The Silver Doubloon Debacle
FYI, my research into scarlet events is:
1) decent loot
2) can’t on-demand and farm it
3) no timed defense events – that is events with an actual clock or effecively identical mechanic.
4) at least on my server, farmed by large zergs. Not completed, simply farmed -there’s nothing I can do to improve the impact scarlet has on the economy.
The best events for farming are timed defense events, because those spawn foes as you kill them. The more you kill, the more that spawn. As a defense event the foes may even come to you. Other defense events, you kill until n foes are killed, but timed defense events? You just keep farming and farming until that clock runs out.
The first two Balth events for centeral invasion are timed defense events— back2back impressive farms, if you have a Zerg of 40+.

I finally decided to go for Juggernaut but after seeing how much gold I need, it probably won’t ever happen. I can deal with 530g for The Colossus but another 500g for Silver Doubloons is just not going to happen.
I been playing since early access, have 4-lv80 and have a grand total of 6 Silver Doubloons to show. No, I have never camped JP chest because I didn’t think you HAVE to do that to get have a chance to obtain Silver Doubloon but now I know I’m completely wrong.
I will need to buy another slot to have lv25 alt, and run it to JP chest and leave it there for how ever long to take for me to get 244 Silver Doubloons OR I can spend all my play time and farm 500g to buy all 250 Silver Doubloons. I’m willing to bet that by the time I have 500g, it will not be 2g a piece anymore.
I understand free market, supply and demand, and all the good stuff. I have no problem with it whatsoever but give us other means to obtain this mats. Let us craft it or something.
(edited by zeus.2375)
Its a cosmetic, so its worth it if you like the skin, no matter the price. I definatly would build a juggernaut even if a stack silver doubloons would cost 1000g.
After the recent update when legendaries can change stats at whim and will always stay on the highest item level, it is no longer a cosmetic item.
The change made owning ANY legendary more convenient and flexible, but working to obtain one is still 90% about the looks.
Fate is just the weight of circumstances
That’s the way that lady luck dances
As someone who’s just two steps away from making my Juggernaut, which includes getting my hands on 200 silver doubloons, I have to agree that something needs to be done about this problem.
I’ve been following the progress on this for months. Back when I first got the idea to make my legendary, silver doubloons averaged out to 50 silver. If I had known the price on these would shoot up to almost 2 gold each, I would have got all I needed first and foremost. Right now, because of these, the Juggernaut is inarguably the most expensive and difficult legendary to make.
I understand that Legendaries are “legendary” for a reason, but this is flat out ridiculous. I absolutely refuse to pay for these doubloons as they are now, and I don’t care about people’s stupid “recipes” to make them in the MF, and I don’t care about which bags or jump puzzles drop them most often. For the sheer volume of what’s required we need an ingredient that we actually have the means to obtain. An ingredient, if I may also add, that is quite useless in itself.
Changing the recipe from doubloons to something else would be unfair, and I don’t support it. What I do want is an easier way to get the doubloons. Crafting them, from scratch, from transmute or whatever. I’ve already spent months working on Juggernaut and the thought of having to wait maybe a year or more to finish it not only puts me off from actually working on it, but from playing the game as well. So I really hope Anet is actually reading all these and has something planned to fix this problem, because it really is a problem. You wouldn’t have this many complaints if it wasn’t.
Please do something to make silver doubloons more obtainable. It makes no sense to require a stack of 250 of something that is so difficult to obtain — I have far more Onyx and Charged lodestones (30-40 of each) from just playing the game normally than I do of any doubloon, especially the silver variety. Further, there are reliable ways of obtaining said lodestones if you need a bunch. (Run a bunch of Crucible of Eternity, upgrade charged cores, etc.)
Just find a way to increase supply, please. I’d be fine with getting silver doubloons that are account bound, maybe through crafting, like transmogrifying a combination of other doubloon types to make silver ones affecting this precious gold sink.
I hope a developer posts a reply… really anything would be welcome at this point. It’s unfair to not give players SOME indication of where Anet stands on this issue, because we are just continually sitting around wondering if anything will happen as the months hopelessly tick away. It’s frustrating and disheartening.
I literally just sold all the T3 mats that I have saved over release so that I could afford to buy FIFTY FRICKIN DOUBLOONS! It angers me that I have to sell EIGHT (READ IT EIGHT) types of materials just so I can buy fifty of ONE type of rarer material. And do not tell me that the jumping puzzle method is how I should do it. That’s no way to play and i tried to do it and over three weeks (5-7 days a week) on four toons I got 2 doubloons. That is outrageous… and yes they were at the optimal level for that crap method.

