Snowball Mayhem Feedback
I also enjoy the mode. I didn’t really enjoy the haloween ones because for some reason I never got rewards, even if they where cool looking and played nice. Here you get your gift boxes and bash people with snowballs in a nice looking snowy globe. So all around win I should say( though the nr6 ability on necros doesn’t work :P).
It’s pretty cool, I get the feeling of a real Snowball fight when doing it.
I didn’t like it at all. Spent most of the times just getting thrown back and forth. Too much crowd control is never fun. And I’ve done thousands of battlegrounds in Wow and I hate doing anything similar. That’s just me.
It was fun; but only running gifts or killing an enemy while he is atempting to run a gift grants points towards the corresponding event achievements. That’s pretty lame. I spent 1 hour playing. Both my progression bars are still at 0 despite winning almost every match.
Other than the pernicious effect the achievements are having on gameplay, it’s a really fun minigame.
I’m the best as a scout, but I had the most fun as a heavy gunner.
After getting all the achievements with an asura guardian (smallest size, dyed snowwhite, XD), I spent the rest of the time playing as a norn heavy(warrior, biggest size), /yelling quotes from TF2’s heavy.
That was a lot of fun.
I only missed a “Mmmm. Snowcone!” skill next to the Draw Rifle so the heavy could go “Om nom nom” to heal himself when he doesn’t have a weapon.
Imagine using that while under heavy fire, XD.
I like how my necro can’t use the number 6 skill, it’s really fun playing at a disadvantage.

Well, the ranger trap is pretty useless… to the point that I’m not sure that it even works. So, yeah.

Well at least you can ACTIVATE yours, ours literally says “This content is unavailable” when we try to use it.
Was okay. Most boring of all the activities and hardest to complete the achievements(because group needs to work together but everyone always running for his own achievements).
But I think we could use that as game mode in sPvP. With our main classes and skills(and hopefully people working better together then… depends on how the dailies are set – at the moment making everyone staying in one capture point to get their dailies when one person there would be enough).
And still need that other DotA-like mode from Halloween.
That’s pretty lame. I spent 1 hour playing. Both my progression bars are still at 0 despite winning almost every match.
This.
I’ve done it about 10 times so far, it’s generally fun. There are two things I don’t like about it. One they can’t do anything about.
First, the achievements are designed such that you end up having to work against your own team to complete them. Make the objectives if your “side” accomplishes those things, and greatly up the counts.
Second, and you can’t really do anything about this, but its sad to see people just leave when our side isn’t doing so well, or even throw in the ubiquitous “I’m playing with idiots” comment before you /rq. It’s a holiday event. . It’s not even terribly long. Happy Wintersday? /shrug
But I like the mechanic, and overall philosophy. It’s fun to pick a different “class” each time. I settled on support, helping package carriers back, but I’ll never get the achievement at this rate, and that’s fine. Would have been nicer if the rewards were team based.
Some issues with Snowball Mayhem:
- Stopper achievement requires that you let the enemy get the present (i.e., deliberately play badly), or encourages players to let their present-carrying teammates die so the enemy can pick it up and advance their own achievement. Not a nice mechanic at all.
- When I’m on the “red team” my teammates are wearing red, I’m wearing blue, the enemy is wearing blue, the enemy name is red, and my teammates’ name is blue. Make up your mind, already. Is it so hard to make the colours match? Add the fact that the game changes players to different teams after each match, and I spent the first 20 seconds of every round trying to figure out if I should kill the present carrier or help him. How about making the red team wear red and have red tags, and making the blue team wear blue and have blue tags? Failing that, make it so that every player sees his team as “blue” and the enemy team as “red”.
- Pretty much every class is useless compared to scout, especially heavy gunners. Gunners are slow, have no chance of catching up to other players, their weapons don’t have enough range, etc.. The shield is nice if the team is trying to hold the present spawn but, due to the “stopper” achievement, it’s generally preferable to let the enemy get the gift and then kill them, which makes scouts preferable. In fact, 3 or 4 scouts can stealth the present carrier until he’s out of rendering range of the enemy.
- The squad display doesn’t actually show the players in your squad. If you get far enough from your teammates, they disappear from the list, to the point of only your name being displayed (ex., if you’re chasing the present carrier to the enemy spawn and all your team is near your spawn).
- Knockdown duration is too long. A snowball enemy can basically keep you stunlocked from full HP until you die, because he can re-stun you before you even have a chance to dodge. Losing control of your character for 15 seconds is not fun gameplay; in fact, it’s not gameplay at all.
- A lot of the map is wasted. It would be nice if there were some floating platforms between the two spawns, for example, so that players have a risky but viable “shortcut” when they need to run from one spawn to the other to intercept the enemy present carrier.

