Crafting back packs - why?
The’re for showing crafting progress and skins.
So that’s it? I thought I read that you could store materials and craft? Says if you use em you lose the upgrade. Does that mean I have a portable crafting station?
Am I legendary yet!?
It means that if you use them to craft the next level of backpack you lose any upgrades you’ve used in them.
You get to choose the stats on the Exotic version. Haven’t checked the other ones, will check shortly here.
Edit: Checked the first level version and it lets you choose stats as well, so I assume it’s for all of them.

Too bad these don’t go up to Ascended quality. Still, they have the infusion, so it’s not that bad.
I’d say the main purpose is to provide a way for players still progressing through the levels to have a back item without relying on the extremely limited stat combinations you can get from the handful of story reward packs you get.
That said, they aren’t entirely useless for high-level players either, depending on the gear you’re currently using. They’re only level 78, which means you can’t slot in exotic jewel upgrades, BUT they have higher base stats and you can still slot in a level 65 rare jewel. Which actually makes them very slightly better than a normal level 80 exotic back item (you gain 6 stat points in the primary stat by using the new crafted backs with a rare jewel compared to an exotic with an exotic jewel, while keeping the same secondaries). Not to mention the infusion slot on top of that as a little added bonus.
Ascended still beats them, but there’d be something wrong if they were better than ascended.

Actually the backpacks are pretty good… the top level exotics are weird. They are level 78, but are more powerful than level 80 exotic backpacks. In fact, they are very close to ascended.
Edit numbers were wrong – can’t use exquisite jewels as the item is level 78…. For as easy and cheap as they are to craft, they are great for alts.

Yeah, for me, they are a godsend. Prior to the patch, I had basically nothing but crap backpieces. Good ones are hard to find or super expensive, more so if you want a specific stat that isn’t on one of those dang karma merchants.
No longer the case now.
They are meant for veteran players, who level an alt. As these are quite powerful, they speed up the leveling process a bit.

I made the artificer one last night and upgraded it to elegant.. They are super cute. I did see an infusion slot, so maybe in the future.. we can upgrade them to ascended? The easiest way to obtain a backpack for sure and I love how you can pick the stats.
The stats are higher the karma backs/ but you can’t use exotic gems…I think its still more then the Karma backs anyway tho
I like them, finally backpacks you can craft yourself. I might not use them but for me this is one of the top 10 best “features” for this update.
“Whose Charr is this?”- “Ted’s.”
“Who’s Ted?”- “Ted’s dead, baby. Ted’s dead.”
Too bad these don’t go up to Ascended quality. Still, they have the infusion, so it’s not that bad.
Yah, except they (ANET) really screwed them over by not making them level 80 (only level 78) you can’t add a level 80 enhancement, you can only add level 60 as well as the infusion.
That is really is a incredibly poorly thought out (????) decision. They should be lvl 80, not 78!!!!!
Can someone please list the available prefixes for the lvl 78 backpacks?

Seems like all of them, see screenshot.

As I posted earlier in the thread, it doesn’t even matter that they’re level 78, because they have higher base stats than a normal level 80 exotic and can still take a level 65 rare upgrade.
Which actually makes them BETTER than a level 80 exotic back item with an exotic jewel, not worse. Slightly, anyway.
Here’s the comparison numbers.
~ Level 80 Exotic Cultivated Vine , Berserker stats
+22 Power
+16 Precision
+16 Ferocity
~ Level 80 Exquisite Ruby Jewel

+47 Power

And that’s not even considering the extra infusion slot.
Other than being a little dorky looking, I would think these would be great for new players, much like the rest of the feature pack.
Haven’t checked them all, but the cook one is the cats meow in my book

Some of the models are just meant to be “fun” i think. Besides that, backpack armor with special skins are more or less a visual title rather than textual. So, I think it would be a nice thing if they did more of that.
Also, My level 80 used the level, what is it 5?, back that you get in either a story or level reward all the way up until I passed 80 some dozens of times and I did the story to receive the masterwork one. Being able to make these would have been great and I will definitely be using some of them on alts.
A large bear on my Norn, the little silver/purple box on my asuran mesmer, yea this could work out.
These are a win. They kind of balance out the enormously wasteful new insignias. These are an “attaboy” the insignias are an “aw $^&*”.

