Guild Wars 2

I wrote this as the intro poem for Chapter 11 of my work-in-progress The Engineer and the Ingenu, but it stands alone quite well enough to share, I think.

This was a triumph.
Test Subject Three-Four-Two: SUCCESS!
Who’d have guessed it from a Krytan human?

Incingergen Science ™
Where ethics are just an afterthought.
My lab was banned from Metrica
And now my krewe are all dead.

But to social pressures I refuse to succumb,
And I’ll keep on testing, though you think that I’m scum,
Still my research gets done, and I’ve made a neat gun,
Called the PWNR – I know you want one!

I’m not even crazy.
My doctor assures me that I’m sane
(despite not living through our last encounter.)
What does it matter?
Test Subject Three-Four-Two is mine.
He may not be all that bright
Compared to me—but who is?

All these sheets of data, they are beauty to me,
And I need an income because golems aren’t free,
With three-four-one subjects burned
Think of all the things I’ve learned—
PWNR’s the best gun that’s not Legend’ry!

Go ahead and hate me.
Call me an Inquest traitor scab.
Where would all you gear-heads be without me?
Maxed out at Masterworks?
That was a joke, Bookah, fat chance!
You want your Ascended gun
And I will make you the best.

TS Three-Four-Two shall obey my every whim
Just remember me, and be glad that you’re not him
For alchemagical advances we must learn to take our chances
On our few test subjects who survive!

And believe me that he is alive.
My Krytan human TS is alive.
And I’d be sad at this point if he died.
What is this confusion I feel inside?
Why should I care if he is still alive?