I take it you missed the shortcut that’s already there.
The Unofficial NA Roleplaying Server!
I have to say, I was pleasantly surprised by how fun the Snowball game was. I am not usually someone who enjoys the PVP aspect of gw2, but the set-up was smart and allowed a greater player base to have fun, not just the hardcore PVPers. With the 3 different “classes” to choose from, there is enough variety without making it too complicated.
The one confusion I had was something a previous poster mentioned – the Red/Blue teams. Why not make the teams completely random colors, like yellow and purple, or some other combination. Any color but red would be helpful.
Overall, though – good job, very fun mini game.
There are several things I am getting frustrated with but this is not one of them. This snowball mayhem was really fun for me. I only wish we could have something snowy like this in wvw like wows arctic valley map.

If you are referring to the one that consists of one jump, it’s neither particularly risky nor particularly fast. And all the area below (the lake) is also virtually useless. The only thing there is an ability CD booster but it’s so far from the “action” that, by the time you’re near any relevant map objective, the booster has worn off.
Change the achievements so I can finish them and never come back to this POS.
This is really good stuff.

Also, no way to kick or report AFK players.

At first I was having problem figuring out what color team I’m in too. I’m sure most people also have that same problem. After a few games I notice there’s a background color in the party window.. If it’s red, you’re in the red team and blue for blue team.
I don’t understand why Necromancers can create wells to Chill you or why Mesmers can still create clones.
Also, no way to kick or report AFK players.
yeah, please give us the option to report afk players like in GW1 becouse i find my self leaving the game becouse of it. i cant play when i have 4 people AFK. for now im reporting them for booting becouse if enyone asks me thats booting, not doing enything and getting rewards. i hope they all get perma ban, or at least ban for wintersday becouse this is really kitten me off.
They are not doing something bannable. Lol. Instead of banning they should just make a 30 seconds timer to kick or something like that of not player input.
I want to be able to join this with my friends.
Didn’t like this event. Achievments are to difficult and counter productive to the overall team play. I hate PVP (my Opinion) but I am an achievment junkie (especially with the Holiday events) and I like being able to farm my achievments without messing up the teams chances to win and vice versa. Reapers rampage had a better achievment structure.
- Knockdown duration is too long. A snowball enemy can basically keep you stunlocked from full HP until you die, because he can re-stun you before you even have a chance to dodge. Losing control of your character for 15 seconds is not fun gameplay; in fact, it’s not gameplay at all.
hahaha i spent the other night being a snow ball, snowball rampage, oh it is great fun, or i just have really good cans :p arh did i finish you.
The whole premise is just fun for me, give a girl a chance.
I enjoyed Snowball Mayhem overall. The game itself is fun team based PvP which I enjoy.
I’m torn on the achievements, however. Gift Stopper is naturally co-operative (help your team bring down the enemy player carrying the gifts). Gift Bringer is naturally selfish (why cover your ally when it’s in your best interest to let them die so you can pick up the gift).
A quick solution would be to increase Gift Bringer and Gift Stopper max achievement level to 50. Then make any any enemy gift carrier kills by your team count towards the Gift Stopper Achievement. Finally change it so any gifts anyone on your team returns to your spawn counts towards the Gift Bringer Achievement.
This would make the achievements more team oriented, and I think improve the experience for everyone (both the Achievement hunter, and those playing Snowball Mayhem just for fun).

