Legendary Dye
Dyes don’t require transmutation stones.

I know that. I was referring to if it was legendary armor and you wanted to change the look, that would take trans charges. If it was legendary dye, you wouldn’t.
There, I edited it to make my point more clear.

I may/may not have suggested this before. I do think legendary dyes are a possibility in the future, but I know there are some concerns about it.
For one, the game shouldn’t promote everyone looking like disco balls or unicorns. There comes a point where a character has too many special effects.
how about instead of legendary armor having a fixed skin (which will be super lame when we all start looking the same), instead the provide some other visual cue?
Perhaps legendary armors have exclusive dye options, like certain skybox textures similar to what we see with the greatswords? you can apply them to certain areas if you want, but to any skin you apply to your armor (as long as it’s legendary).
Or maybe they don’t change the appearance of your armor at all, but instead create new auras? they could give the player a trailing effects similar to the foefire gs or the legendary gs’s.
I’m just spitballing here. I’m sure there are plenty of ways they could make legendary armor still a status symbol without making it confirming all classes to a single skin.
However, if we just want stat-switching but no visual cues then they might as well just add that functionality to legendary armor, or maybe allow armor to be infused and weapons too, and add that ability to infused equipment.
I had almost exactly the same idea today, the main difference is my idea requires you have legendary armor (which uses any normal skin) to be able to use the special dyes.
edit: my point was to say I support your idea :P

Yeah, could see that being a problem. Maybe they could gate it, but making certain legendary dyes only craftable after you make its corresponding weapon. Like if I made Twilight, it would unlock the ability to make a Twilight dye. And maybe make it so you could only use one legendary dye at a time. Just some thoughts.
I think it’s a cool idea. As long as it isn’t a matter of 0.00001% chance of acquiring one through an unidentified crafted dye thing. T_T
It might be too much work though, unfortunately. Even if it’s just particle effects, making sure that they don’t look wonky for each armor set may be kind of a chore. I’m not sure what tools they have available for that sort of thing.

Oh yeah, it would be a pain for devs to make, for sure. I doubt they would ever go with the idea, with armor being easier to make. But one can dream.
It’s a workable idea, I think. Celestial already functions as a legendary dye.

This. Personally, after seeing their vision of Ascended Armor (Best in-game) I have little faith they would make Legendary Armor worth calling Legendary. Fancy effects have to stop at one point, because their comes a time where too much effects are only becoming more ugly. So the “Legendary Armor” would have to have a look worth calling legendary, where they would have 3 different styles of Light, Medium or Heavy armor which all just plainly look jaw-dropping. They can add subtle effect like for example COF dungeon armor has with the flames. (Just naming something random.) But more aura’s would only counter a beautiful design and style. I got some ideas for how they could fill some slots of Legendary Armor, but I’ll keep those to myself since I also have little faith Anet will implement them any time soon and use these ideas.

That’s the problem I see also. If we get dyes that mimic the legendaries and then add it to our armor, the glow effects could become to strong. Your character might look more like a “Will-O-Wisp” instead of a person. If they were going to do legendary dyes, it would have to be something different than what they already have. Patterns in the dye comes to mind, checkered or chevron for example. This might be a problem with textures in the armor though. Another thought would be colors that change hue in different ambient light. Similar to some car paint jobs that look black in low light and purple in well lit areas.
Inspiration is only as good as it’s interpreter

My fish got startled when i loaded that image up.
it means THEY got me for " neg criticism in clever disguise".
Know that it has been fun and I love ya all.
I’ve been toying with the idea of legendary dyes for a very long time.
I personally thing that a legendary dye set shouldn’t be focused around particle effects/glows considering this position is primarily taken by weapons. There are also some armours that already have a “glowiness” to them, or particle effect (the ones that spring to mind are the AP armour skins, the flamewalker/kissed/wrath skins and zodiac armours, although all of these the glowy parts are undyeable).
However, I do think that legendary dyes should apply some sort of texture or pattern to the dye region. I wasn’t necessarily thinking of the obvious tartan, stripes or polka dot dyes, but perhaps more “elegant” like floral patterns and intricate geometric patterns.
The only thing I haven’t really concluded upon this idea is how this will work with the current selection of dyes. Will the legendary dye (pattern) overlay on a currently unlocked dye colour that you have- can you mix and match the patterns with any dye you like? Or will the pattern be limited to just one colour? (Maybe this whole idea is too complex!)

But it’s only rare. We don’t even have exotic dyes yet.

That misses the point. I’m saying that ‘legendary’ effects might be able to be tied to dye items, not making a statement on their rarity
