I wrote a story about Canach, the secondborn, and one of my sylvari males named Aynmire. Parts of this are the events which happened at the Lost Shore-event and some parts are about information about Canach from Scott McGough. But I summarized them and put my sylvari into the story with scenes which never happened (or which I believe that Scott McGough is the only one who knows how the scenes really happened). So most of it doesn’t belong to me but Scott McGough/ArenaNet/NCsoft.
The story originally was german, but my husband translated it into english for me.
And now I think I’ll post it here. Maybe someone wants to read it…
—————————————————————————————————————————-
Aynmire had always showen Canach the same respect and admiration as all the secondborn and also the firstborn. That was understandable, after all, they were the older and more experienced than he was and had seen much more of the world. He also knew the world outside the Grove, he was a mercenary after all, but he had much less experience of life nevertheless.
But despite all that, Canach seemed to be something special for him. He couldn’t explain or understand it. It just was so. And Aynmire was not someone who had to analyse everything to pieces. He was a warrior, born in the cycle of day, and he had always thought more of deeds than of words. That’s why he left the Grove one day and looked for his place in life outside the protective branches of the Pale Tree. So he became the soldier that he was today.

Then someday, his band of mercenaries helped out Inspector Kiel of the Lionguard. There seemed to be some trouble with a hardly known species called Karka and they ought to investigate things and question some witnesses. That was the day that he heard the name Canach again after a long time. An asura named Noll – who was the subdirector of a new organization called Consortium, which seemed to be a competitor to the Black Lion Trading Company and which plant to build a holiday resort on an island in the sea – gave him the information that Canach was to be found in Garrenhoff in Kessex and that he should be questioned about the attacking Karka. So Aynmire went to Garrenhoff to meet Canach, who wasn’t at all happy that Noll revealed him, but after some convincing talked and gave a Sworn Statement. Yes, he was partly to blame for the Karka attack, since he had taken some probes of some unknown plant species on the island called Southsun Cove in order to analyse them, when he was there for the Consortium to cartograph the island and build an Asura-Portal. That was probably the reason for the attack, since the Karka were roused and angered by the activity there. At least, that was the guess. Canach confessed and wanted to help, wanted to redeem his mistake. He believed that to be better than being imprisoned by the Lionguard. Aynmire didn’t have a good feeling about letting Canach be delivered to the Lionguard, but his band would do it and he couldn’t stop them, unless he wanted to lose his standing. Sighing, he asked for a moment to talk to Canach alone. He felt pity for him, but didn’t know how to help him.

After talking with him, he took Canach with a bad feeling to Captain Magnus of the Lionguard, who put him in chains for the moment. Following that was an attack of the Karka on Lion’s Arch, for whichs defence Aynmire and his band did what they could. When it came to chasing the giant Karka, which seemed to be the leader of the beasts, Canach was taken along to the island. And Aynmire also went there to help.
Magnus wanted to have Canach with him, so that he could help devise a battle plan, because he knew the island best and was therefore considered useful. As the plan stood, he left him chained in a cabin on the ship and prepared for attack. Aynmire was part of the soldiers and mercenaries that should take part in the attack. But he sneaked back to the ship in the first chaos of the attack. Luckily, all others were too busy to watch over him. So he got to Canach’s cabin without trouble. He kneeled besides the chained Sylvari and spoke softly to him, while loosening his chains. Finally he stood up and went to the door. “That’s all I can do for you. Make the best of it.” With a light but sad smile he turned away and left the ship, joined the fighting and hoped that Canach would manage to flee.
When the giant Karka was defeated, the cleaning up started. At first, Aynmire went back to Lion’s Arch, but he came back to the island a few days later to ask Inspector Kiel about what happened to Canach. He hadn’t heard that the Lionguard took a sylvari to prison, so he hoped that Canach did indeed get away. With a solemn, uninterpretable look he appeared in front of the Inspector and asked – after a general heads-up – for information about the prisoner, seeming to be hardly interested. Kiel appeared to be angry and explained that he managed to escape during the attack. Taking an effort to suppress a smile, Aynmire thanked her for the information and left the island. Thus, Canach had escaped and Aynmire hoped that he would be well.

The following months, Aynmire worked as mercenary as usual, but he had to think of Canach now and then.

One day, when he heard a soft knock on the door of his shabby room, he was surprised to find a Sylvari before it. He was of a pale green, with thorns coming from his face. Instead of leaves, he only had spikes on his head. He looked terrible, altogether. Worn out, rugged. And Aynmire would have sworn he never had seen this Sylvari before in his live. If there weren’t his eyes. The desperate, piercing eyes he knew so well. “I’m tired.”, the Sylvari said softly. And these words were everything Aynmire still needed to recognize him. “Canach?” With a shocked face he drew the small Sylvari in his room and closed the door behind him. “kitten ed, what happened?” He stood before him, raised his hand and carefully touched the thorns in his face.
“A lot. A kitten lot.”, was the answer. They took a seat on the bed and Aynmire looked at him, still shocked how much Canach had changed. Hardly anyone would recognize him. He let him tell his story. About Canach‘s escape, how he had started to change his appearance, by cutting off his leaves and how he had gone on about getting information about the plans of the Consortium. He had finally even infiltrated a weapon facility of the Molten Alliance. In short: he had gone through hell. Probably the reason for his radical change. At the end of the tale, Aynmire didn’t know what to say. He put his arms around him and held him, softly caressing the spikes on his head. “When this is all over, I’ll let them grow back.” Canach whispered softly. Aynmire just nodded and tried to give the Sylvari the calmness and closeness that he needed now.

When Aynmire woke up the next morning, Canach was gone. He only had left him a message on the table.

“Noll has destroyed my life. Maybe I will never see the Grove again. I can’t let him destroy the lives of others as well. This has to end.
Thanks for your help.
- Canach”

Aynmire sighed and rubbed his temple, the message still in his hand.
