gw2lfg.net - New , improved gw2lfg.NET
I like this one. Very clean, friendly and just a click away to get what we need.
But if the .net get’s back I will use because it’s more better worked than the main one. ^^
About the “sister site”, they have their listings and that and this one should have theirs, you have the right to make another LFG website, improved, but not get their data. ^^
Asura thing.

If you are going to try to steal links at least try to make it less obvious. Very low and unlclassy. You really should not say that you are the same as the .com sister site since you are in no way affiliated at all with him at all. I know this since it was a guildy of mine that has been running the other site since the game was released.
I would at least remove all reference to you being better than the original site and try to stand on your own merits.
Unless you have permission from Fotoh to link the other site I would remove the using his bandwidth for your site and just have your own database for the LFG.

Interesting, looks like bootstrap meets iOS. Much more eye candy than the former- nice work.
Unfortunately along with the drama that this seems to already have caused (lol) won’t having 2 sites cause a divided community and make things more complicated?
Maybe you two should work together !
it won’t cause a divided community since he is leeching directly from gw2lfg.com. All he did was put a pretty skin on it and put the other site in an iframe.
Since it is set up that way things listed on gw2lfg.com are listed there since he is pulling the info directly from the other site and inputting the infro to there from his site.
I wouldn’t really be that upset about it but it was a guildy of mine that created the original site and this is merely using his bandwidth since all the data is still being processed through his site. Yet if people use the new site he will not get any kind of donations of any kind to support his site and keep it running.
Bandwidth and hosting is not free after all.
He has two banner ads up on his site simply to help pay for the hosting and bandwidth.
Of course if he has permission from the original site to cross link the data it really doesn’t matter. Although I suspect he doesn’t.

I’ve been watching the whole .com vs .net thing play out over the past few days. The amount of hate simply because the .net site takes data from the .com site made me think there’s a lot of fanboys towards the .com one. The response from the .com’s owner isn’t exactly nice either, leading me to belive he’s in it for the ad money. For real world use, who cares, if it’s better it’s better, end of story. I also saw some people pointing out the domain registration, but so what, I also register mine privately and to my not a real company.
That said, after seeing this post, it now looks like the .net is some sort of scam / bait & switch. For starters, the .com site is not your sister site, that’s a straight up lie. You do not own or have any relation to the .com site. In fact, the owner has given you a cease and desist. Secondly, saying .net is the better bet isn’t exactly something someone would say unless they’re trying to spread false information to attract people to one and away from the other. Third, your lack of post history says a lot, leading me to believe you created a trash account, don’t really play the game or simply don’t use the forums. Lastly, you claim to have no ads, but you pay for ads to be displayed on other sites and you additionally say under your ToS that there are ads. A project built by a member of the community wouldn’t do something like that.
He does not have the ads simply to make money for real world use. He has had to upgrade his bandwidth to 3 servers just to handle the load and amount of hits. I know this because it is a guildie of mine that created it.
I can’t prove it but I suspect the purpose is to drive traffic to his site and then slap in a unobtrusive ad to make a profit. He states he has tried to contact the owner of gw2lfg.com site to make arangements multiple times and I know this is a flat out lie.
Just shady all around. If you really just want to help the site out and have it better looking work with him and give him your design to put on his site. End of story, he gets the support to pay for the hosting and bandwidth and everyone gets the nice new format.

The .net site is thieving the listings from gw2lfg.com by scraping the data.
Do not use this site. If they are so unscrupulous as to steal information like this, what will they do with your account information.
I’ve been watching the whole .com vs .net thing play out over the past few days. The amount of hate simply because the .net site takes data from the .com site made me think there’s a lot of fanboys towards the .com one.
I have also been watching it play out. I am far from a .com “fanboy” — I have used the .com site and find it very useful, but only until we have an in-game LFG system.
And it’s easy to look at this at first blush and think it’s a good thing.
That said, bandwidth theft is a serious issue on the web. If you’ve ever run a site, you know how distressing it is to have a competing site steal not only your content (which I realize the .com site cannot legally claim the content, since it’s user-generated), but also the bandwidth you pay for. It’s unethical.
But the thing that really sets off alarm bells for me is how aggressively the .net site owner is promoting his site. I can very easily see someone taking a look at the success of the .com site and realizing what a potential cash cow it is, and wanting in on that action. He may not be making money off of ads right now — but once he has stolen the eyeballs, I would not be surprised if that sucker is monetized up the wazoo.
This does not look like a project that is designed to help the community. It looks like something designed to benefit an individual/group of involved individuals at the cost of someone else’s time and money, and I refuse to be a pawn in it.
You have:
- One post on the boards
# that one post is an ad - No affiliation with the main site
# in fact you leech their database and pull it into your UI
I will be sure to tell everyone I meet in-game who asks about your site to not visit it, because what you’re doing is borderline illegal, especially if the main site’s owner told you to stop.

