I want to start a friendly discussion on the idea of an expansion to GW2.

As far as we know ArenaNet has no plans for an expansion and hopes to replace expansions with the Living Story. The LS progresses the story of the game and in the first season added temporary content in the form of a couple dungeons, some mini games and events, some that stuck and many that left as soon as the LS installment ended. The first season also gave us one new map. Season 2 just started and we’ll just have to wait and see what happens but as it stands now, after 2 years, the core game has not grown really at all. I believe strongly that ANet CAN bring everything that an expansion would bring through the LS, but if that is what they are going to do ultimately.. they will have to step it up a lot in what the episodes bring to the game as far as content.

With that said, I think ANet should do an expansion. An expansion could expand the world of the game, hopefully introduce another class and perhaps another playable race, new dungeons and just a lot more content. The LS can do this too, but much slower IMO. An expansion would also make news on gaming websites and probably bring a lot more new and pre-existing players to the game. It would also bring in revenue for the game and company which is key to the success of this game. Personally I would be more than willing to pay for an expansion, especially if it meant supporting the company and the game and adding new content. And I think most of the community would feel the same.

Adding an expansion could have some negative effects as well. One being that opening up a large new mass of the map could cause a lot of the current maps to become less populated. BUT, with the megaserver and new players I think this wont be that much of a problem. ANet could do a lot to prevent this anyways just by adding new features to the game that promote returning to existing content. For example adding Orders (priory, vigil, whispers) missions that promote existing content or adding unique skins from specific content such as dungeons and world bosses could encourage players to spread out throughout all of the world.

Here is a video that inspired me to make this post. It says a lot of what I said and a lot more:

The number of threads already talking about this are not enough for you?

As far as we know Anet hasn’t decided a delivery platform for an expansion. That’s different than what you’re saying.

If you have nothing to add to the conversation I’m trying to start, you could have just as easily said nothing at all or not even have clicked on the title. And perhaps if the search function on the forum worked properly I might be able to find a pre-existing post without scouring a ton of forum pages.

On the other hand… with the way the game is currently set up, adding an expansion would have a very strange effect with the LS. The story would obviously expand into the new areas of the game opened up by the expansion and players that haven’t purchased the expansion would not be able to be a part of this. I suppose they would still unlock the episode… and that is kinda the nature of an expansion so.. but an interesting consideration that I’m sure ANet has thought of.

also @Papryk, buying gems is the only way of supporting the game and ANet. If you stop buying gems the game would eventually be in danger, possibly to the point that they can’t even make and expansion.

Since many other threads have what you want go to them and post. That is my worthwhile contribution to your amazing and original OP.

I fully agree, and also would happily pay for an expansion pack, as would my other-half, and my friends.
