noooooooooooooooooooooo
Wouldn’t you want them to turn the servers off?
I’ll turn off lights, sure. But not my monitor, PC tower and modem. I can manage without anything else.
Its going to be expensive to buy enough monitors to light up the house
My electronics use much more power than my lighting ever will, and i’m not turning those off.
This tells exactly how much “green” people give stuff any thought. So let me put this into perspective.
Your lighting, if you still use old-fashioned light bulbs (which you shouldn’t), will use 40-120W per room you have lit. If you’re sitting at your computer you could safely turn off some of the lights and go with just one bulb for 40W consumption. If you’re a bit more energy-conscious and are using fluorescent or LED bulbs the consumption drops to less than 10W.
Now then let’s go to your computer. You’re probably playing the game on a gaming desktop and playing GW2 it will be running almost at full throttle most of the time. If you have a midrange PC it will probably then be drawing somewhere between 300-400W from the wall. Add on top your monitors, which add another 30-50W depending on your setup (I’m giving you the benefit of the doubt that you’re not using a CRT monitor anymore).
The end result is, if you turn off your computer for that hour, you can burn all 20 LED bulbs in your hourse and still be spending less than half of the power you would be using with all your lights off and your computer on.
Want to be green? Turn off your PC for an hour.

Golem rush hour inc.
This isnt only to be ’’green’’. Its also that humanity go togheter and DO something for our planet. Like on birthdays or christmas, it isnt the value of the presents that counts, its the thougth behind it.

March 28, hundreds of millions of peoples, 7000+ cities and 150+ countries gonna turn of their lights for one hour. Would be fun if you also would join in.
And devs, would be cool if you could do some kind of event. To turn of all lights in Tyria would probably be too much programming but maybe turn of the lights somewhere in LA and have some NPC’s telling players about Earth Hour.
I plan on turning everything off. As others have said, its not much but its the least that one can do. Participating in a social movement of this nature is all about raising awareness for a critical issue which will hopefully, in whatever small way, might help influence people to adopt a more socially responsible life style.
Unfortunately, a lot of people don’t care about this issue (ignorance is bliss), so I image there will still be a lot of people playing in-game. Given this, I think having an in-game event would be a great idea. Perhaps the ambient lighting could be reduced on all the maps to create a sense of darkness to reflect the symbolic gesture of turning out the lights in the real world. Anyways, just thought I would “second” your suggestion for an in-game “event” in support of Earth Hour.

Actually I hate to be the one to correct you but your calculation on the computer side of things is incorrect.
I myself work as the Head of IT for the company Whale Coast Conservation and your computer does not draw that much.
Granted though your whole proposal is sound in principal that people should actually turn off everything for an hour if they wanted to make some sort of impact you fail to grasp the reason for Earth Hour.
Its not for the immediate impact, it is to bring ‘awareness’ to the fact that we have a large detrimental effect on the planet. It is not actually about turning off lights at all Here in Hermanus we don’t even bother with the lights thing, we actually organise a event to celebrate Earth Hour and to educate more people on the principal of the event.
Just to get back to the computer, one of the best gaming rigs a friend of mine has which is a power junky is 350W MAX on GW2 and BF4.
The normal ‘gaming computer’ actually maxes out at 250W Interesting hey considering we buy such HUGE power supplies to power something which even in peek does not use half of the PSU.
Anyway the reason I know this is because we tested the whole household due to going off-grid and all we need to know the exact draw of all 6 of our computers and other equipment.
Hope that helps!
Best Regards