Do you think is a coincidence that the price of Juggernaut precursor costs less respect other of same kind? Ask yourself, how much is the difference and why
In few words, let silver doubloon lower their selling prices and be prepared to see that same amount added to basic precursor price or anywhere in that crafting path
But hey, it is a cosmetic factor – everything goes
Kaosberg De Lay
Deflora Pulzelle
I don’t even mind but would love a Dev response even if it was “we are aware and looking into it”
Nearly done my stack so changing it now would suck for me. lol
Do you think is a coincidence that the price of Juggernaut precursor costs less respect other of same kind? Ask yourself, how much is the difference and why
Considering, that the price of Colossus stayed pretty much the same (with a slight increase) as when doubloons were cheap a dozen, i’d say that there’s no connection whatsoever.
Remember, remember, 15th of November

The price of the pre cursors depends on supply and demand and how desireable the Legendary is for people, Greatswords and staffs are the most popular weapons, so their price is higher.
Also Juggernaut has less appeal to people because it simply is more expensive to craft its specific gift, compared to the gift of Twilight, Sunrise or Bifrost, because of the 250 silver doubloons and the need for 150 lodestones compared to 100 lodestones in the other recipes.
Basically the amount of Juggernauts being crafted every month is not capped by the amount of Colossus´ being found or forged but the amount of Silver Doubloons that enter the economy every month.
The rise on price of Silver Doubloons started in late August, which is no coincidence in my opinion.
In August, alot of people farmed some wealth during the Pavilion and the invasions and instead of using their gold and mats to prepare for ascended weaponcrafting, they went for Legendary weapons.
This meant that way more Juggernauts were being crafted simultaneously, raising demand over supply, which naturally causes a price spike.
Normally, farmers would jump in and start farming in demand materials to ease a price spike but in the case of Silver Doubloons, this was hardly possible due to its methods of acquisition.
Personally i havent been monitoring lootbags that drop Silver Doubloons for about 3 weeks because i have been investing my gold into ascended armor and jeweler crafting. But this weekend i started again, not because of Silver Doubloons but because of the various cloth and ore those lootbags drop.
Having high valued items like SD on the loot table seems to stabilize profit margins.

I hear everyone’s concern with this matter and I have to agree that everyone has to look into this matter closely. We all want our legendary weapons but the price in the market will always go up. The market has always gone up because of updates and upgrades. Remember before how buying gems were cheaper? Its the same idea. Even if we can craft silver doubloons, the materials required to craft them will also go up to have it’s value equivalent to what it is now. Let’s say the value of silver is 1.5 gold right now and in order to craft them we need 2 copper and a dust. The price of copper doubloon will go up to 0.5 g and the dust for another 0.5 gold. I know this because I have been looking at how the market have moved. Charged lodestones for example, the total prices of 2 charged core, 1 elonian wine and 1 crystalline dust is close to or about equal of that 1 charged lodestone. The price of a simple T2 crafting material like wool, bolt of wool is priced at 6 silver and wool scraps at about 2.3 silver. As far is market is concerned, I think that it is moving the way it would. In addition to that I also want to point out that the cash value of these legendary weapons are still the same for those who like to pay to win. What I mean by that is buying gems and converting them to in game gold. As I had said above, the conversion value of gems and gold have gone up which then reflected on the value of items, like silver doubloons, in the game.
In regards to the silver doubloon’s availability. It is pretty accurate. It is a problem for high level character who farm by killing foes to obtain this item as drops/chest are scaled based on the level of the character. Low level characters will benefit from silver doubloon availability because of this. It is fair because high level characters can farm for charged lodestones which low level characters can not. So it’s like high level gets lodestones and low levels get doubloons. Both win in a sense as both materials can be sold and bought on the trading post as players who farm charged lodestone can sell their farm to buy silver doubloons and vice versa. Both spend time and effort equally, more or less.
Lastly, it also would not make sense to have the requirement of vial of quicksilver to be platinum because of its name.
I have to say, I think there is no solution to this problem rather than playing all aspects of the game. This includes playing with the current market and working with the mystic forge. Resetting the market is not even possible because of where it is now, and chances are even if they do, the prices of doubloons would go up in a matter of hours, possibly even minutes.
I would stick to playing hard to get my legendary.
Lastly, it also would not make sense to have the requirement of vial of quicksilver to be platinum because of its name.
Just thought I’d point out that Quicksilver is an archaic term for mercury. It has absolutely nothing to do with real silver either. Therefore, I see no problem with replacing the requirement with Platinum Doubloons; neither metal has any relation to mercury aside from the fact that they are both silver in colour, and it makes more sense for a Legendary gift to require high-end materials instead of lower ones.
After months of debating with myself (sounds cray, I know^^), I finally decided to go for Juggernaut on my guard since I don’t like the GS skins.
Got everything covered from normal playing except the doubloons.
Ok, checking TP and then: What kind of f***ed up sh** is this? If I wouldn’t already have equipped the colossus I would have selled it.
Now I am unsure wether to buy them or hope for a change..
If you farm 6 gold per hour then if the price of one silver doubloon is 2 gold, it’d take 83 hours of farming. Is that so bad?

