Southsun-fanfiction - Aynmire and Canach
After talking with him, he took Canach with a bad feeling to Captain Magnus of the Lionguard, who put him in chains for the moment. Following that was an attack of the Karka on Lion’s Arch, for whichs defence Aynmire and his band did what they could. When it came to chasing the giant Karka, which seemed to be the leader of the beasts, Canach was taken along to the island. And Aynmire also went there to help.
Magnus wanted to have Canach with him, so that he could help devise a battle plan, because he knew the island best and was therefore considered useful. As the plan stood, he left him chained in a cabin on the ship and prepared for attack. Aynmire was part of the soldiers and mercenaries that should take part in the attack. But he sneaked back to the ship in the first chaos of the attack. Luckily, all others were too busy to watch over him. So he got to Canach’s cabin without trouble. He kneeled besides the chained Sylvari and spoke softly to him, while loosening his chains. Finally he stood up and went to the door. “That’s all I can do for you. Make the best of it.” With a light but sad smile he turned away and left the ship, joined the fighting and hoped that Canach would manage to flee.
When the giant Karka was defeated, the cleaning up started. At first, Aynmire went back to Lion’s Arch, but he came back to the island a few days later to ask Inspector Kiel about what happened to Canach. He hadn’t heard that the Lionguard took a sylvari to prison, so he hoped that Canach did indeed get away. With a solemn, uninterpretable look he appeared in front of the Inspector and asked – after a general heads-up – for information about the prisoner, seeming to be hardly interested. Kiel appeared to be angry and explained that he managed to escape during the attack. Taking an effort to suppress a smile, Aynmire thanked her for the information and left the island. Thus, Canach had escaped and Aynmire hoped that he would be well.
The following months, Aynmire worked as mercenary as usual, but he had to think of Canach now and then.
One day, when he heard a soft knock on the door of his shabby room, he was surprised to find a Sylvari before it. He was of a pale green, with thorns coming from his face. Instead of leaves, he only had spikes on his head. He looked terrible, altogether. Worn out, rugged. And Aynmire would have sworn he never had seen this Sylvari before in his live. If there weren’t his eyes. The desperate, piercing eyes he knew so well. “I’m tired.”, the Sylvari said softly. And these words were everything Aynmire still needed to recognize him. “Canach?” With a shocked face he drew the small Sylvari in his room and closed the door behind him. “kitten ed, what happened?” He stood before him, raised his hand and carefully touched the thorns in his face.
“A lot. A kitten lot.”, was the answer. They took a seat on the bed and Aynmire looked at him, still shocked how much Canach had changed. Hardly anyone would recognize him. He let him tell his story. About Canach‘s escape, how he had started to change his appearance, by cutting off his leaves and how he had gone on about getting information about the plans of the Consortium. He had finally even infiltrated a weapon facility of the Molten Alliance. In short: he had gone through hell. Probably the reason for his radical change. At the end of the tale, Aynmire didn’t know what to say. He put his arms around him and held him, softly caressing the spikes on his head. “When this is all over, I’ll let them grow back.” Canach whispered softly. Aynmire just nodded and tried to give the Sylvari the calmness and closeness that he needed now.
When Aynmire woke up the next morning, Canach was gone. He only had left him a message on the table.
“Noll has destroyed my life. Maybe I will never see the Grove again. I can’t let him destroy the lives of others as well. This has to end.
Thanks for your help.
- Canach”
Aynmire sighed and rubbed his temple, the message still in his hand.
