To duel Wupwup or not to duel Wupwup?
With skill points, there are more than enough on the map to buy all of your skills, plus you will continue to get them after you reach level 80; when you gain enough xp for level 81, you get a skill point and the xp counter is reset to lvl 80.
For the ascended weapons, you can buy the augury stone with a different character than the ones who make and/or use the weapon.
The increase between exotic and ascended is incremental at best; still, if you want best-in-class, it’s a lot easier and cheaper to make ascended weaponry than a legendary.
Wupwup is celestial stats, usually considered good only for Elementalists, who can actually make use of a boost to all things. For a Mesmer, you probably want to specialize.

I see that is good to know. I will probably do this at some point if needs be.

It is not so much a case of wanting the best so much as I just like the look of some of the ascended stuff. Plus I see me using it for a long time before ever getting the Legendary so the price factor does come into it as well. Plus I will probably only ever go for the one legendary on this character (sending the spare Gift of Exploration to another for Howler). So having at least one ascended will probably be a good idea if I find I don’t have a Zap when I reach that level. Plus it will be fun to try and craft it entirely from stuff I have gathered.
I will have to look into what celestial stats and build are but in terms of specializing I guess that would mean going for Soros’s Blade then? Or Tonn’s for the Vitality and Toughness over the Precision and Ferocity since power would remain the same? I just thought that if they stacked a +88 to all might give me more flexibility plus I like the colour purple. I guess this is why I should think about what build I am going to use first before deciding on weapons.
It depends on what you do with your mesmer. If its PvE you want assassins (Soros) or Zerker (Zojja).
If you are relatively close to making bolt, only make an ascended sword if you go S/S, which is what you should be doing in PvE. Note that GS is considered to be suboptimal on mesmer in dungeons, and typically you’ll want to use S/S and S/F to milk the best phantasm damage and melee DPS boosted 12% by empowering mantras.
If you have other questions on crafting, and ideal things to craft or ways to use your resources wisely to get what you want, don’t hesitate to PM me ingame, and we will chat.
Taking a break from GW2 to play various
Nintendo games..

OK thank you I will do. I look forward to chatting with you. And yes it will mostly be PvE but I will also be doing some WvW eventually. And not just for map completion.

Definitely, when you have control over what stats your best set of equipment will have (whether you make it or buy it) you should be following a plan for what stats and look you want. The appearance you can easily change with the wardrobe, so it’s good that you have the Wupwup weapon. You can craft the other weapon to the appropriate stats and then transmute it to look like the Wupwup one.

True. I think I will focus on making the stat weapon first (I am no wear near making them yet but hope to be) and then make the other to transmute later if I feel it necessary for my characters cosmetics. I will also probably go with either Soro or Tonn as well like nearlight.3064 suggested for the stats since I was planing to have a high crit Mesmer long before I even started to read up on the forums properly. Hence the mention of Soros’s Blade in my original post. What with her being in Ash legion and all. But I am not all that keen on the yellow.
Edit: Though that being said red is OK and Zojja’s added power over precision might be more useful we will have to see how things turn out. Plus it seems to be a fairly dark red which is a plus.

If you want to duel Wupwup you’ll need to go back to GW1.

Except I have never played GW1 so it would be more a first time thing than going back.
Do they plan on keep one for the foreseeable future? I know a I read a while ago they have no intention of shutting it down yet due to it not costing that much or something. But if the population gets too low I can see it happening eventually.
If they do I probably will have a go just to learn more of the lore.
Anyway back on topic sort of I just had another look at bolt. In order to make it I will an Artificer to make a gift of Gift of Lightning which makes me both lucky but also means I have a bit of a choice ahead of me in terms of what my second character’s profession will be.
Lucky because the only four I have an interest in playing are Mesmer (which I currently am), Ranger, Necromancer and Engineer. And there are only three legendaries that I actually want. Bolt, Howler and Frostfang. This means that I only need two fo my four planned characters to do full map completion but it does mean I have the choice of going Necro first and getting both Bolt and FrostFang first or going for Howler first via my self sufficient Ranger who will be able to make both gifts needed on their own.
So I will probably just stock everything else needed for Bolt and go the ascended route for the swords and transmute them to look like the Wupwup ones as stated before if I decide that I must have that look. Since I definitely want to play Ranger next and I can use my Mesmer to make the next character some melee weapons.
