I think Anet has a lot of really good ideas, but are just implementing them very badly.
Exotics were supposed to be incredibly difficult to get? Really?
I think they were expecting people to go about and get cosmetics like they did in GW1, but it turned out that a huge chunk of people didn;t give a fart about what they looked like and just cared about their stats and thus complained they had nothing to do.

I think, as WP said, that ANet wasn’t expecting the amount of sheer determination of the players had when the game started. I heard one player actually got to level 80 in 3 days with the help of his guild and friends, which would have allowed him to make Exotics almost immediately. One of many miscalculations on their part, on their part, but still one that would have been impossible to see before hand.

And then after one bad implementation they swear off everything even remotely connected with the idea no matter how good it was.
Just look at the events system improvements (or complete lack thereof) after the failure that was the Modus Sceleris. Once ANet tries something, if it doesn’t go perfectly, they seem to abandon it forever no matter how much the players want it. And the modus sceleris addition went terribly, but it was entirely ANets fault, and didn’t damper the players desire for an expansion of the event system at all.
More people were excited for expansions on the event system than have ever been for the LS, yet we keep getting living story simply because the first one didn’t completely bomb while much better ideas were doomed from their first implementation.

It’s not just Arena.net. Game developers as a general rule don’t “tweak” things. If fan feedback says “we hate this”, it’s pretty much discarded whole hog. Gamers generally aren’t ones to give something they don’t like a second chance. As a rule, they’ll dismiss it as “the same crap as before” and all that time and effort to fix it is wasted.
Better to just toss it all out and try something else.

I mean, the video kind of contradicts itself. At first it says GW2 (unlike most MMOs) is based on a cosmetic progression, instead of a stat-based progression. Then it says that the BiS gear was supposed to be incredibly hard to get. You cant have both ways. Either you have an horizontal / cosmetic progression, or you have a vertical one. To me, its pretty clear that exotics were never supposed to be extremely difficult to get. They were supposed to be just like golds on GW1. A BiS gear somewhat easy to get, and from there on there would be only cosmetic upgrades.
