The begin of the end

My name is Horsa Durheim and Im a deputy officer of the Seraphs of Divinitys Reach since 2 months. What Im doing here , or at least trying, is to tell you stories about the daily madness in the city, make you aware of problems in the society of humans and to kill your free time.

You all are probably asking yourself: „Why is that guy doing this?“ Well I got several reasons.

The first is that I got kicked out of my girlfriends home after a lets say „normal“ relationship based argue (ok half of the furniture have been turned into a pile of scrap and the house needs a renovating but its still quite normal if your girlfriend is a mighty mesmer).
Actually a 29 year old guy should have a house or at least a small apartment where he can stay. I used to own a small house with 2 rooms, a kitchen and a bathroom.
Sounds poor you say? Its still better than the tiny mudhole I call a home right now. But that was before the Canthanian district collapsed. And since the civil servants of Kryta are so extremly effective and sincere I havent seen a single copper coin until this day which leads to the second reason: money.

The salary for my work as deputy officer is barely enough to pay the rent. What is left of it isnt enough to buy food, clothes, meds and stuff like that (Exept you can show me how to survive from 23 copper coins a month without starving, eating trash and stealing). All my savings also got lost during the fall of LA, the bank vault which contained all the money from ten thousands of people got melted to a chunk of worthless scrap metal.

The last reason is redeeming myself. As former mercenary (and terrorist) its not easy to find a honest work in this city. And if you are asking yourself: „What? A terrorist?“
Thats a story I will maybe tell you later. But back to the topic

My first day was actually one of the better ones. After reciting our oath to defend humanity and stuff like that where all of us crossed our fingers, we have been shown our new working place. A bored looking LT. Groban led us trough the almost empty armory, the overflowing prison cells (with seperated showers), the „vehicle“ lot and several other rooms which were not significant enough to be written down here. After this we were given our new armor and weapons: old plate armor smelling like Ettins after a shower, rusty swords so dull and deformed you could sit on the blade without getting hurt at all, guns with less power than peashooters of the children and the banner cloth (The banner cloth was actually a used towel, yellow on the edges but budget cuts wont allow anything better).

Our group got divided into several departments, I got into the one which handle anything bigger than theft . No idea what the name was but there are 6 large departments: Army, petty crimes, crimes and 3 other ones of which nobody knew what they were actually doing or if they were doing something at all exept wasting public tax money.
I had the luck to be assigned to Lt. Chiara Belladonna, a nice sight of a redhead, who was responsible for all districts exept the upper city. Some of the other guys had the grateful job to guard the sewers under the command of Corp. Hardriech.
With a smell like a Orrian undead army, speaking abilities and mood of an Ettin and a face only a mother could love he wasnt the most pleasant person to work with.

The most interesting thing though was the so called „vehicle“ lot. Expecting Charr-bikes, tanks and pact choppers we were pretty surprised and disappointed. The only thing we found were a bunch of Moas. Most of them were to small to ride on others probably not strong enough and several only a pile of dusty bones, remains of the last barbecue. I picked the sturdiest one so I could at least turn him into a nice meal if he turns out to be too rebellious.

Given our equipment, vehicles and orders there was nothing which could stand in our way of protecting and serving, or at least I thought so.
Of the 134 recruits only me remained at the end of the day. And thanks to the shortage of people I have to deal with the work of 5 people while only getting paid for 1.

And kids still want to become Seraph officers when they grown up?
