Time to stretch those creative muscles! (Contest is open to both EU and NA players!) It was originally in the in-game events section, but others believed it was better suited for here! Mods please feel free to move it if the other section was the right one! I apologize for any inconvenience!

~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~

In the Personal Story of GW2, we all experience the story from the perspective of the character who becomes the Pact Commander, Marshal Trahearne’s second in command, in the struggle against Zhaitan.

How often do we stop to think about all the characters who make the story possible? The nameless, unsung hero NPCs who fight so valiantly for our cause?

We cannot all truly be Commander of the Pact, so realistically, did the Commander really partake in every important encounter directly, or was he/she simply a guiding hand?

Who were the researchers, the spies, and the soldiers at the roots of every success?

What if . . . we learned their stories?

What if we knew their names, their faces?

What if we thought, just for a moment, about the soldiers we left behind?

What if the soldiers went back? What if they chose to stay?

When the gates of Fort Trinity closed under the siege of Risen Giants, did you shed a tear for those locked outside?

This November for National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) (as a personal fan creation), I will endeavor to tell the story of the Pact’s rise from a different perspective, and I would like members of the community to have the opportunity to contribute. To this end, I am opening this thread for players to submit 5 short character “sketches” (approximately 200 words, no more than 300), one for each race. You may include any details you wish, within the word limit. (Each should only take five or so minutes of writing.)

At least 5 character “sketches” will be selected, and for each selected character, the player who submitted it will receive 50 gold in game. In addition, once the five have been selected, there will be a final contest between them, in which a panel of judges (to remain unnamed as of now) will select the best entry among the five. This winner will receive an additional 50 gold. (50g isn’t bad for 5 or so minutes of your time. :P )

~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~v~^~

Keep in mind, once you are given payment for the “sketch” you will no longer own rights to the character, including but not limited to the story use, the final version (which I will create), and its development. For this reason, I ask that you do NOT use any personal characters (such as those in your own stories or role plays). Regardless of this, I will give credit to those players who contributed so that everyone can see who the original sources are.

P.S. If I find myself unsuccessful during the month, then at least that’s still 300g out there in prizes!

SUBMISSIONS CLOSE ON NOVEMBER 4TH AT NOON PACIFIC TIME!
Winners will be announced the following Friday.

Here are my submissions!
—————————————————
1. Human
—————————————————

Marian Marchant, a human born in a small village south of Divinity’s Reach. She’s stable and practical, usually putting the needs of others above her own. Perceptive of other’s feelings. Interested in understanding and helping others.

She’s 23, forest green eyes, and extremely tall. She was self-conscious about her height growing up. She was often teased by other children and this embedded in her a desire to seek out others who might not fit in and to accept them as they are, not as others think they should be. After leaving her village she has found many others her height or taller and she is more accepting of it.

She chooses to believe that her life is an incredible gift. She didn’t always think so. She was poor and her family had many problems taking care of the basic needs (food, shelter, health), but after her teenage years she was able to see the world from a different perspective and now chooses to look at her life in a more positive manner.

Biggest fear is being locked in an enclosed place; when she was three during a game of hide and seek she climbed into a wooden chest. A mean spirited older boy placed a heavy anvil on top of the lid, and several hours passed before an adult happened upon the chest and let her out. Since then dark small places make her nervous and she sometimes has panic attacks when in that type of space for more than a few seconds. Even walking under the low bridges in Divinity’s Reach sometimes triggers her anxiety.

Her prized possession is an old metal buckle. It belonged to her father who passed away before she was born. She keeps it close to her always.

2. Asura
—————————————————
An Asura elementalist named Xapp (Tempestologist Xapp). He grew up studying weather patterns and ‘chasing’ storms. Now he’s got the knowledge and expertise to bend the elements and use them when needed.

He still considers himself a scientist first and foremost; even though he’s seen a lot of battles he prefers to think of himself as an intellectual rather than a fighter.

He has two progeny with Meteorologist Keiiko; a son Xankk and a daughter Kazkki. He enjoys playing Ackle-Denth and chronicling his discoveries.

