Me and two others run one of the larger guild on FC. of the 3 of us we have a total of 4 commander tags, and primarily we are a PvE guild. I hardly ever use my tag in WvW so naturally most of my suggestions are tied to organization of events and such. This after all was the main reason we bought it.

My suggestions are:
*Give me a setting to make the tag visible only to my guild.. This is really useful for guild puzzle and such
*Give me a unique chat color or something attention grabbing.. We originally used the item codes that let you link the purple text for organizational purposes in guild chat, but that has since been disabled.
*Allow me to grant a temporary tag to a guild mate.. this is particularly useful in Guild Bounty missions when somebody has found the target.
*Allow commanders to have larger parties.. parties of 5 are very constraining.

Really looking forward to seeing the results of this!

From a commander’s POV:

Commander Visibility

  • More options for the Color/Shape of the tag itself. This could be tied to functionality or rank of commanders but mainly targeted around organization. (This is an amazing idea, we tend to run 2 commanders to a map, and it would be nice for our squads to be able to follow the correct commander during a dual or split push based on his icon color)
  • Removal of buff display to enemies. As well as we should avoid doing skills/abilities that highlight the commander to enemies. (I agree to an extent that this is needed. Being a commander, I get single targeted constantly. But I could also see it as fair, in most wars snipers tended to single target commanders and officers to break the rank of their enemy, so it only makes sense for them to be able to do it here as well )
  • Ability to limit visibility to a sub group, party, guild, ect.. (This is an absolute must, I need my squad to be able to see my tag at all times, and I need the other map commander to see my tag. I would prefer that the remainder of the map not see it, as this would reduce the amount of “tag watching” occurring across servers…….. )
  • Tag sizing. (I debate this a bit as when you auto size the tag you can often lose the ability to see how far away something is but it was brought up a lot so listing it here) (I need to be able to make it a little bigger, as I am an Asuran, and with my tag this means that my tag is at most peoples head level, and not above like it should be……)
  • Add squads to LFG system. ( I am neither here nor there on this one…)

1.) How important is it to see your squad members as a different color and always visible on your map like party? (I would love to be able to see my squad as a different color and across the entire map at all times, that way I can track my scout positions, and progression of havoc squads)

Commander Tools

  • More detailed supply info that’s always up. (Increased radius) (Totally agree, sometimes it is hard to get everyone to stack and run the commands while avoiding being attacked. It would be very useful if this was provided constantly based on a certain radius)
  • Ability to create sub roles within a squad. (Agreed, I need to be able to assign a backup commander if I go down during a battle so that the tag switches to them, I could also really use havoc squad leaders while taking down the ruins etc……)
  • Current squad tools are rarely used. (50/50)
  • Seems to be some debates on buffs to followers, but there is a lot of good examples of ways to do that. (Up to you…..)
  • Squad size needs to be increased. ( agreed)
  • Ability to group up parties or other commanders to form different squad organization. ( agreed)
  • Improved chat suppression for commanders (Agreed, makes it hard to command when I get suppressed…..)
  • Commander announcements (yellow text across the screen (Agreed, this would make many things much easier)

2) I’ve always felt the best commander organization tool would be the ability to create events. Like drop a siege and the commander can set this is a build event then everyone gets Ui like build this flame ram 0/50 supply needed. Or Destroy this gate <show gate health bar>. Lets assume for this discussion there are no rewards to the events just a communication tool. Thoughts on commander created events?
(One of the best ideas I have seen yet, I can see this being very useful when training people on sieging a tower, or keep, or taking the ruins. Imagine if I could assign events to ruin locations)

Commander gating

  • Current 100g gate isn’t the cleanest gate. (Whole goal behind a gate is to limit the number of commanders out there. (Agreed, but tread very carefully on how it is implemented, you don’t want to be removing a bunch of tags that have already been earned…..)
  • Gating using WvW abilities seems to have some debate to it, but seems like something we should avoid.
  • Account bound commander tags vs character bound. (Totally Agree, I would love to be able to tag up on other characters if necessary, a commander is a person on the account, not the specific person)

One of the best suggestions:

When a commander uses a waypoint, a popup should be displayed to commander’s squad asking if they would like to use waypoint with the commander. Minimizing a common reason commanders get suppressed in mapchat and adding value to players who join a commander’s squad. Would also prevent me from having to say it in Voice like 3 – 5 times………

I don’t like the sound of this idea. I can see it now: constant spam from guild recruitment, trolls, and gold sellers flashing across the middle of my screen at all times.

