Q:
Will there be future silk changes?
John Smith will never say anything outright so as to prevent market shocks. You won’t get a response on that.
I guess I’ll just keep wasting storage space on scraps instead of bolts. I don’t trust things not to change based upon previous experience in GW2.
EDIT: however saying “it won’t change” in this case would provide stability instead of shock, don’t you agree? In fact, not saying anything may actually be worse…

Has there been a sudden change in the past for quantities required for refinement?
Also, I reckon the majority of the game population do not actively keep in mind a change in material requirements. People buy based on current need and prices. They don’t buy based on what can or will happen in the future involving X item.
So if Anet wants stabilility, they are best to say nothing at all. Saying something, even “it won’t change” sets a dangerous precedent for other requests for information, leading players to assume that if Anet does not acknowledge, something is coming up.

Yes there have been changes in refinement quantities. Are you being rhetorical or are you too deeply immersed in TP flipping to pay attention to crafting?

Neither. Are you biased in saving/making gold at the expense of the silk economy? Because by your tone it seems you will never take “no” for an answer for future silk changes.

My question is for an answer — not a specific answer.
I would take “no” for an answer on future silk changes. However I would like ANet to be upfront about it (as in before patch notes). Otherwise players who convert scraps to bolts could take a hit.
Based upon how the market for silk is reacting, I do expect changes. Until I hear from ANet, I think I’ll just keep my silk as scraps and use some of my alts as mules.

About 2 months ago they changed the requirement for 1 bolt of silk from 2 to 3 scraps.

This is probably all you’re going to get related to this matter:
“We do recognize that cloth prices are a bit high this is a factor of how hard it is to focus farm for leather and cloth. This is something we are looking into.”
https://forum-en.gw2archive.eu/forum/game/gw2/CDI-Character-Progression-Horizontal
Which doesn’t mean a whole lot since they said the same thing about precursors and it’s been well over a year.
They will probably increase the drop/salvage rates at some point. Maybe even give us a new means to collect cloth. I would not expect them to directly alter requirements and yields as it would be adversely unfair to people that crafted before hand. An increase in supply output would ease the market and players into the change.

You can speculate either direction and be equally likely to be wrong. If I were wanting to save some bank space but hedge the risk of a reduction I’d turn half my stash into bolts and sell the other half of my scraps at today’s inflated price.
A guess on my part is that silk will go down in price regardless of whether they change from 3/bolt to 2/bolt just because the bulk of the population that desires ascended armor will eventually sate their needs.
/disclosure: I have no position in silk or silk futures. I sell it as I get it because I’m planning on waiting for ascended armor to become old news before making my own.

I think there needs to be a rebalance. I think too much silk is required and not enough gossamer is required when crafting ascended.
My guess is that they will tone down the amount of Linen and Silk Bolts required for Damask (as that’s driving the demand at the moment). It would be the simplest and most efficient solution.
They would look like fools if they changed it back just a few months after changing it in the first place. So no, they won’t do it.
Despite their statements, they want you to grind; hence the original change from 2 scraps to 3 and also the requirement of 100 bolts instead of the expected 50.

Will never happen. The unique snowflakes that already crafted their bolts of Damask (and ascended light armors) will drown the forums with their outraged tears quicker than you can say “remove gemstore T3 cultural armor noaw!”

Well, from Vol’s quote above, they ARE looking at it. If they don’t reduce the requirements, then the most likely course of action is that they will increase the amount of Linen/Silk Scraps dropped from loot bags or salvaged from armor. (And possibly for all cloth scraps across the board.)

Anet’s “looking at it,” means they’re not even close to doing anything about it. In fact it probably means only that they’re literally looking at the post about the issue at that moment.
They really mucked up with the cloth materials haha, funny how Goss is cheaper than Silk at the moment.

Sadly I think thats probably right. even more sadly the current situation or at least the issues that have led to it were widely predicted by players well prior to the release of ascended armor. Plus there’s the fact that by making the damask contain 100 bolts of silk instead of 50 as in every other kittening ascended recipe they actually made the situation a helluva lot worse.

They obviously wanted to destroy the Silk oversupply, but I think they went a bit too far. They probably overestimated the amount of people who decided to go for Ascended armor. XD
As for whether they’ll do something about it, I’m still hopeful, but yeah, I’m not holding my breath. It’s still about a month or two before I think I’ll be ready to start Ascended crafting anyway.
The silk incident is just half of the damask incident…
One of the worst mistake of this game….
So many players anticipated that…
But the common reply to any objection was…
You are not an economist……
I m starting to wonder if would be a good thing for someone to ask “non speculators” what they think of gw2 economy.
For now 2 things are ruining this game:
Grinding
Market wars
Market wars are pushing grinding also for 95% players….with 5% with thousands gold.
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.

Do you have a link where Anet said that? Because i think you totally made this up.
Personally i also think that most of the supply of silk that was bought up prior to patch is already gone. Most of it went into promoting it into gossamer until everybody realized that we dont need that much gossamer.
Those who had large stocks of silk, already sold it back into the market and now the demand is just higher than supply so prices arent going down yet.
I doubt that there are people with thousands of silk still waiting to sell it.

I sold a bolt of Damask a day until the 26th and 3 more since I got back on the 1st. I’m happy to wait this one out and make Ascended armor when Damask, and the related cloth, prices have stabilized. To me it would be around the price of Deldrimor Steel as it currently stands.
I agree with Wanze’s assessment, and am therefore salvaging the hell out of any light armors I find (where I previously sold blues and greens when I reached 100% native MF).
