every EU website it was announced to be on the 14th.
yeah i dunno why people are suddenly surprised that ANet uses PST.
In game bottom left corner of the mini-map there is even a clock with server time 0.o
Not to mention they’ve always been using pacific standard time. Even for the beta weekends >.<
I think part of the problem here (at least, this is -my- problem) is that there didn’t seem to be this issue in GW. Specific times were almost always given for the beginning of special events. A lot more often than not, the events would begin exactly (or within a few minutes) of the time stated.
I suspect that a lot of these so-called ‘QQing’ players may have been previous (maybe even current) players of GW, and expect the same type of communication as they did/do there, given that we’re dealing with (I think?) the same studio staff.
I know that, for myself, I’d much rather the communication type received in GW than what we’re getting here. I am anxious for the event to begin, because due to RL stuff that’s TMI to go into here, I could really use some frickin’ holiday cheer. For whatever reason, I’d like to get it here in Tyria.
Also, for those who are stating that the ‘Wintersday event starts tomorrow’, ie the 15th, I’d like to point out that the official ad states that the event runs from December 14 – January 3. I’m assuming those dates are inclusive. It’s the Tixx events that begin the 15th. Some of us probably consider town decorating/holiday npc appearance/whatnot (and probably the puzzle/PvP/minigame) as part of the Wintersday event. I’m one of them.
This inability to give a start time, and to deal with an International, world spanning playerbase in a Professional manner is astonishing. Seriously – requiring all the players (many of whom probably don’t speak english or have any idea where you studio is, and WHY should it be THEIR responsibility to know that in the first place?) to do all the work regarding time zones etc. on every announcement that has a time component is your idea of best practice?? I watch these attempts at PR and just ….
Sigh.
Umpteen years developement, and several months of preperation for what was in GW1 traditionally the biggest event, and this critical (imo) release is so shaky that the release time it is just sometime, 12-14-12, in your Your Time Zone. Hatchling the rest of the world.
Announce December 14th, 2012 at 11:59:59 PM PST (and possibly give the local times for key zones in Europe and Asia where of course IT IS the 15th already) and be done with it.
If you beat that time maybe someone will care. At least it will shut people up. I’m going to go read a good book.
Great Hedgehog shot, wish I could find mine to give a prickly smile back. And really I am hoping for a dandy event.
I think Marvani forgot that the first events in GW were never mentioned before they happened. Now they have a player base that is chomping at the bit every moment before new content. Mix all that with a game that is still in the newborn stages of growing up and you have complainers and people who don’t understand the logistics of handling a release of new content.
Everyone chill out and relax, Wintersday will happen and it will be fun. Fun means different things to different people and they are trying to cater to a lot of them. I mean seriously I get some guitar hero style play in GW2, that is awesome sounding in itself.
They are already showing they learned from the Karka event by saying that all of the 1 day city events can be replayed once Tixx gets to LA. So just be patient and have a holiday beer with me while we wait
The most positive thing from this whole thread is the fact that people are showing excitement for Wintersday, yes i mean the people complaining too. You care is why you complain.
Good luck to all and Merry Christmas!
Where was everyone for Halloween and the Lost Shores? Same thing happened, people from EU kittened and moaned about the updates. Just chill out.

The longer-term problem is that Arenanet is getting a reputation for being unprofessional. So far we’ve had three major events (Halloween, Karka, Wintersday) and not one of them has been released, working, at the time that was advertised to paying customers. That’s not the way to attract new customers, or to convince your existing customers to give you more money.

“sometime today, Pacific Time” is the most hilarious thing I’ve ever read in terms of giving a time in which something will take place. Let me just set my alarm to sometime today, and I better make sure its PST sometime, and not EST sometime! The timezone tagged at the end seems so obnoxious, you seriously can’t give an hour in which something will occur within the next 8 hours? You have a 1 in 8 chance of being right, highball it.
I guess it’s worth noting that “sometime today, Pacific Time” could also mean “midnight the next day, Pacific Time” as its been shown in a few previous updates.

No, the one-time events had times listed (with, as you say, ‘PST’ clearly marked) but the European website simply stated ‘December 14th’ as the launch time for the ‘festivities’ generally.

