It really feels like Anet will take whatever their MOST popular item will be and then turn it into a horrible cash-grab RNG chest.
IE: The Scythe was by far the most sought after skin and was RNG only.
Wintersday they made the lovable zomg quaggan RNG.
I have a feeling this pattern is going to repeat.

I’m not buying gems during any holiday event again until they stop doing this nonsense. Everything should have a price that I can get directly from the gem store.

I think this is a fair/affordable solution that I’d love to hear feedback on:
Offer CHEAPER random chests (with current droprate, maybe?), and more expensive for-sure gem buys. Everybody wins. Make a stack of RNG chests of 5 or 10 the same as 1 direct purchase of something. I think that would be fair. They need to stop RNG’ing the most popular item. It feels really underhanded.

This way, I could trade in my gold for gems to gamble a bit on 5-10 chests and see if I could luck out and get 2-3 minipets for the quaggan. And if I don’t, no big deal and no love lost. But if I want to for-sure get that quaggan, I spend the 20$ outright, or trade the massive amount of gold-to-gems needed. What do you all think?

I think ‘popular’ items SHOULD be hard to get.

Allowing people the ability to buy these hard-to-get items through the gem store directly means that they would be favouring people with money to spend over those who just want to use gold. This in turn discourages playing the game over just spending real money, producing a ‘buy-to-have-the-popular-things’ mentality instead of ‘try-to-get-through-gaming’.

You have a 3-pointed triangle. Most popular (Popularity), Cheap (Cost) and Fast (Speed). Favouring one point, will increase the distance from the others.

The popularity of the item is high so in normal cases, the cost will increase and the time taken will also increase.

If you want to get it quick, the TP is there, but it’s more expensive.
If you want to reduce costs then there is the RNG, which will take a much, much, much, much longer.

The place where people get hurt is when they increase their costs by buying gems and chests to play the RNG and lose. However, this is a slim chance of getting a shortcut and people feel entitled to something for their money. So this method should be avoided and treated like a lottery.

So as it is, I think this is right. Some people will make do with the other stuff that is available for cheaper or less effort. This issue isn’t entirely game-breaking than heart-breaking(for those who use the RNG expecting it.)

Maybe it’s their original plan to only have a few of this items in circulation to increase the prestigious status of them. But it will be bad to have that prestigious status available for purchase with gems.

It’s a holiday vanity item. You shouldn’t punish people without money and people without in-game money alike. If you don’t have either, then there are other free gaming alternatives you can get.

Make it affordable for most people instead of nobody.

One-time items are not an OK thing to RNG the hell out of; holiday items were always readily available to farm and purchase without this sort of nonsense in GW1.

Your arguments aren’t really valid, because I’m talking more about the non-tradeable, Gems-only, RNG-only minipets. There’s no “gameplay” way to get it, nor is there a TP way to get it.

I’m not saying EVERYTHING should be buyable. But everything should be obtainable somehow. Even if the quaggan you can’t buy, but have to craft. As long as we could buy a minipet pack, that wouldn’t be a problem.

If the mini-pets werent in the cash shop, then they would be drops so rare that most people would never see or get one.

You mentioned getting things in GW1, well that’s how GW1 worked. Got to bring up the Jingle Bear Mini in a thread earlier where someone was raging about a holiday item (unbreakable bell) having a ridiculously low drop rate and that GW was much better. But GW was the exact same thing.

Because of how popular the Mini Quaggan is, it would probably have a rarity along the lines of Chibi Gwen, or the Jingle Bear, or Evennia, or Dhuum. People farmed for those minis for years before getting one, if they ever did. Why did most of them do it? Because of the rarity. Make them available to anyone and they suddenly become junk.

Being in the cash shop (as much as I have issue with that also) gives you a better chance of actually getting the thing than you would ever have if they made it a drop. As for holiday minis, if you didn’t get it before the holiday then tough luck. You have a whole year to wait for another chance.

In the case of Celestial Minis, or promotional minis, if you missed it, then it was gone forever. You couldn’t just farm for a Celestial rabbit, or make another character and wait for a birthday to roll around.

Players toss all over this forums “I wish it were more like GW”, but don’t realize if it was, then they would be even more upset due to this wide spread idea that everyone is entitled to everything. “It’s not fair, I couldn’t play for the three days of the event and now can never get that mini” , “It’s not fair, I farmed 3000 presents and didn’t get the thing and my friend got it in five” , “It’s not fair for the people that bought the game after the event that can never get it”, “I don’t subscribe to that magazine, so I couldn’t get a code”… Ad-nauseam.

Giving an in-game way to get them would just cause a different kind of grief from players (see unbreakable bell thread, or countless other gift QQ threads). If the developers have no way to win to begin with, they might as well go the route that makes them a little money.

The difference is GW1 kept its biggest rare RNG items to minis and weapon skins.

GW2 already has two account features locked into rare exclusive RNG.

1. The ability to play music without worrying about using it so much that you’ll lose that ability
2. The ability to change hairstyles for free without burdening a significant little chunk of your gear savings every time

If the mini-pets werent in the cash shop, then they would be drops so rare that most people would never see or get one.

They also wouldn’t be account-bound. As it stands now, there IS no “farm up the gold and buy it on the TP.” All the Wintersday minis are account-bound.
