The biggest thing that bothers me is guilds that are registered to gw2gvg.com, but only accept challenges from guilds they’re sure to beat. That’s just illogical, the challenge is the whole point of a GvG, I could not care less about the rating itself honestly. There is no fun in running over guilds that pose no resistance, I’d rather lose to a good guild.
Also, the rating system makes it so that if you lose to a guild with a much higher rating, you don’t lose that many points. This should be regulated by penalizing guilds that don’t accept challenges (for example, first challenge refused=nothing happens, starting from the next refusal to that same guild within a certain timeframe, the rating of the refusing guild starts to drop, and it does so exponentially for each refusal).

Just my 2 cents.

Prime Radese

This is a legitimate concern. Each Friday as the Match reset happens, we contact all guilds listed as available to organise the weeks GvG’s. The first response is generally “What guild are you from?”. Upon answering it’s a case of “No” for reasons such as “we don’t have enough players” or “key players are on holiday”.

It’s a kick in the teeth to see these guilds running with 30 odd in WvW and GvGing other guilds in the same week they’ve refused you. Starter guilds seem more eager to learn than mid/high table guys are willing to risk their precious points. (IMO these practice/non-official matches that go on are a joke)

Are we approaching a situation where the higher up you go on Gw2GvG the less likely you are to get matches?

I am missing something. Why are practice matches a joke? Honestly GvG for me is all about practice and good fights. Ranking is pretty irrelevant on the website anyway because it is very frequently quite inaccurate. And it is hard for servers to prove themselves across tiers. Number three NA guild is from Eredon Terrace over Night Shift? Okay. Yes, it is nice to have some general idea of where guilds stand, but if people are taking it so seriously then maybe the lesser evil is to get rid of rankings and only track history. I am sure we will not reach consensus on that, though. This is a social problem and it will not be fixed by rules and regulations, in my opinion.

Fights need to follow along rankings or something else instead of just being 100% choice. There also needs to be a bit of surprise to matches. Fight with what you have and what class you are on. Building your team to counter is lame and boring. There are players in here that many of you may refuse to listen to. You know what though? They are right. Much of the time they are right. Jscull and saiyr for example raise a lot of valid points. Some of you see a negative tone in what they say where it is not warranted.

As for rules and regulations. Too many of these is what most frequently scares people off. This is one of the things that many people will disagree with. If you constantly bicker about rules you wont get anywhere. As far as I’m concerned anything you can do in WvW is just fine. With the exception of no siege. Anything a player can do with his character in WvW should be permitted.

GvG should be about which guild is the best or just guilds battling it out for fun to try and improve. It should NOT be about who can stack the odds in their favor the most, who can perform in perfect conditions, can win with the perfect setup, or who can methodically counter the other guild the best. This doesn’t teach you how to be a better player or have fun. It teaches you how follow some predefined meta, and conforming to that meta/build, without overcoming challenges and improving.

I would suggest a system where the matches are not chosen by the guilds. If they want to practice there is nothing wrong with that. However, in a match that counts(or whatever we want to call it)the two guilds do not pick their opponents. They can choose to refuse, but that should reflect poorly on them. Guild goods and guilds that could improve all win. Good guilds prove their worth and guilds that need to improve can learn from it. Both of them can have fun either way.

Again guys, very nice discussion, good arguments pro and counter.

I know there are voices against setting up basic rules, but it is not our goal to regulate or ban everything. Just some basic stuff. Just like everyone else, I would love to see this grow and I feel it can only grow if you have enough freedom to explore the bounderies of the setup. I am, as we speak (or write ), trying to find out some stuff with Marty from gw2gvg, and writing a first draft of some general rules. Please don’t shoot me down for it, wait until the draft is finished, then you can kill me.

What WvW distincts of PvP is the fact we are free to get any build, any food any weapon in the game. This is a thing that should be preserved.
Yes I get the point of people saying Warbanners are less spectacular for the spectators, but it is a part of WvW and so it should be of GvG.