Well, it’s no Lunatic Inquisition. But it is still pretty fun.
I really do love these special pvp events. More would be appreciated.
the only thing that i found frustating (well maybe frustating is a bit too much since the game is quite fun ) is that health poll is based on your class while ability come from the game…
this mean that an ele or thief gunner have 10k hp while a wartrior or necro gunner have almost 18k :/ since the number 6 ability doesn’t do that much of a difference (for those that can actually use them… see necro) I think that a class independant health poll or a “special class” (as for scout, gunner, supporter and not actual character class outside the minigame) based health poll would be a little better ^^ running with the flag as a necro scout was much easier (regardless of the useless skill 6) than doing the same with scout ele ^^’ (almost half the health poll)
At first I was having problem figuring out what color team I’m in too. I’m sure most people also have that same problem. After a few games I notice there’s a background color in the party window.. If it’s red, you’re in the red team and blue for blue team.
Yes, but if you’re in the red team, members of your team (red) have their name in blue, and members of the enemy team (blue) have their name in red. It doesn’t make any sense.
If they want red to always mean “enemy” then make it so that every player see his own team as blue and the enemy team as red. Don’t call the enemy “the blue team” and then show their name in red…
I’ll be honest. I like GW1’s wintersday snowball PVP about 100x more.
There’s just a clumsy playstyle to this version that I’m not crazy about.
-Why having a starting point where you have to fall down? Lag often makes you take a faceplant animation (even if you didn’t fall that far on your computer) and be behind, which you have no control over.
-Why aren’t speed buffs abundant? It’s reallly slow and clunky to get around the map. That makes a ton of people likely to go scout and messes with team balance.
-Why is that downed skill with the ice patch immediately available? It’s super exploitable to cause a bunch of KDs… there should be a little bit of a a wind-up timer on it. I get that it could be funny… but it’s just too chaotic for people trying to play well IMO.
All in all, it’s a cool addition but sometimes painfully random results for people who want to play seriously.
They are not doing something bannable. Lol. Instead of banning they should just make a 30 seconds timer to kick or something like that of not player input.
yeah i agre thats why i said that what they had in GW1 was awsome, they got a debuff so they couldnt get into pvp for a certain amount of time, but untill that comes i really hope that they ban just for a while people that are going afk in pvp
Tbh playing this felt like it could be more fun & competitive than the current capture points :P. I’d love to see a pvp mode sort-of-kinda-like this, locked down teams ofc, etc.
Maybe I just miss GW1’s relic running and similiar modes, sigh*
I love this event, it’s really fun! Once you start getting the hang of it, it is hard to stop playing. Haha, I really hope this mini team game can be a permanent feature. Maybe let it open for play during weekends or something like that.

