Collection Expander
I’m disgusted at you Anet.
People have been asking for this for months now.
So not only does ANet listen to the feedback, but they do it in time for the holidays, AND at the same time as the 40% discount gifting thing.
Yeah, I can see how that would kitten you off. Those kittens. /sarcasm

Don’t hate on ANet for that.
must….resist…..(logs into mule parked at LA bank) oh yeah i’m good.

Nowhere does it say it is limited to collections IN YOUR BANK, until you buy it.
Anet, either fix the info or fix the collection expander, please.

What he means by this is that it only stacks to 500 in the collectibles tab, which maxing out stuff in your collectibles tab is not efficient due to the need for depositing while out going stuff in the game, getting collectibles. And when you retrieve that stack of 500 from the collectibles tab it splits it into two stacks of 250. Not really efficient enough to blow 800 gems on imo.
Just use a personal guild bank/bag alt instead if you don’t want to deal with gems… if it hits the 250, move it over or sell it. Not a big deal imo…

Yeah, I’d have been more impressed if this also increased the maximum item stack sizes for your account.
As it is, I tend to always try to keep my collectibles stash as empty as possible so I always have room to deposit while adventuring. This means that I tend to always take stacks of 250 out and into my item bank slots so I have room. So with that workflow, this particular 800gem investment is tough to swallow.
It might save a few slots here and there in my bank if I were to always pull out only 1 stack of 250 from my collectibles whenever it was close to full, otherwise it doesn’t really help much with bank space (particularly all those bloodstone dust/dragonite ore/empyreal fragment) stacks, which are still quite abundant and a clear means to flooding everyone’s inventory/bank space, but that’s a separate conversation to be had.

Same, I got my own personal gbank & two bank alts stacked w/bags. Far cheaper.
…
-_-;
Just take my money. No eye contact.
I’ve bought it and activated it but items in bank collections tab still stack up to 250.
What’s wrong ?
Not me. I have been waiting for this for a long time. As soon as i logged in and saw this, i thew money at the screen.

What’s wrong ?
Because it affects collections as in the other tab at the bank. The one with all the mats and minis.
At least that is what I think it means.

Being a massive hoarder, I cleared up at least one bank tab per expander. I’m a happy camper.
So it works on all slots in the bank, collections and 30 slot storage panes.
RIP City of Heroes
BEST item ever – buyd all 3 instant
gimmie more
let me max out to 5000 or 10000 – please
thx

That’s a bit of a confusing statement. It works on any collectable. The ones you fill up by clicking “deposit all collectables now”. Gathered mats, dropped mats, minis, ascended mats, event mats etc.
it works on pvp locker too
I will ask here I don’t feel like making new thread for 1 question, what is your opinion? will they put Collection Expander on sale for this Wintersday or not?
I think there is next to none chance that that’ll happen, but just to hear other opinions.

Bugs are evil, like cookies, but more evil.
If this increased Slot Size for Stackable items both in the Collectible Tab AND the Bank Tab, then I would be ecstatic!
Boosting above 250 in the collection tab only to have to split it back down to 250 when moving over to the bank tab? Crestfallen.

Just a question. Why would you want to have it in your bag? I could understand this way back when, when you couldn’t craft from your bank (remember that time?).
Not to say I wouldn’t mind a stack expander for all slots (including “normal” storage slots such as your bag and normal bank), I’m already happy with what we got now.

Bag? I didn’t say anything about a bag.
I said Bank Tab. So say I get the upgrade to 500 stacks in the collection tab, now I am about to go out and harvest but my collection slot for the pending harvest item is full of 500 items so I move the 500 in the collection slot over to the bank to make room but I can’t have 500 stacks in the bank tab so you have to split them into 2 × 250.
All I am saying is make ALL stackable slots upgradeable from 250 to 500-1000
to the feedback, but they do it in time for the holidays, AND at the same time as the 40% discount gifting thing.
Sadly, this Collection Expander can’t be “gifted” so it isn’t eligible for the 40% discount if I gift then purchase for me.
disclaimer: at least as of last night when I tried it.
Also, Mini Sparkles and Christmas discounts to trick ppl into buying stuff. kitten those money hungry devs! /s
Can someone post a pic of what your bank looks like when you get the collection expander? I’ve read the descriptions but still not fully understanding

Then how did you free up a bank tab?
Oh wait, so you moved mats from your bank tab back into the now expanded collection tab. Got it. Your statement about freeing up a bank tab misdirected me.
RIP City of Heroes
Heta, it looks just the same. Except now when you mouse over a stack of say, Bloodstone, in your collectibles, it says 1000 in the amount rather than 250. Or if you have less, like maybe 514 wool scraps, they all go into the collectibles wool scrap item slot.
Also my own bank now has a lot of empty slots from my consolidating all the spare stacks of stuff. I won’t be selling off extra carrots for a while, it seems!
Too expensive for zero extra costs for anet.
are you serious?
you even know how a databank work? you think there is no limit?