This is the fun factor in GvG: " YOU HAVE TO BE READY TO TAKE EVERYTHING". So if they run warbanner, make sure you focus the downed hard and fast. Use tangling roots to counter the warrior that runs in to ress… There are several ways to handle that situation, it’s up to the raid leader to find what is best to overcome them.

And the victory of EP over Agg proves my earlier mentioned point. Meta is changing and will continue to change. Without knowing the outcome of this matchup I asked a thief to stay on his thief on our raid. Just to test out some stuff. And sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. You only learn by trying. I’m currently checking if their is an engineerbuild that could work (even though this one seems a bit harder )

Off topic, props to EP, didn’t see the footage but beating Agg isn’t a small thing.

Oh btw, I agree that the EU scene is further ahead (thanks to RG and their legacy) but I enjoy the fact US is rapidly closing the gap. Would be awesome that in a few months some guilds from EU would cross to US and vice versa. Just for fun.

And one of the most important things on this thread: props to Agg for admiting their defeat. Since they were rank 1 they had lots to lose but they didn’t care anyways. Props for the real GvG spirit.

Lesson I learned from last night:

Spectators will kill GvG before ANet Saves It

If you are a spectator, in a guild that is having a GvG, or just roaming around and come across a fight… DO NOT INTERFERE. Multiple occasions last night random people were jumping in and out of the fight, hitting casters and then stealthing away, including people from 1 guild that were fighting. If you can not control the members of your Guild during a sanctioned, OFFICIAL GvG – you shouldn’t be fighting.

ANY interference makes anything Orge or ANY GM or Member of a GvG guild is trying to do, obsolete.

I’ve been against official rankings but I do see how striving to beat #1 evolves the meta and gives people something to strive for. Any time a “number 1” in any game/sport goes down, they come back stronger than ever. Maybe this will be the fight to become #1 that the NA side needs to put it on par with EU.

If you’re referring to the EP vs Agg GvG, you’re incorrect.

Yes, there were thieves attacking casters then stealthing away. They were not spectators. They were part of the GvG team.

Spectators should probably be banned. I know it takes away from the fun of some people, but there are too many people that forget to turn off auto-attack or are simply there to troll. If people want to watch the GvG, there is always someone streaming. It would be much easier to take care of the trolls this way, too. Anyone who’s not part of the GvG will be killed if he/she doesn’t want to leave the area.

I know there is video from a spectator POV showing someone doing the exact opposite, not apart of the GvG team, purely a spectator (even had stacks). Yet to see the video myself but I was there when it occurred and watched the thief go in and out.

But yes, spectators need to be controlled.

I would overall agree with this, except it’s like any other law… The ones who break the rules aren’t going to follow the rules anyway. That old “if you outlaw guns, only the outlaws will have guns” saying.

Here’s hoping that official GvG support (assuming it gets added) will just have a spectator option like PvP has.

Your sentiment is right on track, for sure. EP has played a few GvGs that were affected by stands-interference, and I’m sure pretty much every GvG guild has. I’m fully in support of at least all of the members of the two guilds who are fighting moving over to the windmill ramp or something along those lines. That way everyone there can keep a solid eye on each other and no mistrust can take root. It’d be relatively easy to spot a different guild running into the fight.

Of course the proper solution is for ANet to just add in GvG support. :-P

Exactly! Could even put 1 person from each guild in a separate party – both record and discuss anyone who could be interfering, just to have 2 more videos in case something like this was to happen. Yes, it’s another step but having trolls effect the outcome of a good match would just be bad. I noticed EP moved to the windmill I think at Round 5? That was a good move.

As the updates roll to WvW, not to mention Devon’s comments, I don’t think GvG is coming anytime soon. And to be honest, player run game-modes are the best because they are fluid.

Hey all. Won’t topple the great bald headed one. Sacrx If only the system had some way of applying the rating timebased (as in when matches occurred). Just awaiting all the other results to be confirmed. Shame SoE (from GH) disbanded since though.