I have to warn everyone about this website:
Please look over the reddit GuildWars. This person is pulling information on other website and claim the content unethically from the original gw2lfg.com.
Again, .NET, don’t use and if you do, you are at your own risk.
Read up all the story here: http://www.reddit.com/comments/1a666h/gw2lfgnet_faster_more_mobile_devices_autoupdate/
This is important.
Think the one big option that needs to be placed on the table is to have Fotoh approach A-net in talks to selling the rights to the .com site so that the coding can be used in-game. That way, the .net site becomes completely useless and Fotoh will have something that everyone can enjoy without having to tab out.
I would use LFG more often if it was an in-game feature. I’m an old WoW player that got use to quickly getting groups together using that feature.
tldr;
It’s the same 10 people that appear on the Reddit posts that downvote and bad talk this site. You have your own opinion so why not give it a shot right?
For any confusion on what we’re doing
We’re scraping the other site to demonstrate the technology and power of what we’re doing. We’re not relying on it solely as we still allow users to post groups and when they post it on .net it appears on both .com and .net . Notice how knowing we can post on .com we DON’T mass spam them like they did toward us. It isn’t very good business etiquette.
We tried to get in contact with .net in the past and he has ignored our emails (this was well before we started the .net site). Why would we want to join with him now?
The reddit community and the .com creators spammed and attacked .net when it first came out. Here at .net we choose to compete by showcasing better techniques rather than relying on childish games that will only hurt others … temporarily.
Not sure why you’re afraid we’ll take your account data, there is nothing requiring you put in ANY account data into the site.
Server hosting costs are really really cheap. I don’t think .com is complaining about having to run 3 servers for his traffic unless he has spaghetti code and highly inefficient caching. The .com owner is just stressing because we’re taking ad clicks away from him even though we’re not capitalizing from it ourselves (whats 15$ server costs anyhow, its minuscule)
Anyways enjoy!
So if the only reason you were scraping data was to showcase the technology and power of what you are doing then stop doing it since you have proved your point. At this point if you are not stopping even after he has sent you a cease and desist request then you are just showing how much you just don’t give a crap.
In short he asked you to stop officialy on your support site yet you refuse to do so. It isn’t your data to scrape so stop doing it and host your own data and stand on your own merrits instead of leeching data and calling it your own technology. Especialy if you don’t want to work with him now.
and lol at the mass spam. The only way to mass spam your site is to post it on the .com one since that is the only place you get your data from.
I also think it is hilarious when you go to your site and it says no listing found then you see a popup that says please wait while we contact our server then it shows all the listings from the other site.

I actually have not posted in the Reddit thread, so you’re already lying.

There is none.
We’re scraping the other site to demonstrate the technology and power of what we’re doing.
You’re populating your own database to look busier than you actually are.

This block is so full of fail, you had to go to college to conceive it.

You never attempted to contact him.

Better techniques mean shady business practices and stealing another site’s database which you openly brag about, yet somehow that’s not bad. Got it.
Not sure why you’re afraid we’ll take your account data, there is nothing requiring you put in ANY account data into the site.
Glad to see you’re actually reading our posts, because we’re not.
Server hosting costs are really really cheap.
For you. You’re pulling your database off another site so it’s just a handful of hits for you. He has to load his database per person who loads your site, so of course his is massive. You’re just tunneling his bandwidth through your site. Of course you don’t see much of the overhead.
I don’t think .com is complaining about having to run 3 servers for his traffic unless he has spaghetti code and highly inefficient caching.
Read above.
The .com owner is just stressing because we’re taking ad clicks away from him even though we’re not capitalizing from it ourselves (whats 15$ server costs anyhow, its minuscule)
He’s stressing because loading it through your site he gets all the bandwidth hit, and none of the ad viewing/clicks. Also, $15 a month is in fact wicked cheap. Like, that’s how much it costs for just the domain kind of cheap. Who’s your provider?
Anyways enjoy!
No.

