A guild mate and I are potentially planning on a switch soon. We’ve been on SBI since launch. While it’s a good server in some regards, I am finding it to be lacking in some aspects right now. Please note that I have been active all season and this swap has nothing to do with our rankings. I may end up staying but I’d like to know what’s out there!
1. How is your WvW aspect of the server? As in: what sort of players do you have? Is it a constant karma train and farm or do folks stick around even when the server is losing? I’m interested to know how dedicated to a victory the server is. I enjoy WvW and I like playing with folks who stand tall for their server. It’s very disheartening to lose many of your World’s strength because they don’t think it will be an easy fight.
2. How is the PvE aspect of it? I have been guesting here and there recently and found LA in some other servers to be MUCH more engaging than LA in SBI. Now, maybe it’s coincidence. It leads me to believe that maybe there is more going on in other servers? What servers do frequent activities together (or have guilds that sponsor server wide runs for different things).
I have not altogether decided if I will make the switch or not yet but I’d at least love to have some information. Thanks in advance.

I’ll be the first to tell you that Gate of Madness doesn’t have the best WvW. We have a large fair weather crowd which usually determines whether we win or lose, but we also have a lot of extremely hardcore WvWers who do nothing but, including myself, that you’ll always see in WvW no matter the odds. GoM has a lot of server pride, and community comes first before anything. I haven’t met anyone who’s transferred to GoM and hated it at the very least. ;D

As far as PvE goes, we complete Tequatl at least once a week on Gate of Madness and have a TTS guild that guests to BG to complete Tequatl 3 times per day as well. Other world events are always completed no matter the time of day, and we have a PvE population to rival TC.

Am I right to assume that you care about winning? Since that’s something the vast majority of people don’t care about….. most servers/guilds just want to have fun fights.

BG is the only server for you if you still care about ‘victory’ in ppt terms. BG/JQ/TC are the servers that play for ppt and care what the score is at end of week. Mag/SoS/SoR are some servers that play for fights and fun and ppt is byproduct. GL in your search!

I love Gate of Madness and I play whether we win or lose in WvW. I have been on the server since pre-launch. We have suffered a lot from the big WvW only guilds leaving but we stuck together as a server and we have a commander workshop and we train new players for WvW. We want WvW to be fun and we love our cupcakes.

Are you canadian? EU is terrified of Canadians and I want to amass a force of Tim Hortons lovers on Piken so we can hide in the bushes and jump out and yell BOO!

In all seriousness, if you haven’t played EU yet, you should give it a try. Different game where (outside of the leagues) it’s more about the fights and far less about the ppt meta. In EU they know it’s a game and not a second job.

Bonus: no organized karma trains in EU.

To clarify what I meant by “dedication to victory”, I’m just referring to the mindset of the community. Not necessarily that folks have to spend all day chasing a win but more the mindset of not giving up. Maybe a hint of that old “server pride” that you saw in older games comes to mind.

You’re down a particular week; do people come to put up a fight? Or do they leave because it isn’t a profitable “train” or something like that. Anyways, I appreciate the input and will keep reading more as it comes out. I do intend to guest a bunch of servers over a period of time and try all your suggestions (a shame you cant guest WvW but I can see why haha).

Consider SoS, we are full honey badger against any server. We didn’t roll over for anybody during the season even when outnumbered.

Hello chris rj. If what you are looking for is a server with some pride then anvil rock might be a server to consider. Our pve side is not the strongest but that is likely due to many of them coming back and staying in wvw. Our keep defenses are becoming widely recognized throughout tier 6 7 and 8. Servers that haven’t noticed finally realize by Monday and rarely attempt to take a keep afterwards.

AR is the place to be. We have fought long and hard after a spectacular exodus and we were pegged to be last in the Bronze league. Half way through we have turned it around with pure grit and are looking at 6th almost 5th. We have a strong server pride and a great group of core players who stuck through the dark months and push now for our turn around.

Im also from GoM. Im WvWing Monday-Sunday 5 hours a day for our server regardless of the situation, so I feel like I can give you an Honest answer.

1: We have a core of people who just don’t give up. That’s about 50 people. We fight. we are in fact KNOWN for fighting. We have given up exactly once in 7 weeks of fighting, and that was this week. Fighting hard is difficult when it will make exactly no difference if you don’t get first.

That’s the people pushing borderlands. There is almost always a decent group in EB as well.

In cases where we could not win, we had FUN and Fought our own battles for our own reasons, and to me that’s as much winning as winning PPT. During the HOD/SF/GOM fight we brought the pain to HOD Citidel north door, because why not.

Our server is a bit different. We feel like being a community and having fun is a win. (not to say we don’t try to actually, you know, win. We have a meeting before every matchup and try to come up with a strategy to win that PPT fight) We have a community TS you would both be quite welcome in and our top commanders command from THAT (and say) not from a separate guild voice chat.

So, you will get out of WvW what you put in basically. If your willing to join our TS and forums, you 2 would probably find it really fulfilling. Im not in one of the big guilds and am always welcomed, so being 2 guys in a BL wont hurt your fun.

2: PVE is strong on GOM. All you have to do is go on that LFG site and you can get pretty much any dungeon or a fractal group. Living world stuff gets smashed in the face with a hammer.

we have champ trains, we have dragons getting dragooned, all you have to do is show up really for live open events and theres going to be a commander doing it. Yes there are large guilds that run events and they are really friendly too.

I haven’t PVEed for like 4 months personally except for a couple of live events, but seeing as that is what our server is known for I don’t think it will have changed.