Personally looking forward to the potential of an exhaustive week against Piken. Ever since we left in Feb we’ve wanted it. Since June and being more involved in the GvG scene, even more desire to clash horns with old friends

We decided to endorse the community and be a part of the family. We hope to see us GvG’rs flourish and grow. Obviously with the eventual hope of us all, that ANET bring us a format for this (SPVP doesn’t cut it- need wvw gear, specs, consumables). Probably a long shot but a hope none the less.

So here’s to a healthy and fun vibrant future for the GvG community.

Elephant in the Room: When “orbs” return to the game, stat buffs will destroy the gvg scene as we know it.

So…what are we going to do about that?

Are the orbs coming back? No. Are we bringing back the buff? Yes, although the way you get it and hold it is going to be drastically different. Are you going to see a major map change in concert with this? Yes. Is it coming soon? Most definitely.

Gotta say, it’s getting really frustrating that ANet is completely tight lipped on this topic… A statement of SOME kind would be appreciated so we can set proper expectations and levels of hope, but….nothing. :-/ The idea that a change like this could be on the horizon, with the potential to kill GvG “utterly” as you put it, is really depressing when we know we may have no way to get around it.

Best case scenario for us… They fill in the lake, and replace it with 4-5 KotH style objectives that you have to hold to get the buff. Meaning most likely, if you hold the buff, you’ll get your towers taken, meaning the buff will likely never be up. It’s sad that we need the buff to be trash for GvG to continue.

Perfect example of why it took us awhile to join the ladder. Some take it for other reasons than what it is a place to challenge ourselves and show our fights.

Just had Do you feel Lucky [PunK] from FSP Refuse 2 matches both 5-0 to TUP.

Great welcome I am feeling from some aspects of the community.

If a roaming scrim is arranged or a fun time – like QQ/Mya combo vs tup for lolz or when its uneven numbers, just to kill time – ye that’s not a GvG. But when people ask for GvG then deny the results. One aspect of the scene I feared would rear its head. It was setup, gvg rules, even numbers, arranged gvg yet deny the results…

I guess my first taste of what others have complained about. Kinda sad we can’t be adults here.

Yeah, if AoN can put on 15v15’s, I think a lot of guilds will be into that. I don’t think anyone knew…

I would hope there’s some kind of review process for this though. If there isn’t, gw2gvg should make one. One guild shows a video proving the record, and an admin can override the “deny.” Could also be recorded as a black mark against the denying guild…

Heck, I’d be willing to volunteer as a reviewer, if they’re short on people. :-P

The whole reason this is not on the website is because “they’re” is just me and all my time is already going into answering everyone’s questions and creating new features for the website, heck I haven’t been able to raid for 2/3 weeks. Having to watch GvG videos of every match won’t fit my schedule :P.

If there are enough people willing to volunteer I might consider adding this, but I’m affraid this could also create loopholes.

You could consider also open sourcing the site code so other people can contribute. I have downtime since our guild is presently inactive, but I’m not sure I want to spend it writing PHP :-) Either way, stuff like that can be added later. I’ve been juggling ideas of how a site would look if I made it and I sent some your way a little while ago.

Well, looks like we have something to think about, then. Video reviews seem to be the best option, with black marks being given to violators though. I think you can probably find volunteers for the reviewing easy enough. Being marked as a “false denier” on gw2gvg would probably be enough, after a time or two, to convince guilds that it’s just not worth it, once those marked guilds didn’t get any more matchups.

@Ogre it’s the principle. In the same week they GvG’d HoB, Fire and others. We also GvG’d to include their results but not ours – “irked” me. That is all. I had massive respect for their sense of humour in WvW (when we kite ambushed them) and just in general they run alone and bring a fight.

Annoyed me that both gvgs were denied.

There is no “history” page. For guilds to show what they’ve done, who they’ve fought if it gets denied by the opponent. That is my concern.

When our gvg guys are available we will fight anyone at the times we are available. Unless its a muck around (like we’ve done with qq/mya combo or “arranged roaming”) i’d like our opponents to add the result. That “over competitive” nature of some guilds, denies others (don’t care about rating) their gvg results.

Nuff said, colour me disappointed is all.
