What is this thread for?
This thread is for the discussion and feedback for the Toypocalypse event for Wintersday 2012. Please keep the discussion constructive, informative, and helpful to those new players looking for some info on understanding this new event.

My feedback for the event.
Overall the concept is fun and amazing, however I feel that the event’s fun factor relies heavily on the team you are set with. If your team is competent and understands the mechanics behind the event, you will have fun. If you are stuck with a team that fails to understand the mechanics, you are going to have a not-so-fun-time.

My Guide for the Toypocalypse Canceled Achievement.

Hopefully this can help someone out, and we can give some good feedback to the ArenaNet team! Happy Wintersday!

Toypocalypse was a load of fun after I got a group that was able to pull it off. It wasn’t hard to get the achievement once our group got going, either.

It wasn’t very fun instance-hopping 23 times to get there, though.

I feel like being able to team up with your party or guildies should’ve been part of the design of the event. It’s understandable for Snowball Mayhem since it’s a PvP activity and it’s not a problem for Bell Choir (though it’d have been nice anyway) since it’s a solo activity, but this is a coordinated team effort – not unlike a dungeon – and while the ability to PuG should be there, so should the ability to play it with your friends.

I feel like the reward for completing it with all yaks alive (besides the achievement) was underwhelming. If ANet is going to make the achievement easier, perhaps increasing the number of gifts you get for each dolyak alive would keep things interesting? Also, I feel like points shouldn’t be awarded for just weapon kills – building siege should give points and recruiting skritt mercenaries should, too. That way even as people compete against each other they’re still helping each other get things done and making good use of everything around the map.

Lastly perhaps the big present should spawn closer to the yaks or be delivered automatically whenever the gift was opened – as it was anyone who was actually helping (building siege, for instance) couldn’t help themselves to the gifts, which seems odd.

tl;dr I had fun when I got a coordinated group but I feel like this was the poorest Wintersday activity in terms of planning.

Idk about “Toypocalypse Canceled” being underwhelming, there are some people with little amounts of time (why they are playing an mmorpg I have no idea haha) , so a reachable achievement seems fair.

However, the more hardcore player would think that’s boring and would want a real challenge in game, much like the Mad King’s Clock Tower. But when they did give a real challenge there was a massive amount of negative feedback from players who were unable to beat it.

TL;DR
I think they made a good decision on making holiday achievements easy because people get upset when they cant gain them, although I’d like a hard challenge for holidays.

You can do toypocalypse with a reasonably active group provided that you pay attention to what they are doing and fill in the gaps.

Rifle: Shoot toys that make it through your defenses, kill Toxx.

Pistol: Stun Ventari (primary priority), scare melee off dolyaks, mind control and clone groups outside aggro range to delay them while they get killed by catapults.

Candy Cane: smash and grab siege supply from structures and remove defiant from Toxx.

Notes for siege equipment:

Siege can actually be placed on top of ice walls. This is the most important tip as it provides line of sight for the siege and makes them invincible to the majority of attacking mobs (except ventari, which pistolers should watch out for and stun repeatedly).

Upgrading ice walls also reorients them, so be careful not to make one useless by upgrading it from a weird angle.

Some destroyable structures refresh on each wave, so there is no need to go to the corners of the map to save siege resources. Hammer gatherers should just hit everything they come across since siege equipment never despawns.

Place forward siege in areas where the enemies will obviously have pathing troubles, like the maze. Don’t bother upgrading them.

Basic wave strategy:

Your priority for the first wave should be to set up a respectable number of ballistas near the dolyaks, preferably on top of ice walls spanning between each of the toy production pipes. Focus on making the ballistas more than the walls. You can put catapults on the ledges near the center pipe, but it is again preferable to put them on ice walls you have available. Watch to make sure there is enough headroom where you put catapults so the snowballs don’t hit the ceiling. On early waves, favor putting down more ballistas rather than upgrading, since dividing the weak enemy force makes destruction of siege very unlikely, and you get to repair them to full anyway.

Snowmen should be built somewhere more peripheral where at least 2 ballistas are watching – but again, the priority is building walls where you can put siege. Place more walls around the dolyaks with less health and more siege around the dolyaks with more health, as toys will try to do some pathing around walls before giving up and just attacking the nearest one.

On later waves, you may want to consider putting down a peripheral wall and laying a catapult and ballista on top of it. The dolyak line siege should be upgraded where applicable, and snowmen should be placed and upgraded well in front of your most copious and expensive siege to protect your investments.

When Toxx arrives, if you really have a vulnerable setup, have a candy cane and rifle player wear down the stacks and push Toxx away from the dolyaks. Toxx should then aggro a player who can keep her busy while everyone else fortifies. You can build siege where you’re kiting toxx to help you survive and make the fight go faster.

I feel like being able to team up with your party or guildies should’ve been part of the design of the event.

Fully agree. I have no idea why Anet opted for the method they employed for this event. It would be 10x more fun to do it with Guild mates you can communicate with through voice communication.

Not entirely true. I can’t fill in all the gaps if people are doing nothing other than shooting toys. I’ve had this countless times. Trying to get people to even build catapults is a big enough job let alone trying to get them to build some walls.

I agree, but hey, they gotta learn to be better next time right?

Just tell them to break kitten, and make snowman/catapults on the same spot they pick it up. By the 3rd round, there will be so many of them all toys will aggro to them. Only upgrade them if they need repairs. When Toxx comes out, everyone grab rifles and shoot him, he won’t get close to the donkeys because he will attack all the dozens and dozens of snowmen/catapults attacking him. By the 3rd round or so, you can heal your donkeys with the hay. (They will probably take damage at the start as you start breaking ton of stuff and building them on the same spot.)
