A nice class for running dungones.
I don’t have a Thief so I can’t elaborate very much, but I find them to be quite helpful in dungeons. Their stealth and smoke skills come in handy in numerous situations. I love that Time Warp skill (if that’s what it’s called), great full party dps buff. Plus thieves usually seem to survive well while dealing admirable damage.
well the issue is nobody supports better than the guardian, and the Mesmer is one of the other elite supports to have because of Timewarp and other shennanigans.
if you’ve truly got bored of both, i would suggest the Elementalist as they can fill many supportive roles.
I find my mesmer to be really useful in dungeons. Even just chaos storm over some allies to give them random boons is nice. Time Warp gets my award for best elite in the game too, since it basically doubles your parties damage for however long it’ll last.
I have dungeoned as an ele as well and find that I can do some great support through water, but also do a good amount of damage. Ele is probably my favorite in dungeons so far.
I wouldn’t really recommend Ranger, from personal experience. I enjoy it from a damage perspective, but I don’t feel like I do a lot of support aside from my pets giving people might and regeneration.
I’ve just started Warrior and I’ve heard that a Shout or Banner warrior can actually give some decent support while still dealing a ton of damage.
Thief, Engie, Guardian, and necro I haven’t dungeoned with yet. I do find that having thieves in a group is helpful for the shadow refuge rez. Engie’s also have a really nice elite that could possibly be useful in dungeons. The one where they drop all the health and turrets. One of my set dungeon buddies is a necro and he just melts things. My other necro buddy is a well necro and he has some nice condition removal support.
My super set dungeon partner(bf irl) is a guardian and I don’t think I’d have as great of a time in dungeons w/o a guardian. The other day I did a run with 3 guardians(2 AH and one low leveled), a mesmer, and my ele. It was beautiful.
Maybe try to revamp your guardian with a new build. My bf was getting really bored, then he switched to an Altruistic Healing build with a hammer and he’s having a blast.
Necromancer, one word: epidemic.
I run a Necro as my main with a bleed condition build, the great thing with this class is if the group is targeting a single mob you can transfer all of its conditions to surrounding mobs which can do considerable damage before you even need to engage the rest of a pack. It can be somewhat limited on single targets but that said 25 stacks of bleed on anything is going to hurt!
Whilst I’m sure there are other viable dungeon builds this one for sure works great
I’d love it even more if mobs didn’t purge so much or so fast at some points.
My understanding is the guardian is a terrific group character. The warrior is biggest dps or can be very tankish. An elementalist is another high dps character and terrific in a group. I play a mesmer and I think its a terrific character then played well.

My main is an Elementalist, and my primary alt is a Guardian. And I think that Elementalist is just what you’re looking for. The Elementalist profession brings a lot of support, and decent damage to the table. It has a slightly steeper learning curve than most professions, but once you get the hang of it and find a build/gear setup you really like, it can be very rewarding. All the healing and boons, especially might stacking, are incredibly helpful to any group. And in AC Explorable we are pretty much a necessity for most paths because of Conjure Frost Bow.
All classes can be very good in dungeons with a proper build. I think whats more important is whether you would enjoy yourself playing them. Why dont you suggest a class and we provide sample builds?
If you want to make your mesmer very good in dungeons, consider mirror image staff boon build. For your elite bring mass quickness.
Since you already have a guard&mesmer, try one of these: shout/banner warr, condi/epidemic necro, ele. They all have a good mix from support/damage.
I’ll apologize in front and I mean no offence to all who play these. In my honest opinion, when considering dungeons, there are some classes that are useless or can be replaced with better alternatives.
Rangers get outdamaged both in melee and range, bad AoE options, limited to single target condition stacking (except traps). They bring the party a regen from healing spring and pet rez. Eles outshine them by a mountain when considering a ranged profession.
Thieves bring good damage, but they can’t handle melee pressure unless they’re built tanky. Warrior is better at clearing trash/keeping constant pressure and is overall one of the two “carry” classes in dungeons. They can survive hits that thieves can’t. Thieves have their niche uses from shadow refuge/venomshare, but overall the buffing power from a warrior compliments the party better. Useful as only DPS/spiker, but nothing more.
Engineers bring excellent support and damage, but sadly for them to be effective they require pretty static setup. Not so effective at higher lvls. Excellent profession in lower lvl dungeons though. It’s a high skillcap class and there are few who are effective with it.
Now, before you lynch me, I’ll say that no certain party setup/profession is required to run anything in GW2. Every party composition works and the player skill behind the class is always greater than the class mechanics. Most important is to have fun playing with the people you like and playing the way you like to.
Thief actualy brings the best damage.Anyway ,the game is about preventing getting hit and Thief does it best so don’t say melee is easier on Warrior because its simply not true. You’ll have a much easier time whit Thief than Warrior anytime of the day.
Judging by your description you’re looking for something around an elementalist or thief.
Thief is more offensive and Elementalist is more supportive. Both great proffesions for dungeons and really fun.
I have a level 80 gaurdian and ele and I have tons more fun on my ele than on my gaurdian. Gaurdian IMO is just a really boring class and while they are great to have in a dungeon I can’t see why anyone would want to run a dungeon as one.
I’m leveling a Mesmer now and while there are issues with aoe at times this class is a lot of fun to me like the ele is because there are many roles you can pay with it.
I prefer the staff with the evasive clone trait and the elasticity trait. You can bounce around conditions and tank and aoe with all the clones you have.
Time warp is probably my fav elite skill in the game and can really help out when the group is in a bad spot.
I also love how time warp can be used at gates in wvw.
It’s not really the profession that is important but the player’s knowledge and skill of the class they are playing as well as the gear they have.