Appearance: medium height for an Asura, grey skin (slightly greenish), bald (by choice), and generally favors clothes that are dark blue with golden accents.

He carries a metal baton that extends into a staff when needed. The baton itself is used often as a pointer to tap at things the less intelligent creatures (humans, Charr, Sylvari and Norn) should notice, and for poking or whapping those who should be paying attention but aren’t. When the staff is extended the bottom part curves to the right, and the upper part curves to the left, representing a flow of wind when the air pressure changes. The top of the staff has holographic swirls of particles moving upwards in a funnel shape.

3. Sylvari
—————————————————
A Sylvari named Caeder. She is various shades of brown and her glow at night is a rich amber. Her hair looks like bark grown asymmetrically to one side in shades of chocolate and rich coffee. Her eyes are a light brown with flecks of green. She is shorter than average for Sylvari with a thin, tomboyish build; narrow hips, flat chested, and mildly athletic.

Like many Sylvari born at dawn she is overly curious and she views each day as an opportunity to explore and learn. She loves talking to others and has the ability to draw out things from them they normally don’t share. Her openness and friendly demeanor often inspires others to instantly like her.

Her Luminary is Aife, and from her she learned to hunt with a bow. She travels with animal companions – many of which travel in the distance and only appear near her when she calls to them. Her natural ability to communicate with others extends to creatures, animals, and sometimes even to plants (rudimentary as a feeling, but communication nonetheless).

Caeder considers herself an explorer – her goal is to travel as much as she can. She doesn’t need to discover a place no one else has been to necessarily; instead she wants to travel to places she hasn’t been to before.

4. Norn
—————————————————
A young male Norn named Eikinskjaldi Orjjan. A warrior with the Spirit of Wolf as his guardian, he is loyal, strong, and prefers to battle as part of team rather than alone. He believes there is strength in numbers and the bonds of companionship of a group make a difference in battling enemies.

He is an excellent tracker and can usually find a trail even when others consider it a lost cause (he shapeshifts into wolf form to track).

Appearance: He is a medium build for a Norn and medium height. His upper back is covered in a large Celtic tattoo with a stylized wolf’s face in the middle. The tattoo extends down his spine and then wraps around his hips and down the front of his thighs. His hair is long and dark, and his face is considered handsome by Norn and human standards. He wears Koda armor having spent a good deal of time in Frostgorge Sound fighting Dragonspawn and the Claw of Jormag. He has no special love for the Koda, but does respect them.

The weapons he carries are also Kodan. He favors a greatsword and hammer, but also carries a longbow primarily for hunting for food.

Not so easy to write, when you’re not native speaker… But still, I’ll take my chances
_______________________________
Matthew The Voiceless
32 years, human

short brown hair, piercing blue eyes, rather tall, quite muscular;he has a scar in shape of claws’ marks going through the neck.

Not super smart, but trustworthy and open for people. He is patient and kind, when it comes to new recruits, but requires discipline and best performance from his squad.

Born in Ebonhawke, when he was 5, his mother was killed by a charr, while she was gathering some herbs in a forest. He witnessed it and survived only because of some huntsmen passing nearby. They took him with them and rised in a believe charrs are monsters and all they deserve is to suffer. Also, from then on he can’t speak – charr’s claws ripped his vocal cords.

While living with huntsmen, he learned to use a magic of illusion to communicate with people, which was suprisingly effective.

Things changed, when Kralkatorrik awoke. Matthew and his band were way to close to his pass and all but him were turned into branded. Matt was rescued by a charr patrol passing by. It was almost like history repeating itself. Charrs put him in custody, but had way more important matters than taking appropriate „care” of prisoner. That’s how he got an opportunity to observe his once-mortal-enemies and learned that they’re not at all like he remembered them.

When the initiate chaos around awaking Elder Dragon calmed down, he was interrogated and he stated his will to fight the dragons. He got an offer to join Vigil, to which he agreed.