Thanks.
I appreciate your insight and info but they could have been much more helpful as lvl 80 regardless of the slight increase given over a exotic i your examples.
I personally think you should be able to upgrade them to an ascended level somehow. Since if you take away Mawdrey and the Spinal Blades, there are only 2 methods of getting an ascended backpiece, one is pure gold sink (books/quivers) and the other involves fractals (capacitor) adding a pure crafting method to that list would be nice.
Then they’d be super useful and a nice leveling companion
They might possibly get Ascended versions when r500 Chef/Jeweler comes out.
In the meantime, I made them just for the skins.

crafted gear tends be slightly better stats for its lvl/rarity than the normal stuff you find in game.. if they allowed us to then craft lvl 80 packs with the same or slightly higher stats, then it would make the packs you obtain via karma vendors like in CS, Straits etc pretty much obsolete so they have gone with a slightly lower level and lower upgrade slot.. but you do get the infusion slot as well so as others have said its likjely still the same if not marginally better then you lvl 80 counterparts
What I cant understand is the stat combis on the chef exotic packs.. Dire stats choice has the same as Dire+Rabid and there is a 5 stat pack that actually only gives you 3 stats .. did they screw the combinations up?

It seems to me like they just copied over the Ascended stat combination names (maybe because of the infusion slot), but since the packs aren’t ascended and thus don’t get 2 “sets” of stats (base stats and a second set of stats to simulate an upgrade which Ascended items can’t normally have) the names end up not making sense. I could be wrong, but that’s my impression anyway.
Are any of these even LVL 80 items? The ones I see are max 78.
I get this is about the new “leveling experience” but allowing a LVL 80 an option to craft a stat selectable Exotic backpiece is just out of the question? I guess I get that they have always had the backpiece be the “scavenger” hunt PitA item to obtain (something I still don’t fully understand), but how about some options that don’t take 5 times longer to obtain (or are 5x the cost) when the item actually provides the LEAST stats of a any other armor piece?. I’m almost convinced the entire item is some twisted inside joke the Dev’s snicker about on a regular basis.

They’re all level 78. But they’re also better than level 80 exotic back items anyway, so it doesn’t really matter for the most part (the only stat set that it negatively effects is Celestial, since there isn’t a level 65 rare jewel for Celestial stats). Read up a bit in the thread to see the comparisons of the two.
Intersting…..just assumed the stats would be inferior to the current LVL 80s I have from the Temples….nice info…thanks!

Yea, they have better overall stats than 80 exotic even when th 80 has a lvl 80 gem and the 78 has a lvl 65 gem. The crafting ones also have a single infusion slot, so it even helps with that. These are great for non main characters because they are really quite cheap to make as long as you already have the discipline leveled up.
I built about 5 of these this weekend.
Sure wish I could do something with the Temple ones I already had but ended up destroying them (RIP to the exotic jewels in them and the Karma I spent).

Could you have forged them?
Ah, I thought almost all the packs were ugly and bought quaggon and charr skins. They are way cuter.
The new backpacks are too large on my toons.

Only reason I would make on, seeing your comment, would be for the stats on some of my characters as I seriously don’t see any backpack which would fit a normal style. So I would hide it anyways. But might be an idea just to make it for the stats since my new main doesn’t have a normal backpiece yet. A placeholder till I get an ascended one that is
i like the backpacks but…..what I don’t like is that they are account bound… why make cool looking backpacks that cannot be sold or traded with guildies? You cant even recycle them nore use them in the mystic toilet. Nice concept..poor execution

I believe the idea is that they’re meant to represent your characters’ crafting abilities in some way. That’s why there are different ones for each craft instead of just a general crafted pack (which is all you’d need just for a variable stat item).
If you could just buy one off the TP, then it wouldn’t be representative of anything at all.
I crafted one and they are cheap. The one I made was better than the exotic one made from blade shards. I will be making more. If ugly, they can be reskinned. Most of my characters don’t have backpacks visible anyway.
