I think the big focus on PVP is that PVE is static. People have CoF1, Hotw1, Lupicus, and Subject Alpha down to a science. Eventually, PVE gets old, and requires constant updates.
PVP is continually dynamic, with new trends emerging in builds and competition without a bit of influence from Arenanet. Ultimately, PVP is what will help to sustain the game the longest, and I’ve seen what happens when a game doesn’t have a good PVP environment.
Though I do suggest that they make PVE better by making it more like PVP.
The best AI in the game imo — the practice professions in the Heart of the Mists.
Well, this at least explains why they apparently have no clue about how to balance professions in PvE.
^
no j/k … they obviously knew how to balance a lot of them in PvE in the first game … well except for Shadowform haha.
Also: Actually got one of them to comment on how they have no time for Skill Splits or think it would take really extreme cases to justify them …. and how that clashes with the latest Colin’s blog post on lots more new Skills/Traits being added to be unlocked after what we assume to be level 80? Not sure, need more info. At any rate, the answer was basically: “Those are two completely different issues”. Can’t wait to find out if they were, or weren’t different at all, once those new skills get added
.
Oh this is great:
The sPvP forums are specifically to discuss sPvP changes, or things that affect sPvP. If you would like to discuss PvE, please use the appropriate sub-forums.
Thanks!
10-1 odds they rarely ever leave their sPvP forum to discuss the issue in the “proper” forums now. …I wish I had an ivory tower. I’d decorate the wall with all these Ectos & Gemstones I got from doing everything EXCEPT Elite DUNGEONS :p (it used to be that elite areas were the only place you could find those things!).

From reading PvE forums I noticed that there are some players who are concerened about what this means for PvE content. I understand that it is not wise to take this comment too dramatically, but I think some clarification is in order.
Uh… There is no need for clarification. He clearly states that he’s in another country, with a bad connection, at late hours well past midnight, after working the entire day, and in that circunstance he prefers to read the sPvP forum, which is easier to grasp, than the dungeon forum.
Anyone who takes this as a “OMG, ArenaNet hates PvE!11!!!!” post is being ludicrous. If anything, Mr Sharp should not even bother reading the forum under that circunstance, and rather go do something pleasing with his free time.
treadmill, of being in that obvious pattern of every time I catch up you are going to
put another carrot in front of me” – Mike O’Brien right before Ascended weapons
“THe reason I quickly jump into the sPvP forums is because that’s usually the best place to talk overall game balance.”
usually
Unless being in China with a bad connection on the forums at 1:30am is the usual circumstance in which they check balances I don’t think this is any different behavior than the usual method, as stated in the post.
I just took a look into sPvP forum and was baffled how actice they are posting there.
They seem to have no interest in improving or balancing PvE but adding new (unbalanced) things into PvP so they can spend the next weeks on balancing the inbalance they added.
Which is surprising, considering PvP communities are generally pretty up there in terms of toxicity. Are we really that bad, that developers dont want to talk to us :’(?
I think it’s just that they don’t have any answers and would rather not begin a subject which they know they can either not finish or in which they would have to divulge more info that they don’t want to tell us

That’s terrific and all…
Now explain why it’s the ONLY PLACE their balance team ever posts anything close to ‘Developer Update’ type justifications (you remember those, right?) the other 51 weeks out of the year?
And Dub’s right…. they’re really really active there lately. A less informed player than yourself, would simply assume this PAX lan thingy is all they care about this year…

No argument is even needed, just loot at the red posts on the sPvP forum compared to the entire professions forums. It’s absurd. Players need feedback about the direction of flawed content, not how we will be rewarded for playing flawed content.

You really like having sharp pieces of broken glass falling on you don’t you?
The problem with PvE isn’t really skill balance anyway. Looks more like a failure by the people creating content to take into account the various skills available to all the different professions. Replacing ‘LF healer’ with ‘LF someone with reflects’ certainly wasn’t one of their best moves.
Then there are things which seems contradictory. There are too many situations where the way to increase your survivability is to increase your offensive stats rather than your defensive stats. The incoming damage is just so high that the defensive stats just meaningless and best defense is simply to kill the damage source reduce incoming damage to 0.
Ufortunately(?) none of this is actually new. Same problem existed in GW1. Except there it was because many of the mobs used the skills as players so any changes to skills resulted in changes to those mobs. In all there years that GW1 had been out there had been only 1 or 2 changes to the mobs to account for those skill changes.

and once again:
1st: PvE is not trivial, balance 2 professions and it becomes even frustrating.
2nD: if AI is so stupid and useless why on SPVP forums most complaints come from players have to fight AI?
Maybe that AI is not the only factor when it comes to challenge?
A PvE player is supposed to avoid a 1-2 second 1 shotting aoe.
A WWW player is considered uncapable of avoiding a 5,75 second aoe for half his health.
