Q:

As usual, all communities have needs, a DPS meter is one of those needs in GW2, so we can improve our groups and ourselves, but, theres always the eternal question of “Is this app legal?”, this question lead us to the confusion and to avoid all softwares of this nature.

So, in other words, we need your permission to test and develop this kind of programs.

Testing and developing programs like this will help with the experience in game <3

Im leaving this link, so you can check what is all about and what is your state about this

A:

We have a policy where we explain that we do not review, evaluate, analyze, or approve third-party programs. Nor do we do analysis that leads to our calling out Program XYZ as malware or against the CToU.

There are a lot of reasons for this policy, but it comes down to team bandwidth. If a dev is reviewing third-party programs — and it actually would take many devs to keep up with the load — that dev/those devs are not developing Guild Wars 2. We’d rather they focus on Guild Wars 2.

We therefore cannot speak to this program as far as its legitimacy. Each player is asked to review the policy about third-party programs and decide on an individual basis whether to use any of those that are offered.

1) Yes, it’s legal. It’s doesn’t mod the game in any way.

2) Why did you post this in Community Creations? You’re going to probably get a response from the devs if you posted this in General Discussion or what have you. Community Creations is for fan-made videos, stories, art, and music. Anything else needs to be posted elsewhere.

I agree with AegisRunestone. Also, a dps meter is not a need; it’s a want, and it’s not one that all GW2 players have. I for one don’t need or want to know my dps.

In other words, it’s legal until they say it’s illegal and ban your account.

Anet’s policy is too vague and yet they keep telling us to use it and claim we ourselves should decide if an app meets it’s vague requirements.

Which is ridiculous, what happens if one player thinks an app is legal, and another thinks it is not?! It give one player an advantage until enough players complain about it and Anet finally decide if it is illegal, and then all those who used it get banned!

Weak policies, and weak answers from anet as usual!

Complained about WvW before it became cool.
I used to be a PvE player like you, then I played Guild Wars 2

Since there is already a red post I doubt this will be read but anyhow:

As I see it, it really comes down to whether you trust the developers of the tool, any tool for that matter, or not. If the functionality is as claimed, you could screen capiture, e. g. with OBS or Fraps, and let the tool run on the playback of said video.
This would mean it is not interacting with the game what so ever, but I can understand that Arenanet can’t evaluate if this is true or not. Especially if the tool is changing a lot with new versions.
Arenanet can’t approve of any tools, understandably, as I stated, but they could approve of the methodology (or disapprove) and I wish they did.

If the tool is doing what it claims it does, is another matter. You could check the source code yourself and compile it but not everybody is able to do that and the compiled version could still use “illegal” means. It really comes down to trust in the tool developers.

Still, if Arenanet approves of the technique used, it would be great.

First of all Thank you Gaile for giving a response. Even though there is still no good clarification it is always nice to get some response!

This Topic is important to me and many others. I do understand why you can’t approve 3rd Party Programs. Once down the Path you’d had to spent resources on many different ones not just one.

Reading your reposted Thread regarding the 3rd Party Software Policy it is still vague to decide where it belongs. I do believe personally, as many others that the Tool linked at the top is not infringing the ToS. However there is still a large amount of people being not too sure and can’t make a proper decision based on the vague lines provided.

I like the idea syphdias.5467 wrote. Is there any chance that you could approve confirm the method? The tool does take screenshots and search for predefines pixel patterns.

Without looking at the code, or checking if this or any other Application would do that could we get an approval on something like that? “Yes if a program would only take screenshots and search for pixels that would not be a problem”

Again, i have my own opinion and i would clearly say yes it is okay. But a response from an admin is more important. Thank you again for saying something regarding that topic.
