How should this work? The A.Net staff can’t split themselves.

Exactly what I was going to point out. Split a already small team up into two smaller teams.

Would only hurt things in the long run.

It’s a kickstarter guys.. it provides funding. Would not interfere with GW2 development in any way, shape, or form.

So.. you are thinking that they would get enough money to hire a completely new team and then magically learn them about the whole code of GW1?

So.. you are thinking that they would get enough money to hire a completely new team and then magically learn them about the whole code of GW1?It will effect GW2 no matter how much money they gain (unless of course said money is used to buy the source code of GW and begin developing it outside of ArenaNet, but I find it quite doubtful that NCSoft would agree to that.

Yeah.. I honestly don’t know much about magically learning things. I’m also not a programmer and know nothing about code.
I know a little something about money however. If you have enough, you can do almost anything.
I really hope this becomes reality.

This originated in a guru thread that I’ve been following.

Personally I think it’s unrealistic. Even if you provided the funding to hire a separate team, that team wouldn’t really be Anet, and they’re just as likely to either butcher the game’s principles and/or produce subpar quality content. What I don’t want to see is for GW1 to turn into some immortal zombie that survives just for the sake of surviving, like say Everquest and its continuing annual expansions. Oh, you didn’t know that they still release expansions for that game? Exactly. If Anet’s heart isn’t in it, I’d rather that they just preserve the game the way it is, untainted by pandering to the audience for a little extra monies. On the other hand, it is my hope that Anet does take a sincere interest in revisiting GW1 at some point, though it’s more of a pipe dream at this point.

Wait, I just had an epiphany. What if they had another Super Adventure Box type instance, where you could play GW1 inside of GW2? lol

Oh gosh, if this ever happened, I would probably cry of joy.

Too bad it never will. Arena Net knows they have failed their GW1 fans but;

1) They don’t care, they got our money through hype and falsifying intentions anyway. Almost every fan of GW1 bought GW2.
2) It would be akin to admitting this in front of everyone who plays this game.

They probably already have all the concepts they need for Guild Wars Utopia or whatever other projects/updates they started but abandoned for GW2. They just need someone to pick up the ball and run with it.

Some of those old concepts turned into EOTN; others were discarded before work was completed. I want to see the Kickstarter happen, but new content will need to be developed basically from scratch. Even if the devs who originally made the concepts come back to working on them, it’s been years since they’ve touched the code.

What really irks me, though, is that abandoning old technology is so prevalent in gaming despite the demand for continued product support. Dungeons & Dragons has seen this happen for decades – there are always players who don’t want to “upgrade” when a new edition comes out. Even though their game of choice is not being updated, they still keep playing the version they like. When 4th edition came out, a lot of players threw their money at other publishers who promised to keep updating 3.5e with their new books. 4th edition is all but dead right now, while Pathfinder is still going strong.

On the PC gaming side, DotEmu and GOG demonstrate daily that there is a great – though niche – market for older games. Runescape has recently relaunched its old version after massive fan demand. People still play GW1, and since ANet never releases actual play numbers, this Kickstarter idea could be a very good way to gauge how much interest (and by extension money) there still is in the game.

I understand ANet has different priorities now, because GW2 is where the money’s coming from. If ANet cannot spare any of the “old crew” for GW1, maybe the best solution would be to outsource GW1 development? Kickstarter funding could be used to cover licensing fees and dev salaries, with the final product – be it another Bonus Mission Pack, an expansion, or (one can dream) a full campaign – hopefully making enough of a profit to continue the cycle.

I was responding to the comment which stated a fear that any GW xpac which came of a Kickstarter could potentially abandon the core values of GW and screw everything up. My claim is that because there exists an institutional memory not only of the game as it currently is, but also some shelved ideas for GW’s development, that we need not fear that. They may start from scratch in concept but not in philosophy, maybe.

That said, who knows what will come of it? I’m willing to take the risk!