His biggest fear is the fact, that he brings bad luck to people around him, which is why he always wears his lucky talisman – charr’s claw, the same that took away his voice.
____________________________________________________-
Wolfsbane
3 years, sylvari, cycle of night

She has a very dark, almost black skin with swirling crimson pattern, which is glowing with a bright red color at night. Her „hair” are little branches growing a bit up, with red leaves on them. She has dark red eyes.

Her appearence may be making her look dangerous or agressive, but actually she’s quiet and calm most of the time. She has incredible patience; she can stand without a move for the whole day.

This assets made her a perfect recruit for The Order of Whispers, and indeed she joined it almost immediately after waking up from the Dream. But she did it more because of sylvari’s natural curiosity than any serious reasons. Only then she learned it’s gonna be hard work and that she’s not really prepared for it.

But she didn’t give up, instead she spent almost all her free time on a training, which resulted in a perfection in wielding a sword. She also mastered technics of stealth, becoming the useful member of the Order she chose.

Wolfsbane has a habit of keeping all her secrets to herself, but she’s also collecting other people’s secrets, what results in her sometimes confusing them and thinking she did something she really didn’t and feeling blame for it; The dirtiest secret she carries is a mother killing her own child fearing one day it will fall under dragon corruption – Wolfsbane seems to think that was her, even though she knows, she can’t have children.
______________________________________________
Kirra Ebonflame
26, charr, Iron Legion; Ebon Warband; currently a gladium

Rather short and thin for a charr; average muscularity; her fur is snow-white, with her hair being almost black. She has dark grey stripes all over her body.

Unless most charrs, she isn’t concentrated on fighting. Sure, she knows how to use weapons, her favourite being a staff, but she prefers to study old volumins. She becomes very agressive, if someone is threatening people close to her or her books.

As a young cub in fahrar she was often laugh at, because of her lack of war skills and different interests. Her to-be-warband wasn’t very tolerant, but they needed her knowledge so much, they let her stay with them, even if they weren’t happy about it. Kirra, feeling insecure most of her life, with no understanding from her surrounding, was happy being accepted in any form.

But after a while she felt tired of being used by her supposed ‘family’. It didn’t help that she studied elemental magic, quite controversial among the charrs, as similar to the magic Flame Legion used. That’s when she met her „love” – human called Thomas. He was a researcher and worked on the Elder Dragons case. He was the one that showed her, that she can work for better case in Durmand Priory.

When her Warband found out she was meeting a human (even though then it was strictly friendly relationship), they decided to eventually banish Kirra. She left without a second thought, giving herself to resarch completely.

She understood that she loves Thomas much later, but she never told him that, in fear that no-one including him would understand and accept that.
___________________________________________________
Bjorna Ahlberg
47 years, norn, raven spirit

She is tall and muscular, with blond hair and blue eyes. On her back she has a tattoo – raven wings.

She is a very positive, energetic person, always ready to cheer up people around her.

She was born and raised in a typical norn family – hearing stories and songs about heroic deeds since early childhood, which resulted in her eager to learn how to fight.

Her weapon of choice was the longbow, but she soon found out, that she’s most effective using a sword and a war horn.

In her 20s she left home, ready to find an adventure awaiting for her. On her journey she met many interesting people and creatures and started writing songs about them. She sang them during the long nights spent sitting around a fire or drinking in taverns.

Soon her epic, touching ballads became quite famous. They inspired people, made them want to fight, choose their own fate.

When she realised that, she understood that’s what her great deed should be, so when the Pact was established, she volunteered to help, raising the morale with her songs.

She travels with a very old raven called Krigor.
___________________________________________
Koxx aka „Bum Bum”
20 years, asura

Average asuran height, grey skin and almost red hair, usually made into some chaotic hairstyle, green eyes.

He is quite impatient, with only exception being his inventions – he can spend hours combining different items, trying to find the most effective and explosive mix. He’s very self-centred and a bit obsessive over explosives and brutal force in general, which is why he is considered mad, not only by fellow asuras.

When he was younger, he dropped college, as his mentors couldn’t deal with him in a proper way. He got bored very quickly, couldn’t sit in one place, if not combining some dangerous ingredients.