Yes. Yes it is. Other than that your base premise of average gold/hour is wrong, it conflicts with everything this game wanted to distance itself from on a very fundamental level.

Here is a solution to all QQ’ers.
1. Make new characters so you have no open character slots.
2. Get those characters to Lions Arch
3. Park them at the jumping puzzle in the top right of the map
4. ??? (Get the chest on a daily basis)
5. Profit.
I have 7 characters sitting at that JP chest and i get about 1-4 Silver doubloons a day from this method.
You all can thank me later by showing me screenies of your juggernaut.

I think a better (but similar) idea is for those who are working for Juggernaut to advertise as much as possible that silver doubloons are available in this way and that silver doubloons are worth a lot of gold. That way the price of the doubloons will decrease as the supply increases.

Why does getting to level 21 matter? You make a level 1 character. Finish the beginning story. Go to WvW. Exit through the LA portal. Walk to the JP.

Because the loot you get from these chests depends on your level.
Level 21 is still not the best … you can get copper or silver. I never received a copper on my level 32 chest camper.
Allowing transmutation of Copper to Silver is still the best suggestion. Shifting to Platinum would kitten some people over (making their collections worthless), but allowing transmutation wouldn’t.
To those saying they spent lots on Juggy and making it easier would make it less special: the cost of Silver Doubloons has already fluctuated a huge amount. Back when I was collecting these Doubloons, they were around 30s a piece. Now, they’re way over 1g each. Does that mean one person’s Juggy is less special than another’s? No. Your Juggy is not defined by whether someone else can get one too.
It’s disproportionately expensive when compared with the other weapons, and it’s quite clear the Doubloons were not meant to be like this (Juggy still requires lodestones, after all, which are more clearly intended to be expensive mats).

Transmogrifying Copper to Silver Doubloons would be nothing more than a hotfix as i dont see how they are easier attainable than Silver Doubloons.

There is a Personal Story step where you can select a Copper Doubloon as a reward, I believe. It might even be on the way towards the BLK Story step farm, resulting in extra profit for those who bother to farm keys.
There needs to be a way to downgrade the doubloons as well (Plat→gold→silver) similar to the way vials/globs/shards from Fractals work.
Those all are still only hotfixes, though. There still need to be some semi-consistent way to obtain doubloons, on the similar level to how cores/lodestones can now be obtained from champ chests

I forged my Juggernaut when Silver Doubloons were at around 50s and was quite active in this topic to demonstrate that SD are available by other means than parking alts at jps.
Having 8 alts parked for this takes some dedication though and you get a plus1 from me. Even though I am strongly against this strategy for a reliable source of SD. Not your fault but Anets.

Last time i checked (end of december) Light Miners Bags were highly profitable btw, due to the raised value of cloth. I got 3.67 Silver Doubloons per stack and selling the other mats that dropped for 1c under the lowest seller, i even made a little profit without considering the SD, so i basically got them for free. My ratio of 3.67 SD per stack is based on 16500 Light Miners Bags opened over the course of 7 months.