You guys from EU need to calm down. When Anet releases stuff like this it’s always been by PST. Everybody is going to get the content at the same time. You’re not special and are going to get it earlier than everyone else just because it’s almost the 15th over there. This isn’t WoW you know.
We’re not demanding to get it earlier than the rest. What we’re demanding however is a clear advertisement.
Yes, it might be the case that most of the time they mean PST. But they have to state so clearly on the advertisement. And not by “huh, that’s well known, we can just put up information in PST and let them complain”.
It’s not “you guys from EU need to calm down.” Move ANet to a timezone -x hours from yours, and you’ll start complaining at some point too.
Halloween came out around midnight (PST) of the announced day. You guys are gonna have to be a little more patient.

I have no big problem with waiting. I have a problem with false advertising and my plans being mixed up due to it. If I had known beforehand….I could wait in patience for a long time.

So your idea of fairness is that we get patch at 3AM instead of prime game time?

Thanks for your reply and your reasoned tone. I stopped playing GW shortly after launch and only picked it up again several years later, so I wasn’t aware that in the early days, special events were complete surprises. Still, in later years they ran somewhat like clockwork, if the clockmaker occasionally indulged in a little tipple. ;-) People, right or wrong, will come to expect that kind of consistency, and at least for me, GW2 isn’t perceived as a completely new game, but as an extension of the old one, and old habits tell me things start at a certain time, dagnabbit! waves walker for emphasis XD
Nevertheless, I have already assumed the attitude of The Dude, and will abide, and hope that as time goes on, the game, communication, and event system will develop and get better. And maybe get a new rug. It’d really pull this room together.

So you all are going to argue that your idiots? If the “one time events” had times marked with pst that would not make sense at all that the “days” would be the same would it?
Ok, imagine ANet being in Honolulu und you being in NY. That makes about 5 hours time difference. Now imagine the schedule “Patch and start December 14th” with no time and no timezone given. “1st event December 15th, 3pm UTC-5”
It then turns out that the patch will be out at 11:59pm UTC-10, which makes it 4:59am UTC-5.
What would you think, hm?

Nobody has a problem with it launching on the 15th in the EU. We have a problem with Arenanet lying to us and telling us it was launching on the 14th.
Arenanet did not lie to you. They have always operated that their day starts and ends in PST/PDT.
It is clear that Arenanet can do a better job of advertising the date. But at this point whining about it is rather pointless.
Arenanet did not lie to you. They have always operated that their day starts and ends in PST/PDT.
Hm, apparently they didn’t make it clear to a large number of their non-PST/PDT customers.

I think thay have even said that at some time. any way im EST and I always asume its PST time just going by there past.

And if it comes after 9pm PST it will be the 15th in parts of America too. Stop complaining, get over it.
We will “get over it”, but we will still be disappointed. I think even you had your complaints every now and then, with events going slightly off plan.
Come on now guys. It’s the Holiday Season! Your gift from ArenaNet is coming soon, so relax a bit. No matter where you are ATM, the time in which it should have started has passed. Nothing complaining will do about it. Try finding something else to do for the time being. Do a dungeon or something, or for the EU guys, catch some shut-eye, the event is going anywhere.

The complaining won’t help NOW. But seeing that they’re repeating the same mistakes again and again, I just hope that they’ll someday learn from it and communicate better. Before AND afterwards.
It’s usually not a good idea for a company to give a start time anyway, since that just leads to massive stress on the login servers with everyone trying to get in at the same time.
As for my guess, I’d say around 11p.m. server time.

