Stumbled across this the other day when doing the Mystic Forge Daily.
Throw lvl 80 greens into Forge, get yellow.
Salvage Yellow, get Ecto. (or get lucky and get more)
Seems to be cheaper than just buying yellows for the same purpose. Even at the 20% conversion rate, 20 green on average = 1 yellow. Which seems to be around, if not lower than the cost of 1 yellow.
farm world bosses → farm FG → throw greens to MF → salvage yellows
i got like 25 ectos alone from world bosses yesterday
Other than a champ or dungeon run, I don’t usually have the opportunity to go for bosses. The only boss that seems to be up when I play is Teq, which may as well be “Let’s waste 15 minutes for no loot.” Occasionally I’ll get to do SB.
5 forges would require 16 greens. If you sold those 16 greens you will get enough gold to buy the rare or get very close buying the rare depending on the green in question. Much smaller risk.
On the other hand if you like gambling then go for the forge. You could get 5 rares from 5 forges.

Well I don’t know how long you play for, but the longest timer is ~4 hours if I recall (for claw, 3 hour wait and a little over an hour window). Most of the boss timers are between 1-2 hours with <40min window. Also you should go for FE if you have limited play time. It is up usually every 30-40min max (unless he wants to be bugged). Now if you’re playing at off hours and have no one to help, that I understand (which is another reason I hate the 15min timer).
Edit: Also 20 lvl 80 greens is 20-40s, where most rares go for ~30s or there abouts (gs are in the low 40s if I recall). As someone above pointed out, it’s a more sure thing to sell them (either vendor or on the tp) and just buy a rare to salvage (or just buy an ecto outright).
Another option is to look at the range of the item that you have (if non-80), look what it can salvage into, and check the raw mat prices. You may be able to sell the ore/wood for more than the green was worth, but that takes more work.

The best way I know of is to use BLSKs on exotics. It’s effortless, profitable and fast. The only catch of course is that you need lots of BLSKs, which can be slow to get if you’re collecting them over time from your daily reward.
Anyway, buy any exotic armor piece for which the runes are in high demand. Try eagle, dolyak, lyssa, etc. Put in a buy order > salvage with BLSK > deposit ectos and resell rune.
If you’re doing it right, your buy orders will get filled for less than the price of the rune, which you will resell to make back your money and then some. Profit + free ectos.

Golem is about the same rate as Fire Elemental but soloing the Golem is much easier.

soloing the golem? what server are you on? Even at 5am there are 50+ people at the golem. I don’t think i’ve ever seen less then 20 people at a world boss event no matter what time I play. Usually the zones go to overflow during prime time if you aren’t fast enough.
World bosses are failing regularly on Ring of Fire these days, even during prime time play.

There are usually people around at all times but sometimes events occur at the same time in such a way that everyone else happens to be at a different event. It makes sense since golem respawns quickly and the other ones takes 2-3 hours.
The Dredge Commissar also respawns ridiculously fast. I’ve seen him up no less than 3 times in half an hour when there’s sufficient people in Dredgehaunt Cliffs. The trigger seems to be anytime when Firebase Molensk and Fridgadr Lodge are capped by players, even if the Commissar was killed only 5 minutes ago.

Heh actually there seems to be no cooldown for the respawn. I forgot how it happened but there was one time where it respawned almost immediately and you are correct about those two events causing it to spawn.
The Ulgoth chain is also reasonably quick if it is at the last step otherwise it can take up to an hour to push it through but the nice thing about that one is that you will still get a decent amount of loot even if you don’t finish all of it. You do have to solo a couple of champions though.

I used to do this when farming the Scarlet invasions back in the summer. However, I sold the rares that were worth more on the TP than the going price of 1 ecto. I salvaged those worth less. So, made a few gold while getting some ecto.
When essence of luck was introduced I stopped doing this and began salvaging all blues/greens from drops to build up account MF. I am at 100% MF now, planning to get to 150%, then go back to my previous method.
At the moment cheapest green 80 weapon is 2 silver. Cheapest rare 80 weapon is 28 silver (that is direct buy prices).
So you can get 14 greens for the price of one rare.
Odds are that you will get at least one rare on average from that, but if you have bad toilet luck, you might not get one even after 20 or 30.
Just farming and saving the greens will use a lot of bag/bank space or you will be going to forge every 30 minutes. Costing you a lot of money for waypointing.
just run CoF p1 with all your alts 2x per day – you get full tokens
for this tokens buy yellow gloves and have more ectos than you ever need