As a bit of an outcast within the asuras, he was left alone to do his experiments. It resulted in his construction of a heavy armored battle golem he made for himself, with two plasma guns and energetic shield. He also worked on highly effective grenades for the destroyers – he had a theory, that fire could be fought with fire, of course to some point.

Recently he was discovered by Vigil and agreed to cooperate; in return he got a lot of new, rare materials he can experiment with.

Hey, I love the idea you’re working on here. Here are my submissions. I’m trying to dictate as little as I can of what happens after the formation of the Pact, and instead focus on how they came to be there and outline what their place in the Pact is.

Also, a quick, friendly note to Unfathomed about Matthew the Voiceless – using separatists like that in his story suggests that the current truce between humans and charr has been there for nearly 30 years, but in fact the ceasefire was only signed a year before GW2 launch. Before that the humans and charr were in open war, there was no treaty for the separatists to oppose.

Anyway, submissions:

Human – Megan Reedly

A descendant of the Ascalonians who followed Rurik over the Shiverpeaks, Megan (Meg to some of her friends) is a cheerful, playful woman with a love of music. She is 22 years old, born and raised in Rurikton, Divinity’s Reach. When she was young she would spend hours listening to musicians playing near the statue of Dwayna, and when she was six, her parents bought her a cheap lyre to play on, and she managed to get some basic lessons from a charitable minstrel.

When she was sixteen, she got a job as a minstrel at the Maiden’s Whisper. She was given an adequate lyre for this, but after some years she was able to buy a much higher-quality one. Since the development of Uzolan’s mechanical orchestra, she has been worried about what music-playing machines will mean for minstrels and the art of music itself.

Eventually Megan began to feel stagnated and wanted to travel, but she didn’t have the impetus to do so until Corporal Kellach’s attack on the city flooded the streets with undead and pushed her out of her home. She journeyed to Lion’s Arch and had a brief job playing at the Crow’s Nest before Zhaitan’s attack once more threw things into disarray. After the recapture of Claw Island, she decided to travel with the Pact and help to keep morale up.

For the most part she intends to stay within camps, playing music and conversing with resting soldiers. However, she wants to help any way she can and is not wholly useless in a fight, as she learned mesmerism to enhance her performances, and is able to adapt it to combat purposes. She will do whatever she can to prevent anything from happening to her lyre. She also happens to be afraid of spiders.

Charr – Varina Brightburn

An impressive Blood Legion charr veteran equipped with a mace and shield, Varina was assigned as a legionnaire to the siege of Ebonhawke and later field-promoted to centurion, but in 1320 AE she was ambushed by Vanguard guerrillas and took a blow to the head from a mace almost as soon as the fight began. As a guardian she saw the protection of her fellow soldiers as her responsibility, but this became impossible as her concussion all but blinded her and left her unable to do more than flail wildly as her warband was cut down around her. She herself was recognised as a valuable prisoner and captured rather than killed.

Varina spent some months in Ebon Vanguard captivity but refused to break under their interrogation. She still bears scars from this period including an unsightly burn on her face which she usually keeps covered out of courtesy to her comrades. She was eventually freed by Logan Thackeray in the Ogre Revolt, but was stripped of rank on her return to the Black Citadel and relegated to scrapper duty. She spent months living on as little money as she could until she had saved enough for a one-way gate trip to Lion’s Arch where she began a new life far from the stigma of her past failures.

Still capable and eager to fight, Varina joined the Lionguard and protected Lion’s Arch for years. She was one of the survivors of Claw Island, and after its recapture she was one of the many Lionguard who joined the Pact, in her case the Vigil. She is a strict but fair leader who looks after her troops, secretly terrified of suffering the same loss as at Ebonhawke. She still struggles to trust humans, and she is deeply wary of fire.

Norn – Inga Arnisdottir

Inga is an independent norn woman born 28 years ago in Njordstead, in the north of the Snowden Drifts. She is a curious explorer, and as a kid one of her favourite pastimes was to explore the nearby dwarven ruins of Grooble’s Gulch. Though she didn’t understand anything she found there, this did little to quell her fascination with the ruins. She also learned hunting as a way of life, and became versed in the use of the longbow and the warhammer.