https://www.guildwars2.com/de/the-game/releases/december-2012/#schedule-of-events
see the above link THATS why the confusion started for EU players the 14th does not have pst or any other reference to time zones …. however the other events do have a pst reference,,,,,, so EU players thought the event would start on the day stated
all arena net needed to do was put (pst) next to the event starts on the 14th and no one would be moaning
I think one of the biggest worries right now with players, is the fact that they MIGHT be still working on it.
If they are still working on it now, that means it is not being tested and we are going to get a buggy patch that is going to be tested on us instead. This shouldn’t be something that is being “worked” on at the last minute. It should of been done and tested already and ready to go. Working on the patch at the last minute is unprofessional and shows they are not prepared. It looks bad when a patch is advertised as releasing on the 14th, yet it is still being worked on at the last minute, making it not release till a few minutes before the 15th (like the other events have been).
I feel that is the reason why most players are upset. That and the fact that there is a severe lack of communication about what is going on as the players just stew in wait for something they were expecting to be ready already. Instead of being “worked” on at the last minute.
Yesterday was the launch for Wintersday in GW1. There was a set time just as there has been since 2005.
For the first I can remember, they launched late.
If they are still working on it now, that means it is not being tested and we are going to get a buggy patch that is going to be tested on us instead.
No it doesn’t. If they are working it now, it doesn’t mean they haven’t worked on it/tested it before. The two things aren’t mutually exclusive.
If Anet gave an exact starting time, then the EU players would be complaining that it’s at an inconvenient time for them.. Remember? Ancient Karka? “Oh man that’s at 7 in the morning for me” “most of us will be at work or school by then” “oh man thats supper time” “unfair”. People will complain no matter what.

False, it was actually the NA players that were complaining about the ancient Karka event being done at Noon/2pm PST “In the middle of a Work day” “Out to get lunch”
Actually, the ancient Karka Event started here, in Scotland at either 7/8pm GMT thus a good time for the EU side & NA Side (As, if i am correct, that event was on a weekend?
I live in NZ and I always add one day to anything they put on their site in my head automatically.
They NEVER said it would launch on the 14th in my timezone and realistically, if you don’t live in the US you should stop expecting it to be in your own timezone.

I guess I shouldn’t generalize by saying the “EU people”. My bad. Maybe it was the aussies? My point is, still, that people will complain no matter what. It’s not like the NA servers are getting the content first.
So aggravating. I can understand an hour, two hours.. maybe three.. but an entire friggen day? COME ON. I have never once complained about the bugs because those happen and cant be controlled. This is just inexcusable.
The longer-term problem is that Arenanet is getting a reputation for being unprofessional.
I believe you are the liar. I have yet to see them act unprofessionally not have I seen an evidence they have. You on the other hand have a history of making false accusations and claims, while offering no proof of your claims. Which is unprofessional.
They have continually given us exact times of when content would be released (e.g. with Halloween, the Lost Shores and now with Wintersday) and then failed to meet those deadlines – often putting the content out at the last possible minute and failing to explain whats going on to their userbase. That is what said person meant by unprofessional – and it is based on observable fact.
so much QQ is pretty sad. I could understand if it was one time events being delayed a long time and thus messing with peoples ability to participate in ONE TIME ONLY Events, but thats NOT what is happeneing here. The only thing being delayed is the general festivities which will be available all the way until january 3rd. Some people just seriously need to realize theres more to life than GW2 lol.
I for one am glad its taking awhile to get it all implemented. Last time they launched events right off the bat they were lagged to all hell and so buggy most people couldn’t take part in 3/4 of the events anyways. Once they started taking their time to make sure things are working smoothly the events actually worked alright with far less lag and issues. I’d rather wait for an event that works than have one the doesn’t right away.
So sad what todays gaming community has become. All the crying over having to wait for something they are in no way entitled to to begin with is pretty sickening lol.
I’d like to say that I am really grateful to ArenaNet for the new content, and have no wish for the content to be released sooner in Europe than anywhere else (though maybe it’d be nice if event timezones favoured another continent for once). However, I may have changed my plans for this evening had I known that the new content was going to be launched on the 15th rather than the 14th. In future events I would be much happier if advertisements were made clearer so as to allow me to plan my time more effectively.
Thank you again to ArenaNet. Please do not take this as a complaint about this event, but rather as a request for future events.
EDIT: Having flicked through the other posts in this thread, I’d also ask that the posters accusing others of crying and moaning take the time to actually read and understand the complaint being made. As far as I can tell, no one is bothered by the delay, but rather the lack of clarity in the advertisement, which is an extremely easy fix for future events. Hostility towards other players is a fairly ironic way to encourage polite community behaviour.