.
I actually like playing the heavy gunner and support more.
Heavy gunner is probably the most powerful, and can kill the fastest with the “2” skill. “3” to jump near your enemy then “2” to melt their health. “4” for knockdown.
Support is great as well, had so much fun with this class. Making your opponents falling around with your ice patch, then turning into a huge snowball and knock them about. You can protect, heal the gift carrier as well. Probably the funnest class to play, with lots of “rofl” moments.
I didn’t have any fun with the Snowball Mayhem.
The idea of having a ‘capture the flag’ mini-game sounded fun. I had a blast with the Lunatic court.
But then, oh jeez…
1- It’s a real zerg/chaotic fest. I got knocked down from left to right (it’s Orr v2 lol) without understanding what the hell was going on.
2- The achievements kill the game. I played around 10 games and I’m still at 2 for stoppers and 1 for bringer. The games end before I can give any attempts.
3- Because of ^ this, few to no people helped me when I had the gift in order to be the ones to pick it up at my death. No team work at all. The amount of time I died at the gate of my base with the gift only to see a random folk pick it up and make it to the end is frustrating. I’m not rewarded for helping others and they aren’t, why should we bother?
Having achievements in minigames kill the minigames. It’s a shame though, because I completed every other activities from Wintersdays so far but I had so much a bad experience with Snowball I don’t think I’ll play it again, well not until late in the event, since lot of players play for the achievements.
(edited by NickChabby.8907)
The achievements should be teamed based. As it stands now, I’m not going to be able to do the jump puzzle or these two. That pins all my hopes on the Toypacotacowhatever thing. If those end up being difficult, then I’ll be at 11/12, and really frustrated.
They need one that’s like “login”. That’s it, login, and you get one.
How about putting random achievements ‘in’ the presents for the snowball fight?
Its pretty terrible, the classes aren’t fun, getting knocked around constantly is very annoying, the achievements are awful and encourage bad teamplay.
The afk problem is a really huge deal. I played for about an hour today and witnessed a single player afk for that entire time. Whichever team had him on it was almost guaranteed to lose because they couldn’t hold the central area and then more people would quit. Banning isn’t the right solution but certainly the option to kick players who are inactive/score no points. And then hopefully banning them from the PvP. Honestly, it’s like leeching a dungeon, and it really gets on my nerves.
I would like to see this mini-game as a constat adition to gw2. It was really fun, would be nice to play this in a more relaxed atmosfere without stupid achievements ruining gameplay.
Good job on the map, ArenaNet! I was positively surprised it’s pretty much a remake of the one in GW1. GW2 needs more recognizable areas like this! (Hint: Remake some of the guild halls. Don’t drown Shing Jea Monastery.. just make Cantha more recognizable than Tyria, please.)
Dwayna Vs Grenth was more fun than this, imo. Especially because titles are so pointless in GW2, not to mention achievements.
Great job on the map, but extremely hard to get achiements.
Criticism: People drop the present so you can’t get an achievment. Give somebody a chance to show what scumbags they are, and they willingly deliver.
Still at 3/5 for both after hours of play.
I have to say, I enjoyed it altogether.
I agree with the statements about the gift stopper achievement essentially rewarding bad play… why is that? I did it.
I needed the achievement so I simply camped near their base and let my teammates be overrun and then nabbed the guy (with scout or the snowball of course).
Other problem? The snowball is unstoppable in the hands of any decent player. You can stunlock someone from full hp to 0 and if they stand next to each other get both players downed completely.
Even with these issues, it was a fairly fun event. Please don’t bother with balancing it as it goes away soon. Increase the drop rates for tonics or choir bell or implement a way to normalize the rng so that success rates become more regular.
Currently if you open 500 chests it doesn’t help any more than 2. Focus on this stuff instead.

It’ll make this place ignite!

Yeah. It is intense!
The only achievement that works is hard, EVERYONE wants to get the gift.
It should be BY THE TEAM!
Team achievements, Win a Snowball Mayhem, Get your team to deliver Gifts and the Stop one, should be only letting the gift fall.
I really hope the two achievements acquired in this aren’t required for the Meta.
“Help your team, and don’t get the achievement” awesome idea!
EDIT: oh, and people are letting the ‘flag’ carrier die so they can pick up the ‘flag’ and get the Gift Bringer achievement.
How did ArenaNet NOT know this would happen. -_-’
(edited by illutian.7630)
Easily my favorite part of the event. Well done!
Agree however that the achievements weren’t really great. Should have been for team wins or something,
When are people going to figure out there’s a war going on?
Oddly enough for someone that really doesn’t PvP, I had a great time with this event. I even got all my achievements for this one done which is more than I can say for Toypocalypse. Also, most of the many gifts I’ve received this festival came from playing this game. They really added up fast.