Shortly after Inga came of age, the Durmand Priory came to Njordstead to mount a proper expedition into the Grooble’s Gulch ruins. Inga’s childhood interest was rekindled and she offered to help them in their explorations, finally learning about the dwarven civilisation which had lived there. Excited by the prospect of learning more about the dwarves, Inga joined the Durmand Priory herself. When the Pact was formed, Inga gladly joined the fight against Orr, feeling a similar passion towards learning Orrian history to that she had long felt for the dwarves.

Inga is friendly and reliable but also competitive, and enjoys drink as much as the next norn. She does not feel affinity towards any one Spirit of the Wild in particular, though if asked she would choose either Bear for her self-reliance or Raven for his valuing knowledge. She keeps her blonde hair short. Since joining the Priory she has largely abandoned the longbow in favour of her hammer, which she can wield with devastating force.

Asura – Kraxx

Kraxx is an excitable older asura and an alumnus of the College of Synergetics. From a young age, he was fascinated by the Elder Dragons, and he dedicated much of his life to studying them. His early works attempt to examine their place in the Eternal Alchemy, drawing comparisons and contrasts with other powerful forces and entities. Later he moved on to trying to understand the magical processes behind their abilities, particularly their corruption and minions.

Perhaps predictably, he joined the Durmand Priory to gain access to greater resources for his research. Though much of his work is undertaken in secure laboratories, it also necessarily involves a large amount of field research. Despite the danger, he is excited by the prospect of observing dragon minions first-hand, and is reluctant to trust the accuracy of second-hand accounts. When Kralkatorrik awoke five years ago, he dropped everything to be among the first researchers to study the Dragonbrand. When fighting, however, he keeps his distance and uses pistols and alchemical compounds.

He makes no secret of the fact that he is more interested in understanding the dragons than in destroying them, which sometimes puts him at odds with other scholars. Nonetheless he takes part in large-scale projects to combat the dragons. He is a proficient alchemist, working alongside the likes of Professor Gorr (whom he looks up to) and Researcher Maeva on the compounds used against dragon champions and later Zhaitan himself. He has a wife who is also in the Durmand Priory, though she works in the field of history rather than that of alchemy; the two met when Kraxx requested her notes on Alkar’s Alchemical Acid.

Sylvari – Gethin

Gethin is an aloof eight-year-old sylvari ranger of the Cycle of Night. He is quite tall by sylvari standards, and has dark, barky skin. He is a loner and a wanderer, who left the Grove early in his life and joined the Soundless at Naulshead Refuge until he had learned to distance himself from the Dream, after which he eventually moved on. His sole constant companion is his black stalker, Umbra, who often remains out of sight, waiting to take by surprise anything that decides to attack her master.

Though he is uncongenial, Gethin is not uncaring. In his travels he witnessed first-hand the dangers presented by the dragons’ minions and, recognising them as a global threat which needed to be fought, he began taking action against them when he got the opportunity, relying largely on traps and ambush tactics. His favoured weapons are a sword and a parrying dagger.

In 1322 he caught the eye of the Order of Whispers when he unknowingly interfered with but ultimately helped one of their operations. He joined the Order as a reconnaissance agent and occasional member of small strike teams. While he is slow to bond with others, those he works with often enough will find he warms to their presence, engaging more in team tactics and sometimes joining in celebrations and other off-duty gatherings, though he remains quiet and contemplative throughout.

Tåkebarn Ullkin, short Tåke is an armor smith at the Vigil and later the pact.

