We all thought that the city was impregnable. Nobody took her seriously at her seemingly idle threats. Until this happened. Lion Arch was going about their business as usual when Scarlet’s ship dropped from the sky, sprawling forth all kinds of minions that quickly overwhelmed the security within. As a result, the five races banded together their finest to deal with the threat. But there wasn’t enough time to prepare: the guild leader was away on a dungeon exhibition with the elite team that mainly consisted Drakan and a few others. We couldn’t hope to retake the city without them.
“Captain Magnus,” I said. “Legacy of Liberation reporting in. I’m standing in as second-in-command as the leader is not available.”
“Very well. Your name is Shinta, right?”
“Yes. But sir, how do you intend to retake the city with only a few hundred men at your disposal?”
“We won’t. Our main focus is civilian evacuation. Get your men and be ready to fight.”
“How long do we have?”
“I don’t know. Here,” he passed me the Whispers communication device. “Follow my orders. I don’t want you dying on me. By the way, where is your armor?”
“I don’t need armor,” I replied, dropping my hand to the gunblade stowed at the holster. “I’ve got a weapon and that’s all I need.”
“Whatever suits you. Now go, the citizens are waiting to be rescued.”
Civilian retrieval wasn’t going to be a very easy task. Those armed with projectile weapons had to be sure not to accidentally shoot them down. I passed on the instruction to the people that were under my command. Among those were S-ranked fighters like Stargazer, Icabel, Kimiko and El Liong.
“Here is the plan. Take two other men with you,” I said to the S-rankers. “I will be bringing Mealrie and Kyakusen along.”
“They’re not very reliable,” Icabel protested.
“It’s okay. They listen to me. Now, hurry up before we die from the choking gas.”
The guild dispersed almost automatically a few seconds that followed the order. Before I could brief Kyakusen on the operation, she jumped away. By the time I opened my mouth, she was nowhere to be found.
“That woman sure wants to have it her way,” I said.
“That’s big sis for you,” Mealrie said. “Time is running though.”
I tilted my head slightly, evading a shot that would otherwise be a headshot. I pulled out my gunblade the moment we were facing a horde of Aetherblade enemies. Mealrie tumbled forward, tapping her temples and set ablaze one of them. I dived into the crowd, dodging all their arrows before exploding them with a spin slash.
Despite dealing devastating damage, not all were killed by the explosion. For that, Kyakusen sprung from her hiding, stabbing them where they least expected it.
“Took you long enough to come,” I said, wiping the blood off my face.
“That’s how you thank me, eh?” she said, sheathing her daggers with an intense killer stare right back at me.
“Always happy you can help.”
A small circular device rolled onto my feet. I glanced at it, spotting a string thay was lit which burned towards its body. I kicked it but it detonated close enough to send me flying high into the air. I somersaulted back, landing on my feet as I watched spots of blood fall off my head.
“Shinta!” Mealrie cried.
I turned around just on time to block an incoming roundhouse slash that drove me to my knees. The Aetherblade charr laughed triumphantly as he threatened to overwhelm me with his strength. I pulled out my pistol, firing multiple shots at the torso just as he managed to break the clash to leave a shallow cut on my shoulder. Mealrie bounced in, punishing them with an earthquake-like spell that left them to bleed. I struggled back up to my feet, watching the enemy surround us massively.
