A combination of Black Friday sales and the new Makeover kits caused that the gem prices insanely increased. The five day high for 100 gems is 2g20s atm. Ofcourse, none of us wants to pay over 6g for something that you could get for like only 1g one month ago. It’s obvious this game needs some kind of cash currency control.
This is my idea how to control it: Add a merchant called ‘Gem Vendor’. At this vendor you can both sell and buy gems for a fixed price that will never (or rarely) change.
You can buy 100 gems for 90s (this is supposed to be a high price once). Once the price/100 gems nears 90s, people will start buying more and more gems from the vendor instead of buying from TP —-> less demand for gems —-> prices will drop.
The same goes for selling. You will be able to sell 100 gems for 35s. Once the selling price is nearing 35s on TP, people will start selling their gems at this vendor —-> Less supply —-> Prices will raise.

i think that this wont happen becouse Arena net makes their money on selling the game and selling gems. if the price for gems are to cheap ingame than every1 is going to buy them ingame instead of buying them with real money.

Not necessarely, the gem prices once were even lower than this. And as I said, the prices at the vendor are optinional and could be raised or lowered to fit Anet’s financial plan

The reason gems cost this much gold is because that’s how much people are willing to buy them for, if people didn’t want to pay that much the price would go down.

Gems are still too cheap. I for one wouldnt consider trading gems for gold at this rate.

Are you kidding me? Gems have never been this expensive before and as such that means the exchange rate from gems to gold means you get the most you can get…you’re waiting for another unprecedented inflation?

Its natural for real money currencies becoming more expensive as a game ages and people got more disposeable ingame currency. Of course it was cheaper when the game was new and noone had money.

I don’t understand why players complain about high gem prices. This is a player driven supply and demand economy. Why should ANet be regulating this? People spent actual money on the supply of gems. They can spend it however they like and that includes getting what they feel is a good value in terms of gold for the gems. The price will naturally go up as like any real world economy with inflation and more disposable income.

The gem system is all about convenience. If you value your time then you can spend real money on gems to get gold and save time. If you don’t value your time then grind the gold to buy the gems. The lack of subs require that income come from somewhere and I would prefer not to have Monster Energy Drink billboards in Lion’s Arch.

facepalm A-net wants high gem prices so people stop trading gold >gems and buy from them. Personally I have nothing against this, especially when it goes to developing new updates.

If I misunderstood you please correct me. Did you say that one of the issues that Anet has to " fix" was the banning of Bots? How is this an issue that needs fixing? Bots should be banned. As should anyone that buys Gold from RMT.

I think that you’re not entitled to gems. If you think that price is too high, then don’t buy them. Problem solved.

I didn’t say the banning of bots needed to be fixed, I simply pointed out the detrimental effect to banning them all at once, which is a unstable economy.
What Anet should have done is left the items that the Bots had listed in the TP in order to do 2 different things.

1) Absorb the excess gold which bots introduced into the system
2) Allow a smooth transition from it’s bot filled economic state into a “bot-less” economic state.

Right now because Anet didn’t predict (at least I hope they didn’t predict) that the banning of bots and the inclusion of grind-y Ascended back pieces increased the disparity between supply and demand rapidly.

They’ve already admitted that Ascended items didn’t turn out the way they wanted and are fixing that.

These create the symptom of increased gem value along with what the OP said: sales and makeover kits.

It would be sad if I supported bots. Very, very sad.

I also agree that gems are too cheap. One day I figured I’d throw a ten ANet’s way (just showing my appreciation and bending the market their way so they can continue making this game awesome) hoping to get massive quantities of gold from it. But it isn’t massive. It’s quite pathetic, really, compared to what I’ve seen in other games. (The price of PLEX?)

So I got some shades and a bank slot, instead.

If the price of gems rises to 4 or 5g per 100 gems, that’s when I’ll start buying gems to trade for gold.