She was born, like a lot of norn children, on the hunt.
Her mother was in her last weeks of pregnancy when she went hunting and got deadly wounded.
A unrelated norn found the dying woman, but she died before giving him her name. Ulle Ullson, the man who found her, was a good hunter and was used to gut his prey, so he had not much scruples to cut the corpse open to save the unborn child.
He, as a single Norn, took the baby under his wings, while traveling around Tyria and so she met a lot of people from all kind of races…mainly the drunk specimen though. She has a soft spot for Charr (non-sexual!) because a lot of the drinking and fighting companions of Ulle were Charr.
She respects the strong hierarchichal system of the Charr and their military strategy, which makes her a bit special among Norn that are more independent fighters.
Because of her adoptive father being a bit rough around the edges she learned how to take care of herself very early and so she started to travel without him when she was in her early adolescent years. They are still on good terms though.
She was staying with a warband (drinking companions of Ulle) for a few years, learning how to do armor smithing.
The closest to her, in the warband, was Thalia Crookpaw an old, grumpy charr lady that was teaching her a lot.
When the warband died in field Tåke and Thalia, as the crafters of the warband, stayed back and so survived.
Since they didn’t know were to go they joined the Vigil and continued crafting and repairing armor for them.

Tåke is a quiet person, big even for a Norn, with a deep and raspy voice. She tends to walk a bit hunched over, has chunky legs and strong muscular arms and broad shoulders and back.
her skin is red from being outside so much and full of freckles. She’s strawberry blond with pale grey eyes.
She’s not pretty and cute but in her own way kind of handsome.
She’s very observing, a decent hunter, likes to laugh, brawl and drink and cuddle fluffy Charrs (if they let her)…she likes wearing fluffy fur too, which makes her look even more massive, than she really is. She also likes braiding her hair in intricate hairstyles and put all kind of adornments, like wooden, stone or bone beads, colourful ties or carved hairsticks and forks in it.
she does wood and bone carving in her free time.

Like her adoptive father, drinking sometimes makes her do stupid things.
She also can be ridiculously competitive when drunk.
She’s pretty religious, her spirit is the polecat, but she prays to the main spirits too.
However she usually doesn’t talk much about her belief.
For her, religion is a very personal thing and people shouldn’t meddle with her relationship to the spirits.
Generally she doesn’t like people to meddle with her stuff and doesn’t meddle with other peoples stuff unless she has a very good reason.

Tsagg is a young Asuran thief from the College of Static.
Growing up in an average Asuran family (father and mother work in science, golems care for the child) He has a doubtful moral reasoning.
Starting as a child with sneaking out of the house and stealing stuff from neighbours, he started his carreer in the dark at a very young age.
When he started his education he was very good at what he calls „idea recycling“…with other people’s ideas of course. He also made money with ghostwriting for his fellow students and stealing and selling things from other Krewes.
He is very good at his „job“ and staying low-key and the only one noticing his deeds were a member of the Order of whispers, who made him join the order in exchange for staying quiet about it.
Tsagg doesn’t care though, since he now gets payed for breaking in other peoples houses and stealing things… which he would do anyway.

He’s an physically energetic but relatively unremarkeble fellow of average size with floppy ears and grey-brown skin and big muddy-green eyes.
He always was physically very capable and uses his acrobatic to hide and to get into other peoples houses.
His favorite foods are fruits and roasted crabs.
he talks a lot but tells very few about himself.
In his free time, he thinks about new possibilities to make money.
When he has enough money he’ll build a gigantic robotic dragon and become a new elder dragon…that’s his dream.
almost everything is possible with science. :I

Asura

Like many other asura, Iggis held a dream of becoming a krewe leader and being in charge of his own laboratory. He passed it off as a mere interest in flora and fauna, but it was an interest no less that would bring him recognition for his work to earn him his dream. The completion of his thesis, the use of skale oil as a component in high flammable and combustible fuels, would soon find him overlooking his own lab. Amidst his krewe stood his thin, slightly taller than average physique; his complexion gray, with black; swept-back; short hair complementing his inquisitive blue eyes. He could be curt, and he only showed it on occasion, but he had respect for his fellow researchers.