Cease and Desist.
You do not have permission to scrape my site. This is my first attempt to contact you nicely with a cease and desist now.
What you have done is attempt to use my name “gw2lfg” and pulling data directly from my site to populate your site.
Cease immediately.
You have not attempted to ask my permission and we have given no such permission for this activity. "

So much drama, who cares.
I’ll use .net because it’s simple and sweet. The graphics on the side indicate when people want 80’s only, experienced, speed runs, etc. Everything is just sleeker.
So the .com guy’s stuff is posting up on .net huh? Cool, that makes it easier for me to use .net. The .com guy is losing ad revenue? Cool story, I’ll make sure to think about every corporation that loses ad revenue when I visit local grocery stores that sell the same stuff with better prices or better quality. Except I won’t, because I don’t care.
I’m going to do a test overnight to see if this supposed memory leak exists on .net, but if it doesn’t then why not use it? Makes my experience better over-all.
For real though, ANet needs to just integrate this into the game.

The person who cares is the person who’s bandwidth this person is leeching without permission. The .net owner has beeen given a cease and decist by the owner of the .com site and he has refused to do so and continues to leech data.
Whether or not the site has a better format or not is irrelevent at this point unless you really just don’t care about ethics.

Yeah it’s a real sad shame when the youth don’t seem to really care about ethics. I lay 9 to 10 odds that if the shoe was on the other foot, something would happen to .com. This reminds me of the legal battle over the WWF.com site when the wrestling federation got it and wildlife had to deal with the leftovers.
I swear .net needs to be dealt with on a legal level. Leeching is becoming the new phishing scam. Oddly enough webroot won’t even let me view the .net page.

Then the .com owner should handle that issue. It’s well within his power, why he hasn’t done it by now is beyond me and also not my problem.
I care about ethics in the real world, not on the internet. What do I have to gain on the internet by choosing to use the website that has more shortcomings to organize my groups?

Because obviously running a site on the internet doesn’t cost any money. To say you care about ethics in the real world and not on the internet is kind of laughable.
So your saying it is the .com owners responsibility to forcibly stop someone from stealing data through litigation or removing the feature that lets the mobile apps work simply because another site wants to steal the data?. I don’t see why the .net owner can’t just say ok I have been asked to stop I will. At this point the continued leeching of data is just the .net owners way of saying they really don’t give a crap about anyone elses rights or costs.

Well you’re right the .net guy should stop leeching data. But that doesn’t affect me.
I don’t see how I was being funny about ethics, I’m a pretty nice guy, I mean I certainly wouldn’t do this to anybody. I’m not saying the .net guy is good, I’m saying I’ll use his site because it’s better whether he leeches data or not.
I don’t care if the .net owner gives a crap about me because I care not for him, I care about his site. If it goes down, I will go back to .com. No big deal.
It’s all very simple.
I want to post here and say please do not support gw2lfg.net. I do not like their business practices.
If this .net guy would make his own data base – as some one suggested above – then the community will split up. And after this lots of other LFG sites will come up and the community will b e shred apart.
I think complaining for the copy rights in this case just shows that the LFG was not made for the community as a helping but it was made for the profit.
So, it is like you are saying that wikipedia in other languages is stealing data from the English language. Well, it is like that if you consider translating = data leaching.
I think the .net guy should make his interface in more languages and so his site can be considered an international LFG site which is not restricted to English speakers.
Just use whatever site you like guys, and the many others that might appear as long as all the data is centralized and not spread apart.
No one steals anybody’s work.
If you are using an e-mail client like Outlook or Thunderbird and you add a google and an yahoo account there and open them, do you that considered data leaching?
I think not.

First off the outlook analogy is bizzare. It would not be considdered leeching because Outlook is a client for checking email. Yahoo and google bost host their own data for email independantly. I can’t even figure out a way to make that data leeching in my head.
At the heart of the matter is the fact that the .com site has gotten a lot more traffic than it did originally and hosting has gone up as a result. He pays for this out of his own pocket and with donations. How would you sugest he pay for the bandwidth if not with donations or some ad revenue as he has to pay for the bandwidth of not only the people hitting his site and using it but the people hitting the .net site as well.
The .com site initially had no ads and no donation area. It quickly grew a lot faster than anticipated and hosting and bandwidth costs went up. If you factor in all the hits the site gets from people going to it and all the mobile apps for it (IE windows phone, iphone, and android) that adds up to a lot of bandwidth and data charges. Then add another site on top of those just using the data and taking bandwidth by pulling from it then it gets absurd.
Just for statistics there have been Total LFG’s created: 3,102,324 since the site went live. The site has been live 137 days exactly. That equates to 22,644 groups per day and that many hits per day minimum. That does not count hits for refreshes as well or hits from .net pulling data recently.