Question
3) A guild gating system would be clean but require all commanders to be in a fairly active guild is this a fair gating system?

Question
4) What did I miss on this list

1) Player visibility would be handy especially when dealing with scouts, and with the ability to set roles in squad (perhaps as a drop down menu of player names) being able to change those tagged as scouts when they are rotated out, perhaps a different colour for players who’s roles are changed too, so scouts are one colour, officers another and a second in command is another, or the ability for different parties in a squad to have a different colour (maybe handly for guild missions where the squad need to become split-up)

2)I would have the commander event being an option a player can turn on and off with the default being on, but otherwise sounds like a solid system

3)I have no problem with the guild gating system for commanders, perhaps a commander tag can be purchased with guild influence which will enable smaller guilds to grind out the tags over time and still enable solo commanders to get theirs with help from friends
I will say that a minimal wvw ranking be used for commanders to be able to activate a public tag in wvw to prevent troll commanders (rank 100 would be fine) this enables players to still run in small groups and as a guild and learn to command before trying to lead a large group

4)The ability to nominate a second in command would be great so that those few times a commander gets dc’d the squad isnt left in disarray, also a commander admin role so that commanders can lead the group while a second person can designate scouts, havok squads etc (i would add these roles should be separate but be able to be given to the same person)

Also the ability to have more than 1 commander tag in a squad would be great too

Each tag comes with a commanders log, where they have to capture x amount of structures and having to complete these events with atleast 70% of their squad on map.

Once commanders log is complete (hence gaining leadership experience, from small scale to large scale) upon handing in their completed log they are then eligible to purchase next rank.

Example:

Red – Captain
35g – 10 players max – strike team
Must achieve the following to be eligible to purchase next rank
35hrs minimum, commanding at least 70% of their squad completing the following objectives:
capture 70 supply camps and 70 ruins Or 70 supply camps and 70 mercenary camps.

Green – Commander
75g – 30 players max – Guild Support group
Must achieve the following to be eligible to purchase next rank
75hrs minimum, commanding at least 70% of their squad completing the following objectives:
Capture 100 Towers and 100 Keeps and 100 supply camps

Blue – General
150g – 70 players max – battle field General
Must achieve the following to be eligible to purchase next rank
150hrs minimum, commanding at least 70% of their squad completing the following objectives:
Capture 250 towers and 250 keeps and 500 supply camps and 100 Stonemist castles and 250 Mercenary camps or 250 Ruins

Platinum – Legendary General of the [enter servers name]
300g
This rank has no extra abilities than a General (Blue tag), and is only for show as in recognition to the amount effort u have made in commanding your server, and the time taken in completing a generals log.

Each Rank is tied to the server you achieved it on, making transfers a little less frequent. therefore if you transfer to another server you hand ur log book in (which is tied to ur server) and get refunded the price. However if you decided to command on ur new server you will have to start from scratch again, this is stopping people from transferring in and stepping into a role where nobody knows them, " hey look at me i was commanding in tier 1 and have 200hrs under my belt, your all doing it wrong" Blah Blah Blah.

although I have just made up figures I hope you can see what my ideas are.

this idea not only makes use of small groups people trying to complete logs to promote themselves but also have large groups on map too for the other commanders to try and promote themselves too.

Where as ruins and mercenary camps are sometimes left alone and are not a massive necessity these ideas will bring them into the game more than they are.

People will now have incentive to fill up their squads as much as they can (or at least to 70%) even if your a General you still have incentive to push harder even if it means it wont affect your abilities at all its still an achievement.

PvE Commanders
could be done in a similar manner in regards to world bosses/events or tequatl with turret commanders etc (sry don’t know much about PvE lol) but just a suggestion.
