Opening the big packages is...
You certainly don’t get enough to justify it. That’s a lot of time and a lot of risk for what amounts to one extra gift box (or very very rarely two). In the same amount of time, at much lower risk, you could just keep rampaging around and getting them from random drops. I’ve pretty much given up on them; way, way overpowered to be put in areas where people mostly solo.
squishy cries squishy dies. had no problems with toy boxes. toughness ftw.

Are you a Skritt?
[CO] Cryptic Omen
Opening evening was farm fest, but I avoid the boxes at all costs now. Big fat time vacuum they are..
i was leveling my alt when i first came across these boxes, when being the same level as them i was just instantly destroyed if any range ones came out of the box.
I ended up ignoring them. Just not worth the hassle for such rubbish rewards.
I’m sorry you die. Tip however; Go loot your presents. Don’t fight. Loot and run, and you will be away with at least 75% hp.
Regards the glass cannon.
They are really tough. I can manage those up to level 60, but there is no way I would dare to open lvl 80 package alone.
There are places where you can leave them for the NPCs. The Champion Plains Wurm and its hatchlings do dispose of the toys at Blazeridge, but there are places where the released mayhem will just remain in ambush. So, please, if you are ‘just looting’ pick the places where you do not endanger the next passer by.
If you use a skill that gives stability, you can open the present without being knocked back. After using that skill, I either (i) loot the present and leave, or (ii) aoe the mobs while kiting them. They’re not difficult, only the mesmer toy mobs can be challenging when they perma-stun/confuse you.
I tend to open, grab the present and ruuuuuun. This worked every time so far for me without getting hit very hard (I’ve only done lvl 80 ones).
I like the grab and run advice! Thanks.
I still question the set up by Anet though…….why do this for what should be a fun event?
Those toys are deadly.
Killable? Well, yeah… Worth the effort? NO WAY.
Personally, I usually kill the skritt/soldiers, run from golems (chain stun is baaad) and especially dolls. Killing them takes a lot of time for no real benefit.
The grab & run strategy is fine, though I wish I could place some sort of “Warning: Rabid Dolls” map marker. Running into a pack someone else unleashed is no fun.
oh yes, please just grab and run to leave the mobs for the next poor person wanting to open the box. If you can’t deal with the contents don’t open ’em.

I fail to see the logic.
You can either 1) Kill the mobs, or 2) Run away.
If you are a Kill the mobs type player, you can certainly kill the mobs left over by someone else. If you’re a run away type player, you can just run through them to open the gift and spawn more and still run in and get the present and run away.
Cheers.

If ANet had used a bit of fore site and just made toys emerge based upon the players in said area (similar to DE’s) then I might actually bother with them. As it sits now, I ignore them, because opening them for the presents isn’t worth the possibility of killing a fellow adventurer that may happen upon the toys when I loot and run. As others have said they take to long for the rewards offered; then again most of the content seems to follow this rule. Hopefully this, as with all the latest content, will make ANet collect enough information to make future changes for the better.
On a side note the reason the doors in the open world (Halloween) were more fun (utilized) was due to the fact that they did follow the rule of DE’s. Meaning if more players were around the content got harder i.e. more spawns. Assuming that the players are in a group in order to open these little packages of death, alienates a good portion of your player base. Making only the best builds/players even bother with them and for the rewards not even them most times.

afaik they despawn after some time.