Life was almost perfect for Iggis, at least, until the rise of the Elder Dragons. He preferred to hope that the Elder Dragons would remain in their slumber, or that one of the Orders could take care of them; surely they had the capability if Destiny’s Edge caused Kralkatorik to flee, nearly defeating him. And yet, Zhaitan called for the formation of the Pact, only to be followed by Mordremoth. He wanted to ignore the threat, but Mordremoth’s interest in the same energy Rata Sum drew from make that an illogical choice. He hoped to remain with his research, though a childhood friend urged him to join the Pact; one who had ambition greater than he, and yet, they left their research to fight. Iggis knew he couldn’t fight, but perhaps as a Priory scholar he would be useful. Leaving his research would mean putting his dream on hold, if he could even ever return, though maybe his fuels could be turned into explosives…maybe he wouldn’t be giving up his dream after all.

Human

Born into a well-to-do noble family, Lady Alessia knew little beyond her family’s social status and the realm of Krytan nobility. Her father and mother upheld and raised her family’s status before passing duties along to her eldest brother, while her other two elder brothers used family status and connections to become well off themselves, leaving only their fair and rather coveted younger sister without much to do, though her presence and kind demeanor attracted many courtiers. Fair skinned, with long, dark blond hair and sky blue eyes, a bit on the thin side and taller than average soon found her a renowned and respectable fiancé to her liking, though despite having everything a noble could want, she wasn’t really happy.

Lady Alessia’s noble background kept her safe, though while on an outing into the Krytan fields for a picnic, she and her escorts and company witnessed the brutality of the Mordrem firsthand. Her fiancé only thought to take her back to the safety of Divinity’s Reach, and she was carried back in a panic, shocked at witnessing the loss of civilian life. Unsettled, late that night she left under the cover of darkness to try to look for those in need, brining with her only a ceremonial dagger that she barely had the slightest idea how to use, watching the blades. The Mordrem were not beaten, and she found herself nearly suffering the same fate, if not for a battle-hardened female Pact platoon leader. She was urged to go home, and terrified as she was, she refused, instead wishing to fight. She insisted upon joining, and reluctantly, the platoon leader took her along. She thanked her family in a letter later on, and to herself renounced her noble status and vowed to fight as Alessia.

Norn

Beginning as a renowned Wolfborn, then joining the Vigil, making his way to a Warmaster, the tide of battle was all Karnath Valensson knew. Taught to fight by his father, and well to do growing up, he had known little hardship, and although boisterous at times, he knew respect, and demonstrated such humbly. Rare was it that he was bested in a match, and he was well-respected in turn for his cajoling demeanor among his allies both in Hoelbrak and in the Vigil. Though only newly promoted, he was excited to be a Warmaster, and ready for the coming challenges; or so he thought.

The rise of Zhaitan saw the formation of the Pact, and he still held a position of leadership, his rank respected even by the Priory and Whispers, and above all the rest he was eager to take the fight to the Elder Dragons. For the first time in his life, he would be bested in battle, and badly beaten. Zhaitan’s minions were a new enemy, overwhelming, tireless, and yet some had cunning. He overestimated the prowess of his allies and himself, fighting more of Zhaitan’s minions than he could handle, and covering the retreat for his comrades, he nearly lost his life…though he was saved by another Pact Warmaster, and a Mesmer at that. His spirit was broken, though he still struggled and fought, with many more allies than before, not believing in his strength as he once did. After the defeat of Zhaitan, the same Warmaster would be the one to inspire him once again; he was reminded to train beyond physical strength, to trust in one’s allies and teamwork, and that, for the sake of his pride, he would have another chance to prove himself against the Elder Dragons: Mordremoth.

Sylvari

Soon after being born into the world, Nylanna found herself entangled within the thorns of the Nightmare Court. They attempted to convert her, and when that failed they sought to kill her. Harassed for months, she finally found refuge with a Pact convoy who dispatched her pursuers, leaving those not caught up in the heat of battle to retreat and give up. She knew next to nothing of the world, though she had some fighting prowess, and could defend herself one on one well enough, thus was invited to stay with the convoy until they reached Fort Trinity.

