Rising

“We have arrived troops. Spread out and set up a perimeter.”
“Yes Commander, Sir!”
“Elder Tlacela, the troop support you requested is at your service. What is the situation?”
With a slow deep throatily voice, “You have not enough.”
“Excuse me?”
“You are only thirty, you have not enough. I was under the impression that Fort Trinity is the main base of operations in the area. Why have the Pact not sent more soldiers?”
“I assure you Elder Tlacela, all thirty of these soldiers are specifically trained to fight dragons.”
“I hope for all our sakes they are, but this is not a dragon… this is a monster.”
Raising his voice the Commander exclaimed, “A…monster? You claimed that a dragon was attacking your lands!”
Anger building Tlacela strongly spoke, “Claimed!? That sunless beast of the depths returns with vengeance…AND you Pact think I waste your time!”
“Sunless beast?”
“Tequatl!”
“No! That is not possible! Tequatl, lieutenant of the elder dragon Zhaitan has been dead for months. It was slained prior to the founding of Fort Trinity and the invasion into Orr.”
“Dead…the servant of the elder dragon of death? Fool! You will soon see. It comes every day at dusk, when the sun is at rest in the sky. The monster floods our lands, destroys all our defenses, and the filth swarms to attack our homes in the black of night. With each passing sunrise we count and bury our fallen with what honor we have left. If this continues…we Hylek will be forced to leave our sacred grounds.”
“I swear to you Elder Tlacela, it will not come to that. The Pact will silence this beast for…wait, what is the noise?”
Just then the Commander was interrupted by the far off screams of Hylek scouts.
“There is something in the water!!!!”
Turning toward the Commander, terrified Tlacela says, “It is dusk! Tequatl is here!”
Quickly addressing his troops, the Commander shouts at the top of his voice, “Now is the time! Soldiers of the Pact…draw your weapons…summon your courage…charge forward! All together now…ATTACK!!!”
The beast lunged out of the water at incredible speeds, forcing a tidal wave upon the defenders. Try as they may, they are powerless to stop the onslaught of undead falling from the monster’s wings. With each terrible scream, the beast instilled even the most battle hardened warriors with unshakeable fear. As the sun lowered fully behind the horizon…the outcome became clear. Tequatl has won.
“Retreat! Fall back! Protect the civilians! Get the Hylek women and children to higher ground! NOW!!”

“Elder Tlacela…I…I am sorry. We have failed.”
In a saddened and sorrowful tone Tlacela finally speaks, “Yes…you have. You have allowed the sun to set upon the Hylek this day.”
“I…”
“…I must see to my people…and you must see to yours Commander. This night belongs to the sunless.”
With his head held lower than it had ever been the Commander addresses his captain, “Captain, report.”
“Sir…we lost half of our troops.”
“By the six…excuse me Captain; I…need to be alone.”