Only sword has frontal cone auto and sword builds can’t match the damage of a warrior. Thief can spike better against single target and that is possible only if he has outside buffers/debuffers and isn’t focused, warrior can keep 25 stacks of might on it’s own, facetank a lot of stuff, heavy CC on demand and give the rest of the party pretty much permafury and loads of mightstacks. A glassthief can’t carry like a warrior or a guardian can, will die to a sneeze when focused in melee or AoE and is inferior in obliterating a huge group of trash like a GS warrior (example multiple AC breeders, CoE p2, dredge fractal, all Arah paths). Unavoidable conditions like burning on hit/retaliation/etc destroy a thief (example CoE story/exp golems), while a warrior at the same time can shrug it off by superior vitality. This is why a warrior can pressure better in melee. There’s a reason why most thieves swap to ranged on some bosses and why people prefer (or rather want) multiple warrs/heavys to multiple thieves in a party. And that was from a pure glasscannon viewpoint, on the other spectrum or even hybrid point of view, thief can’t even come close to the warr’s supportive powers.
Thief is a good class, but a selfish one, which fits ideally in either pvp or roamer/soloplay pve.
And OP, I’d go with either condi ele or necro (prepare for bugs though), they are loads of fun to play. And with ele you can always respec to bunker in pvp and dominate.

Wrong.
From a glass cannon perspective indeed,
You can’t facetank as a Warrior as much as you would wish too.If the mobs target you , even whit their superior vitality and armour ,they’ll go down just as easy.Thief never gets targeted whit stealth.
The most important fights are single targeted and single target DPS of a Warrior doesn’t even come close to Thief.
There is nothing I couldn’t melee whit my Thief and did it on my Warrior.
Aoe shortbow is better than greasword because you wont last much in melee against too many trash mobs. And don’t underestimate shortbow DPS.
As for support Thief is not selfish at all , I’d love to go into details but this is realy not the place.
Thief is a good class, but a selfish one, which fits ideally in either pvp or roamer/soloplay pve.
This is more due to play style choice than due to the profession. More thieves choose to play focused on themselves because thief support is harder to pull off.
Most of your post is generally true, but it is all behavioral instead of mechanical. Thieves aren’t mechanically worse, but your average thief is worse because it takes more input to get the same output.
Whether this is a good reason to play something else depends on how much effort you really want to put into it.

A 10/0/15/30/15 P/V/T shoutbuild can facetank pretty much anything, tried and tested. Currently on my extreme glassbuild I never switch out of melee, only except when singling out certain pulls. Superior AoE damage will deal with huge groups, it’s all about positioning and controlling the fight. I have a thief myself btw so I know the pros/cons firsthand. :P
Edit: About fight controlling and etc, here is a 2 months old video, where I played a balanced dps build (20/0/20/0/30) http://youtu.be/NYcWNcOr6hU , necro is fulltank. I’m playing extreme glass now, since it has double the damage (highest 100b crit I’ve seen in AC was 14.4k, ) and my skilllevel has increased a lot in those 2 months, so I can pull it off effectively.

So can any thief build with pistol whip and pie, to be fair. But, yes, heavier armor/hp professions are far more forgiving on getting hit.

And thats not glass cannon and that makes your damage bad.Glass Cannon Warrior is way less surviveable than a thief. There will be a lot of situation when you’ll be forced to retreat from melee or just die.You can’t stay in melee range against huge groups as a Glass Cannon Warrior.A few seconds whit endure pain maybe ,then run.
In fact , you were mentioning facetanking multiple breeders at a time , which is ridiculous. You can’t even survive 1 breeder at a time if he targets you whit auto atacks. The only chance of facetanking it is when he spawns the hatchlings.