So I have 7 toons parked at a jp, i got 15 doubloons in the first 4 days. That was a week and a half ago… i haven’t seen a single one in 9 days now out of any of my toons. Is my luck really that bad or do i need to re run the jp every so often? Anything i’m missing?
Just RNG at work. You got insanely lucky in those first 4 days, and now it seems you’re on a bad streak.

I created around 4 alts using lvl20 scrolls ( i got one slot free so im recycling ), and every one of them gotten 2-3 SD on first chest openings and then nothing in later weeks. Coincidence?
3 in the first 3 chest and nothing since …

Maybe diminishing return kicks in because it doesnt reset when you are not logged in?
Opening a chest takes a couple of seconds, over time it means you looted the same chest a hundred times withing a couple of minutes playing time.
Just a theory…

I assume you mean runes, not runs.
Spekks’ lab in Caledon forest, or the Pirate JP in LA, are easiest IMO. I think I have a total of 14 chars of the right levels on various JPs (but now mostly on those which give two runes per open, since I decided not to bother with monthly JPs). There’s a separate timer in addition to the daily timer — if you come back after kitten won’t have reset. I haven’t measured carefully how long it is, but I think it’s something like 12-15h.
I’m at around 90-100 silver doubloons … about 40% of the way. I was just curious about this — I don’t think it’s the most time-efficient way to get SDs, but it does seem to work, despite occasional stretches with few SDs returned.
Edit: “if you come back after kitten” → “if you come back after five hours, it”

I’m trying to get Silver Doubloons from JP chests. Either I’m doing it wrong, or the RNG god is making its displeasure known to me. I have a L80 parked at Crimson Plateau JP in Diessa Plateau (downlevels to L24). Another L80 at Swashbuckler’s Cove in Gendarran (downlevels to L30). I have two level 21-22 alts parked at Under New Management JP in Southsun Cove. I just moved a level 21 to the end chest of Angvar’s Trove guild mission in Snowden Drifts (thought I might get more loot there). I was doing several JPs a day for a few days in LA before it blew up. That makes five characters parked at chests, and I’m working on a sixth.
Nothing so far. Based on the rates people report in this thread, I was hoping for something by now. Am I doing this wrong, or is this just my usual bad luck? Could I be doing it more effectively than I am now?

Your level 80 won’t see Silver Doubloons (downleveling does not affect the loot here). You have to park a level 30ish character at a JP for a chance at the Silver Doubloons.

I was afraid of that. I almost feel like I’m being penalized for having multiple level 80s (yay! :P). So I’m looking at parking four alts at jumping puzzles. Maybe five, as that would give me enough character slots for each class. But no more. Probably not even worth the effort. I’ll have to buy most of them, anyway. Either that or become a trading post mogul :/.
Not the end of the world, but I think Silver Doubloons and the Juggernaut could use some attention.

Your 80s can still farm the Doubloons, just not from the JP. Try killing some medium leveled, blind, underground foes for the bags they carry while mining…

Good point. But I don’t need three level 80s for that XD. Two of them will just be collecting dust (as far as Silver Doubloons, anyway). I’ll try that and see how it goes. I’d be surprised if it’s better than buying them outright, though.

It is kind of time consuming, and the drop rate is pretty low, but the other materials from the bags are currently rising in price so it certainly isn’t the worst way to spend your time.

Thanks for the tips!
I’ve opened well over 1500 bags since the april 15 patch, bags of booty, light miner’s, small miner’s, bag of pilfered goods, (at least 250 of each) and i’ve literally only got a single silver doubloon which was from a small miner’s bag.
Has the drop rate from bags been nerfed really hard or what? Can anyone confirm?

Considering the supply of doubloons flooding the market in the last couple of days, i wouldnt think so.
Bag of pilfered goods has such a big loot table that its not worth it. Small and light Miners Bags are overpriced atm because they also yield destroyer slivers, which is used to craft potions of ascalonian mages. Somebody bought up all potions and slivers before the wvw tourney started (the potion is popular in wvw), which made the price and consumption of those miners bags rise as well. Destroyer slivers are back to normal but miners bags are still overpriced. A good side effect of the destroyer sliver spike is the added supply of silver doubloons to the market.
Right now, i would buy them directly, while they are cheap. I think i saw them dipping under 1g shortly a couple of days ago.
Bloin – Running around, tagging Keeps, getting whack on Scoobie Snacks.
On that tangent, is there some reason the Ascalonian Mage potion is popular in WvW?
