My girlfriend and I were ready to buy the Quaggan minipet, until we found out it was random-luck.
I think Arenanet can make enough money without RNG because I know A LOT of people that would have bought it and don’t have because of this.

It’s likely I would actually spend something on grabbing the minipets, but I will not pay for a random chance of getting one.

I just want the permanent hair changing kit. I’m a woman, I like changing my character’s hair, this kit is so ideal for me. If they made it available in the gem store, for even 2000 gems, I’d buy it. >_<

You mean like the Self-Style Hair Kit that has been on Gem Store for 250gems for few weeks now? (under ‘Services’)

I’m among those that think A.net should be a little more upfront about the odds of getting something you want from the random boxes/chests/etc. (especially for the people who are just getting into the game now and won’t have the experience to fall back on), but on the whole you shouldn’t be buying it without recognizing the risks of RNG.

oh alright, i thought of it as permanent hair change, didn’t think about the actual item being permanent, which is an odd thought now that i think of it.. but then again i’m also quite tired.

My friend bought 4, he got the permanent hair kit from the first one.

…Then again, this is the same guy whose first ever drop was an abyss dye from a river drake in Queensdale.

I shouldn’t feel like it, but it’s stuff like this that makes me want to quit.

This is what makes RNG so demoralising and depressing. There will always be someone who gets the awesome reward for free, whereas most people will need to cheese-grater their faces off to get it. I doubt your friend feels proud or satisfied with getting these items for doing nothing.

This sort of mechnic works GREAT in Korea, where their culture is all about feeling superior than each other based on how lucky they are, or throwing $$$ at mystery boxes to cheat their way into winning.

It is absolutely out of place in a Western RPG, where we want to show off stuff that we EARNED, not that we win from RNG.

I throw away Black Lion Chests if I do not have a key handy. Even with the upgrade in items inside they are still not worth wasting the gems to buy keys.

I have purchased one set of ten of each of the special boxes that have come out but will not buy future surprise boxes. They just do not have a return rate that is enough to justify buying them.

Remember in BWE’s when keys dropped also, that would be nice to have back. Make it a rare drop at least. I like the BLC improvements, I really do. Now the chest have more value with the added items. My wife received a Small Guild Discovery and Mini Pack from two chests.

It would still be nice and help keep the crying down if keys also dropped like in BWE days. They don’t need to be as often as in BWE, again make it a rare drop or 1/2 as much as BLC’s.

I too have created a post of just how displeased I am with this RNG nonsense.

RNG = FAIL

Plz sell a 4-pack of minis

More or less. Halloween has been the only event I’ve enjoyed so far on the mini front as I was able to reasonably get all of them. Farming the karka event (when I was able to) gave nothing whatsoever, and I’m not shelling out an unknown amount of money trying to get all 4 this time around. My girlfriend bought 20 boxes and got two Infinirariums. While that is 1 mini per 10 boxes on average, I’d need $60 at least with those odds assuming the game gave me at least one of each of the three for myself to keep, and all extra going towards Foostivoo. That’s a pretty insane amount to expect for minipets in my opinion.

Has no one mentioned this?

Every event we see hundreds of people complaining that they spent $texas in the gem store on boxes, and then get upset about not getting anything stellar.

They then ask why Arenanet keeps doing this.

Why? Because every time they do it, you go into the gem store and spend $texas.

No more $texas = no more random gambling boxes.

Exactly. Unfortunately however, people are so desperate for whatever it is inside the box, they will just keep paying, and then moaning.

I bought one. Got a ticket to claim any wintersday skin I wanted and some junk. Still got a 500 gem value for 100 gems so it worked for me.

But you should know they’re a lotto when you use this. Don’t buy a lot with real money. It’s NOT really going to do any better then just getting one or two.

I’m more up in arms over doing math and realizing I’d have to spend $texas in order to even have a statistical shot of almost getting 1/4th of the only things I really care about from the event (miniatures). I’m not purchasing the boxes, just like I didn’t purchase the personalized Trick-or-Treat bags or the Consortium Chests.

I do enjoy the toy miniatures since I can get them by doing something concrete in the game, or failing that buy them directly for a known quantity of money (like you could for the Halloween miniatures, which I also bought). The Karka minis and golem/snowman/infinirarium/Foostivoos are a bit ridiculous and only reward people with deep pockets in essence.

No, you did not get ripped off. When you spent real world cash for the opportunity to open a sealed pretend box and find out what was inside, that is exactly what you got to do.

Yes, you did get ripped off. A-net should give decent prizes to people who actually spend money to open boxes.

No, you did not get ripped off. What you got was pretty much as valuable as what comes in the BL locked chests, and if you didn’t learn your lesson form those, it is your own fault.

Yes, you did get ripped off. A company should be ashamed to hold out the promise of wonderful prizes and then rig it so only 1 in 10,000 boxes are not junk.

Why does this remind me of the whole “Coffer of Whispers” buyers in GW1 complaining they weren’t worth it if you were after an Armbrace . . . or the mini . . . or some of the other items.

At the very least, these boxes don’t contain things which tangibly affect your game . . . you know, unless you sell them. (Like selling Armbraces, Mini Mallyx, Gemstone sets . . . )

I think the hardest thing is that people are trying to get something that already IS purely aesthetic. They want to have a cute mini. I sure do! They are willing to fork money for it. But to have no idea how much money it would mean to get one makes it hard to swallow. You can’t compare it to a lottery because you’re going for some money.

People are trying to go for something that’s account bound, it’s a cute little doll that has absolutely no impact on the game they just want to be able to say “Aww so cute!” and to have to roll boxes over and over and get totally screwed over because of the horrible lottery chances… how can you not expect people to be upset? Just let us buy the cosmetic things we want, it’s not breaking any game mechanics….

The past two events that had chests with horrible chances to get anything good should have stopped you from buying any this time.

These boxes are an improvement over the past events, such as they give you items you can actually use and are event related, but they still are a bad idea unless you are lucky.

That being said, I’m a little annoyed how they had to hide some of the minis in the box as a way to make people feel like they need to buy boxes. I am generally a collector in MMOs but I’ve had to drop that mindset for this game because I refuse to spend a ton of money on a chance.

I hope that eventually less people buy into this gambling system so that they start to look at other ways on how to generate revenue (allowing players to buy items out right for a decent price) that way everyone is happy.

These types of boxes are just thinly disguised lottery tickets. That’s it. The average return on each box is only a tiny portion of the cost, unless you luck out and get an item you can sell for a ton of gold or get that ultra-rare you are dying to acquire.

I’m done with them, but as long as there are people who will drop $100+ on stacks of these, they will keep selling them. These are for gambling addicts with deep wallets, nothing more.