I would suggest you actually read up on databases and stuff before you make a statement like this.
Because right now you are just making a fool out of yourself.
If there were no extra cost involved, why not just have unlimited storage buyable? Or at release for that matter?

Really? I thought it was the $60 USD that I coughed up for the game in the first place (of which I would gladly cough up another 35 for an expansion, but not for gem store fare).

And how would those $60 support the game forever? Or even until know?
It is quite likely that all money they gained from the first rush of sales are already spent so to speak, and they are not living off people buying gems.

I am not. It is unlikely Anet used 1 byte per entry, so if they used 2 byte (they probably used 4 bytes), it costs them nothing extra to store 1000 items instead of 250. Even if they used 1 byte integers it costs almost nothing extra because storage is so cheap nowadays.
So you are basically claiming that we can store unlimited amounts of data for free nowadays? That is news to me.
You conveniently also decided to ignore the other part of my post.
If it were indeed completely free, why would they wait until now to add it?

….and the work to change and test this was free as well…..? I agree that the overall storage costs to them likely did not change, but that’s like saying dyes are worthless because the arrangement of the bits are just different from one color to another.

Not completly free, but storing data is not costing much anymore. You can probably save upwards of 10^12 database entries on a single HDD today. Not to mention they are saving all the logs of your trading post sales and buys since release which most likely costs way more storage than this.
They are charging extra for it now because they can. Its a capitalistic world.

Nope. $60 buys you the right to use the software. The servers are maintained via players buying gems. Your $60 right to use will become pretty useless if people stop buying gems and the servers go dark.

So why didn’t they charge extra for it at release?
And why do they limit it to 1000? If they are after money and it is more or less free free to increase it more, why not make the limit much higher and thus making more money?

There are several reasons this might be the case: 1. They didnt expect there to be demand for it. 2. They wanted people to think higher stacking took them extra effort. 3. To make it harder for traders to hord millions of a crafting material.

This data isn’t sitting on a PC. It’s sitting on a NetAPP or EMC etc. .
You have to keep these up to date standard policy is support skyrockets after 3 years. So you drop the money on a new system. 1 Petabyte is going to run you about a million bucks. Give or take a few hundred K. High speed networking and switches along with support contracts. Separate AC units to cool it. You got to power this stuff so generators and UPS to hold it till the generator is up and running. Salaries for guys to run this stuff.
Yeah you can just give away space it’s so cheap.

And that’s why they’ve advertised “Buy Once, Play Forever” correct?
And that’s why they currently advertise “Free DLC Every Two Weeks!” correct?
EDIT: You can argue the reality of the situation all you want — it’s an engineered situation based upon decisions ANet has made (i.e. no expansion, free 2-week content). What they’ve pushed forward as part of their sale’s pitch is what I’ve stated.

Yes, because that is all what it takes for the regular user.
But if suddenly every single player in the game stopped buying gems, the game would die within a couple of months.

I didn’t understand what you said. I already mean collections tab with craft mats and minis. For example I have 250 orichalcum ingot in my Collections > Common crafting mats section. It can’t go up to 500, stack size is still 250. I don’t mean normal bank tabs, I mean collections. I think this is a bug, I’ve sent a ticket to support.

Based on the randomness of the number 250, I would guess that it’s very likely that they used 1 byte. Everything about the game is streamlined to use minimum network resources.

Too bad they dont need anywhere close to 1 PB of space for the GW2 player database. There are only 450k active players and if each account needs a generous 10 MB each its only 4.5TB. Most accounts are probably so inactivate that they need even less.
You know, I uploaded like 1 TB of videos to my Youtube channels already and they are charging me nothing although I disabled all ads from my videos and channel.
Granted, Google is a much larger company than Anet, but they also store a much larger amount of data completly for free.

Oh, where did you get those numbers? I would love to see the source for those, because I was under the impression that no such numbers were ever going to be released, so feel free to link them.
And even if that was the case everything they have on their accounts still takes up space, even if they are not active.
Or are you going to claim that stuff suddenly loses their data-value simply because people aren’t using them?
Oh, but you do not use Google/Youtube for free.
You might not pay for it directly, but all the adds and stuff all around does indeed pay, and thus you are technically paying Google for all the data you have uploaded.

All except for the fact that 40% doesn’t work with account upgrades that I hope they will change.

I think ANet sold way over 450K boxes. Every single box is an account that is still stored on the server. Let’s say they sold 3M boxes, world wide.
We don’t know how much a default account takes, but let’s say that’s 5MB (for 5 characters), so 1MB per character. So, that’s at least 30TB.
Remember, no accounts are removed. So that when people log in after a year, they can just continue where they left off….
