I remember leveling my char 60-80 with cooking a while back but now I’m hearing you can only get 10 levels maxing out a crafting discipline. Did it change somewhere along the line or have I been hearing the wrong thing?

All crafts will level you 10 levels at base experience generated.

However, that is neglecting critical hits (wvw buffs, guild buffs, boosters, etc) and experience gained from that.

Normally:
1-100 = 1 level
100-200 = 2 levels
200-300 = 3 levels
300-400 = 4 levels

You will only ever get 10 levels from crafting (barring levels 1-15 as there is a different experience curve there).

The way your character earns experience from crafting is this:

Every time you fill the crafting bar (say going from 19→20) your character gains 1% of a level worth of experience. If you did 113→114 you would get 2% of a level and so on as RumStein has shown.

Discovery does not give your character bonus experience, it gives bonus CRAFTING experience which lets you fill the crafting level bars quicker but you will still only get the 1,2,3 or 4% per crafting level worth of character experience.

All the additional buffs from wvw, your guild and boosters will only increase the rate that you gain CRAFTING experience and so you will still only ever get 10 levels out of going 1→400 in a craft.

I believe you can get slightly more then 10 levels per 400 skill because of crits. I can’t say 100% certanty though. My thief level’d from lvl 5ish – 80 with crafting and I only maxed 2 skills. I used crit bonuses. I seem to recall some of those skills giving me 10 lvls and i still had 25 points to go that would have given me an additional lvl.

As to the OP though. It’s never been more then 10 levels and even if what I say is true about crits you wouldn’t be able to get 2x’s the XP from crits. So you must have leveled a different crafting skill as well or you are remembering wrong.

It’s best to think of both types of experience as being the same thing, just filling up two progress bars at different rates. When you critical or use a booster, you’re increasing the rate at which you gain crafting experience, which in turn increases the rate at which you gain regular experience, but you’re still limited to the same total experience from that crafting discipline.

You get 10 levels maxing a craft. Crit rate doesn’t matter. If you remember something different on your toon.. Well there’s the reason eyewitness testimony is considered unreliable.

I just want to comment that I believe it did change recently. I don’t know about 20 levels but it was definitely possible to get ~15 with crafting booster and wvw bonus. However, yesterday I got to 400 crafting 3 times on my alts and all three times I got 10 levels, and exactly 10 levels, no more no less. I used a crafting booster + 18% wvw the first time, but only got 10 levels. Disappointed, I did not use a booster on another alt, and I still got 10 levels. Granted, I leveled only cooking/artificer, so maybe those crafts are different from the others?(doubt it).

How recent is recently?

The booster doesn’t increase the character experience you gain from crafting, it increases the chance of gaining extra crafting experience, meaning you hit the next tier with less mats and such

I don’t remember clearly. But probably within the past month. I think the booster is meant to only give you extra crafting experience, but it doesn’t change the fact that people have gotten more than 10 levels by maxing a craft.

I got 6 levels from 200-400 a week after launch.

That’s what you get today also when you are going from 300 to 400. You get much less for the first 200 points.