Nylanna had suffered the atrocities of the Nightmare Court firsthand, and thought her wyld hunt to be to help others be free of their ensnarement, and yet, she felt compelled to stay at Fort Trinity, to see what the fight against the Elder Dragons held in store after the defeat of Zhaitan. A personnel transfer from Fort Trinity to Camp Resolve was soon underway, and she yearned to return to the Grove, or so she thought. She found herself keeping with the convoy until reaching Camp Resolve, and having trained herself in combat along the way, volunteering to assist in the assault against Mordremoth. She sought to learn, often engaging with Pact members from the Priory, and utilizing what she learned in battle. In time, she would find herself more than a novice healer and potion maker, aiding her prowess with bow and arrow and dagger. She could be shy until she started on a task, after which her determination would not fade. She found friends in the pact: Priory, Whispers, and Vigil alike. Nylanna wished an end to the nightmare court, though even the Nightmare Court would make no difference if all fell to the Elder Dragons. Perhaps she was yet to discover her true wyld hunt.

Charr

Malyth Shadowtrace, Ash Centurion and leader of the Trace Warband who earned his rank challenging the orders of a former centurion, in the end avoiding a crossing through the Brand during a mission to infiltrate and assassinate the leaders of a separatist camp. Often stationed near the brand, he knew the consequences and resources it would take to cross the Brand, and he wished to avoid it at all costs.

Sleek, dark fur, the color of the dimly lit shadows, true to his namesake, though his chest revealed a tuft of silver fur; all most would ever see of him is the silver tip of his tail, either before he disappeared into the shadows, or before his enemies were silenced. He was open to discussion, though those he commanded knew his final word was law, and no one dared test his judgment, out of respect for both his continuous success and skill with a blade.

Even though not a Sentinel, Malyth’s understanding of corruption and how he worked with it caught the attention of his Tribune, who asked him to lend his aid to the Pact’s assault on Mordremoth. Despite preferring to work within his homelands, he knew the threat the Elder Dragons posed, and he refused to see any further spread of the Mordrem, much less the creation of another corrupted land.

Leaving Trace’s second in command in charge in his absence, along with a respected Legionnaire and personal friend of his, he aimed to share his knowledge with the Pact, train their soldiers, to guarantee Mordremoth’s defeat. Malyth carried his armor, his weapons, and his skills with him, and they were the only things anyone other than his closest friends and warband would see. Within the shadows of his heart, however, he carried the burden of loss: a still-healing soul from the loss of his mate to the Brand, instilling in him his dedication and desire for vengeance against the Elder Dragons. Not even all of his warband knew of his loss, though he always pushed forward; hoping, one day, for a place he could call home, that he could defend, and where it would be safe. Every day, he thought of his mate, his resolve unwavering as he remembered his smile, sometimes revealing a rare smile of his own.

I like your characters, Ryoku, but isn’t this going to be about the fight against Zhaitan, not Mordremoth?

He preferred to hope that the Elder Dragons would remain in their slumber, or that one of the Orders could take care of them; surely they had the capability if Destiny’s Edge nearly defeated him, causing Kralkatorik to flee. And yet, Zhaitan’s minions continued to flood the mainland of Tyria, even threatening Rata Sum. The awakening of Primordius was enough…he hoped to remain with his research, though a childhood friend urged him to join the Pact just after its formation; one who had ambition greater than he, and yet, they left their research to fight.

Lady Alessia’s noble background kept her safe, though while on an outing into the Krytan fields for a picnic, she and her escorts and company witnessed the brutality of Zhaitan’s minions firsthand. Her fiancé only thought to take her back to the safety of Divinity’s Reach, and she was carried back in a panic, shocked at witnessing the loss of civilian life. Unsettled, late that night she left under the cover of darkness to try to look for those in need, brining with her only a ceremonial dagger that she barely had the slightest idea how to use, having watched the Blades. Zhaitan’s minions had not been beaten, and she found herself nearly suffering the same fate, if not for a battle-hardened female Pact platoon leader. She was urged to go home, and although terrified as she was, she refused, instead wishing to fight. She insisted upon joining, and reluctantly, the platoon leader took her along. She thanked her family in a letter later on, and to herself renounced her noble status and vowed to fight as Alessia.
