So, during the Black Friday sale, I went ahead and spent the $20 or so on gems in order to pick up the Black Lion key bundle. I figured, like the first event, you would have a chance at finding event items in the chest, so I might as well stock up on some keys while the price was discounted, see if I could roll a Wintersday weapon skin or something when the event began.
I’m looking at the Wintersday update right now, though (https://www.guildwars2.com/en/the-game/releases/december-2012/) and it doesn’t say anything about BL chests. Instead, it says, “With festive town clothes, wintery weapon skins, and chests full of holiday treasures, The Black Lion Trading Company has everything you need to celebrate Wintersday! Check out the new items and much more in the Gem Store today!”
Did I screw the pooch by spending my gems on BL keys (when I should have saved the gems to buy a skin direct, or one of the Wintersday chests), or will there be a chance to get Event skins from the Black Lion chests during the event, like before?
As much as I hate them, they will probably have chests, just like the Halloween ones (possibly Lost Shores type chests, but probably less likely). I just really hope that stuff isn’t only available in the chests (ala LS minis, or the cool Halloween skins (scythe/GS chainsword)).
But right now, its anyone’s guess. It could go either way, you need the keys again, or you just buy the chest straight from the BLTC.

I’m assuming this is going to be the Black Lion Chests, if not then I guess it will be something like the Consotrium chests. On the bright side, there will be plenty of other things to spend your gems on, hopefully minipets!
They’ll probably do like they did with Halloween and have some (insanely expensive) craftable items as well as items in the chest.
I’d imagine chests will be more similar to the Lost Shores chests… Seeing all the complaints from the Halloween event. (And they created the Mad King’s Chest in response to those complaints.)
They may also sell “presents” (like the personalized trick-or-treat bags) for cheaper than chests.

That’s my dilemma – I’m assuming they’re referring to the Consortium-type chests, but I’m not sure. I’m hoping that holiday items will also be in Black Lion chests, as I already went ahead and blew the gems on Black Lion keys, anticipating that’s where you’d get the items, as opposed to separate chests on sale in the store.
From the description, it sounds like there will be costumes and other festival stuff available directly for sale in the Gem Store, and then a special Wintersday chest similar to the Consortium chest. The BLC’s may get a makeover, but it could go either way at this point.
I’d be willing to bet my gold that the chests will be unique from the blc just like the consortium chests. There was way too much of an uproar with the blc and lost shores consortium chests were ANet attempting to correct an upset community. If you look at the consortium chests they took a lot of community feedback (for example including at least one new skin in every chest, with a small chance at a rarer item).
I wouldn’t be surprised if they never did the hallowen type chests again to be honest.

Haha yeah I know what you mean. I’m not really saying which method I like better, i honestly dont really care either way i will buy a few and take what i get, only that the black lion chests caused a huge kittentorm for the poor employees to deal with. :P
Pleeeeeaaaaase no chests :S I mean they can bring them if people have fun with them. But I really appreciate to know in advance what i’m buying and I don’t like boxes that might or might not contain something I like.
I don’t like the idea of chests at all, unless they are used in such a way: Holiday Weapon Chest, (X amount of gems here), contains 1 consumable weapon of each type of weapon. That way everyone has a chance to buy all the skins from the chests, and most likely prevent a spike in holiday item prices after the event. They should also allow chests with 1 skin or just the skins themselves drop from monsters/events. It’s all about equality and everyone getting their holiday tribute.

I just assume that something like Consortium Chests is what they will be doing going forward, unless they come up with some better way to prey upon degenerate gamblers.
To be fair, I guess another good argument for them not using Black Lion Chests is that by putting the stuff in Black Lion Chests, it makes opening Black Lion Chests at any other time a bad idea. I know I was kind of annoyed that I had ever opened any chests when they announced they were going to put Halloween stuff in them.

I’m fine whether the BLC have wintersday items or not, but I am just dying to use all these keys… ahh!! And whether or not wintersday items are a possible gift inside may affect how many keys I hold on to for the future vs. use now.

I still don’t have an official answer but if you read the patch notes carefully it tends to lean heavily towards saying BL chests do not contain wintersday items.
The notes specifically talk about the special new wintersday chests and what’s inside them. It also talks about how these can be obtained alternatively through direct gem purchase.
On the other hand, they specifically talk about the BLC overhaul and the new items that can be obtained from them.
Of course this still isn’t official, but with no mention whatsoever of any similar items between the two, I think it’s safe to say the BLC so far don’t contain wintersday items.

That’s mighty strange seeing as since beta to date I have only received 2 keys and both were from map completions. I was of the opinion that drops was not possible? If they are then plz do share where they drop from!

Did a small test with around 7 keys and got nothing event related. However, like the patch notes said, the drops have been updated. For example I got few guild influence items amongst other regular things.
And I personally doubt the Black Lion Chests are dropping anything Wintersday related as we already have the separate wintersday gifts available on the gem store.
I’m assuming dev silence means no holiday items in the BLC chests, as they don’t want to create another uproar. Still, if so, that’s pretty lame. I bought the 25 key bundle when it went on sale specifically for the next holiday event. If I’d known they were taking holiday items out of the chests, and switching to consortium style only, I would have saved the gems for that. Which, clearly, is frustrating.
Anyway, whatever. I guess I’ll go ahead and blow through my key stack and post the results here. I’ll let you folks know if anything (or nothing) holiday drops.
If they truly are no longer putting holiday items in BL chests, then I guess there’s no point in saving keys anymore anyway…
Nothing of real note (none of the permanent items, sadly), and definitely no holiday items, so I suppose that probably answers that. With key drops, ended up opening about 30, which seems like a reasonable sample size. Bummer.
I think that “chests full of holiday treasures” doesn’t mean black lion chests, but other “chests” like mystery box or those added in the gem store for the event. The title of the post also is “New Wintersday Items in the GEM STORE”, and “Check out the new items and much more in the GEM STORE”. So i think that they will not add a black lion chest drop