The fact is however the 14th event launch was scheduled with no specific time other than “when it’s ready” and it’s still the 14th so no deadlines have been passed as of yet. All this QQ that it has is sorely misplaced.
Sorry, my calendar says 15th….and we’re back to square 1.
And your obviously not in the US PST Timezone on which all official times are based either then.
I’m aware of that and you got told it would be late in my link above. What’s your point?
We shouldn’t have to wait until after the promised launch time has already passed to be told that it won’t be honoured. The information on Arenanet’s official website should have been accurate in the first place.
It hasn’t been the promised launch time yet. In that link I posted, it was said that it would come out sometime during PST hours which would be the “new promised launch time.” Anet told us several hours ago that it would be late. Anyway, it’s not the 15th yet over here in the US. You’ll just have to wait.
Also, whoever reported my posts…………….seriously? Was the information I wrote that offensive because it’s not what you wanted to see? There may have been an insult here and there but it was nothing to report about.
Well its 5PM PT, must be some serious issues with the event/patch to have it not released by 5pm.
The longer-term problem is that Arenanet is getting a reputation for being unprofessional.

Maybe, I find it hard to believe they would announce the event in the 1st place if it wasn’t already ready. My guess is the delay is due to bug fixing. So you need to ask yourselves do you want it now and have a bunch of zeroday exploits and bugs or do you want it stable and working.
Most Europeans would be just happy if they deployed the patch about first thing in the morning PST. That’d make it what, 6 pm CET. We’d have the entire evening to play and Anet would have the entire work day to keep it smooth.
Sorry for the offtopic, but…
Yeah, no. No software shop does anything before 10am in their timezone, and that’s pushing it. It’s kind of amazing ANet deploys on a Friday; only game companies do that when they have any sort of user volume. And the last few minutes before I bit software push: a busy time.

As it is said again and again, nowhere on the offical european side it is stated that the patch is pst. Only the events are stated with both, pst and cet.

Thing we europeans are complaining is not that we get it on 15th. it is that they haven’t said that it would be.
And to add a little bit more. What do you think was first, your source or mine?
And again. Its about the Patch and not about the events which happen at 15th.

I really don’t see what’s the big issue here.
Some of us paid for this game. As a paying customer, I think I have a right to voice my concern on a forum kindly provided by the developers of the game. YOU may not be able to empathize enough to understand your fellow players’ frustrations, but just as you feel some of us should not be fussing about what you perceive as a small issue, some of us feel it is not your place to be telling us what we should or should not be doing.
@Carzor: That post was about 3 hours ago. However, it also says that it was said SEVERAL TIMES. Which means that there was more than one post about it. So, I’ll safely assume it was said when it was still December 14th for you guys. I’ll see if there’s an earlier thread and post it here although it probably has gotten deleted by now.
My guess is they probably are paid salary, so no OT pay. But to stay relevant in 7 hour’s i’ll start complaining, beside’s only thing i really wanted for today is the class balancing/ bug fixes.

Which was posted after the advertised time for the event had already passed, and after the misleading advertisements had been running on Arenanet’s official website for weeks. Since we seem to be going round in circles here, I’m off to Total War
Do you know difference between noun and adjective?
Yes. ‘Professional’ when used as an adjective means ‘having the qualities required of a professional [noun]’
Just for you: http://www.learnersdictionary.com/search/professional1
Out of interest, why have you posted a link which confirms exactly what I said? Are you agreeing with me now?
People keep saying this but apparently they either don’t know how to read said advertisements or their clocks/calendars. The advertised time HAS NOT passed yet…
The general festivities which are live until January 3rd start on December 14th (during PST hrs just like everything else) No SPECIFIC time posted on any advertisement anywhere.
Guess what? It’s still the 14th in the PST Timezone!
Well it’s very hard for thoose who are from Europe, it could’ve been done much easier by having a countdown timer for everyone in the’re own timezone.
As we speak for us in Europe and me from Norway here it’s 02:18 and the wintersday was suppose too start the 14 th and the Event the 15 th, kinda doesn’t fit right in and as told above, it actually is false advertising. Im a huge fan of Guild Wars 2 i don’t wish to pull the game down, but clearly i mean something needs to be done here in future for next time.
Cheers!
