I noticed on the front page of the GW2 site and the buy page ( https://buy.guildwars2.com/en/ ) that it lists a free upgrade to the Digital Deluxe edition. I’ve always wanted the mistfire wolf elite because I’m a completionist and was wondering if this means that accounts that already exist can upgrade for free or if this only works for new accounts bought during this weekend?

At this time, it appears this upgrade only takes effect for new accounts.

They may have a deal Sat or Sun that discounts the in-game upgrade which is bought with gems. Personally, I think it would be cool to offer current players a free upgrade (similar to the free Devil Horns). It was rough, reading that advertisement less than a week after purchasing the game >.<

I am also hoping for a discounted upgrade for existing players.

Even discounted would be OK, like 500 gems or something. Free would be better BUT i really don’t think they would ever do that – not when they don’t have to.

Fun stuff though, a free £20 upgrade (that’s how much that costs in the UK).

It’s only free if you pay full price for the game ($60), at most stores you can pick it up for $40 now, so yeah, you’ll be paying twice as much for the original upgrade ($70 or $10 to upgrade).

It’s an incentive for new players to buy, it would make no sense if you got it. Your reward for buying early was that you got to play it in the first 3 months. Just ask yourself this: if you had known this special was coming, would you have delayed buying the game until now? Probably not. Why? Because getting to play earlier has inherent value. Plus giving it away free now would be unfair to players who actually bought the deluxe edition on release.

Besides I don’t see how this is different from any other sale. All video games (and everything really) go down in price after release, and this sale is no exception.

I do not disagree with you, Jabberwock. Their site just says “Free Upgrade”, so I wanted to know exactly how it functioned.

As someone who was finally convinced to get the game during last weekend’s event, I would absolutely have waited. I’d much rather have the elite puppy skill, a minipet, and a bucket-o-influence than a couple of boosts.

Who in the world is expected to buy this? Everyone who’s interesting in playing GW2 at a $60 price point right now surely was last weekend, and any non-GW2-player buying someone else a copy as a gift would be doing it through a major retailer, not direct from Anet.

I guess if someone wanted five more character slots (with bonus influence for their guild), and wanted to throw money at Anet, it might kind of make sense. Ish.

If I had just bought the game during the refer-a-friend trial last weekend, and just one week later the deluxe edition would come at the price of the standard edition… well let’s just say I would be quite mad. Starting a dedicated action to get more people to buy the game and then, one week afterwards, present a much better sale… this cannot be an accident.

I believe the free upgrade to digital deluxe is limited to sales made this weekend, and is not a permanent price reduction. This may not make those who have recently purchased the game feel any better, but I really can’t fault ArenaNet for doing this as part of the weekend’s sales promotion.

I paid for mine with cash as part of the pre-purchase deal months before the game even launched. It’s been so long that I’m okay with some people getting a good deal for it over the weekend, especially if it entices more people to buy the game. Again, I can understand how people who may have bought it recently may feel upset, but this is equivalent to buying something a week before it goes on sale… you got the item you were after, just not at the best price possible due to bad timing.

What really sucks for me is that I had bought the game on the 23rd, not knowing about getting the deluxe version for free!!!!! I am really disappointed now since I could have gotten he deluxe version but instead I didn’t look, went to gamestop, got the game and looked online only to find that I could have gotten the deluxe edition!!! I HATE THIS!!! Please, can someone make an exception? I feel like I don’t even want to play anymore :’(

Nothing in the deluxe edition is really required, so please don’t let not having it ruin what should be a great experience for you as you go out and explore Tyria.

Thanks a lot for cheering me up, I guess I’ll get over it, I just can’t see why gamestop wouldn’t offer a free upgrade, unless It’s only available on this website….

Yeah, this would be a real gyp if new players get all those upgrades for free, while people who bought the game on day one are kittened.
