I tried connecting it, but only got a midi output. Maybe I need to try something different…

Look for a headphone jack, a lot of electronic pianos will have them (so you can practice without waking your house up). Often you have to convert the cable with an adapter to plug it into the line-in port on your computer. If you use the microphone port, you will need to make further adjustments to maintain a quality recording.