No warrior should ever use Endure pain in PvE (maybe except meleeing lupi, but the bubble can be dodged out of anyways). Will record smth for you about the breeders, we do AC daily.

You can´t compare a thief with a warrior in melee in pve. True the thief has higher burst but you really don’t need burst in most dung encounters. Aside from that I can run a quite tanky build with the warrior and still dish out more sustained dps than I can with the thief.
And the time you’re stealthed you are losing dps. Shortbow sucks for dungeons aside from a couple of trash pulls. And besides its not uncommon that if you go in after you get back from stealth you get hit again and if you dont dodge all of those attacks most of them will kill you one shot.
Please don’t give the illusion that a thief is somehow better than a warrior at dungeons. That’s simply delusional. Thief has some cool and nice backup strategies that’s all.

I suppose you never played a Thief did you.Nah ,pretty sure you don’t.Pretty sure you’re just one of those Warrior fan boys who can’t see beyond their own class.
I’ll let you know what thing only tho.
Thief DPS is higher and sustainable. No ones talking about bursts.
no, I never played a thief…sigh My main is a thief so I don’t have any agendas in regards to saying the warrior tops the thief any day in dungeon content. I also have a warrior but my main is a thief.
It’s more you that can’t see past your own class. I came to an agreement (as lots and lots have) that the guardian and the warrior are the best dungeon classes. I’m not going to fight that as I know it’s true for the warrior part.

I wont argue whit you either.I’d be clearly wasting my time.
D/D elementalist has been the best tank for me in dungeons. I’ve been a guardian, thief, and mesmer so far, but none of them can beat a d/d ele’s ability to hold a group’s attention indefinitely. Over-the-top survivability, high mobility, decent damage with good mob control make it the most fun profession I’ve played yet.
WoW thanks for all the answers guys. I really appreciate all the answers.
And to grab Orion the Cursed idea. Could you guys post me typical build for Eles, Necros and Warrior and tell me what the build is good at ?
Bump.
My dungeon necro
http://gw2skills.net/editor/?fQEQNArYWjQaV6haea87JApCYP9w7xFP6BxDnMA;TgAgyCtosxYjwGrNObk2A
Good at: Damage over time to large targets. Staying alive. Blind & cripple to help tanks. Massive AoE burst (6 AoE skills).
Notes: Swap in spectral walk to run faster in dungeons.
I picked a Necro elite but feel free to replace with a racial elite if its available.

This wasn’t about facetanking, because this is obviously not a shoutbuild with tanky gear. This was from a balanced spec with full zerker gear and the point was to show how you can set your own pace while meleeing in dungeons. With glassbuild, you don’t need to facetank, you will kill them all fast enough, so they never become a problem. I can see from your previous posts that you used to have problem in meleeing with a warrior in lower lvls, maybe you’ve just had bad experience with that profession?
Do you mind posting a video of your or the average thief’s sustained dps against bosses? I’d like to compare the single target damage, then I’d know if and how big the cap between two professions are. My thief isn’t fully geared, so it’s not a fair comparison, atm she is totally lacking in single target sustained damage compared to a warr.
WoW thanks for all the answers guys. I really appreciate all the answers.
And to grab Orion the Cursed idea. Could you guys post me typical build for Eles, Necros and Warrior and tell me what the build is good at ?

Balanced/Support DPS specs are good to start with. Glass requires good party composition and good knowledge of your limits.
What I use on necro (could use a bit of tweaking, but overall it’s pretty fine):

Thief never gets targeted whit stealth.
Stealth =//= Immune.
A great deal of damage comes from AoE, or PBAoE, stealth just doesn’t matter for those. And if you want to maintain a steady damage output, you’ll be dropping out of stealth almost immediately.
I can see from your previous posts that you used to have problem in meleeing with a warrior in lower lvls, maybe you’ve just had bad experience with that profession?
I play a Warrior , didn’t tried it once and then came here trowing baseless statements about proffesions that I have no clue about unlike many of the people here on forum.
I’ve never claimed that Thief is a better Class for Dungeons than a Warrior either , thats a different topic.I’ve only stated that Thief DPS is higher and yes , sustainable. But you don’t Have to believe me.I don’t realy care what you people believe. If you didn’t already know you’re missing a lot. You’re welcome to play the class and learn for yourself. But don’t claim something that you’re not entirely sure its true.

And where did I state Stealth=Imunity
Nothing you can’t handle or dodge out of since AOE’s always have huge Warning signs. The main and only issue is getting targeted and stealthing periodicaly , even for a slight of a second , they loose interest in you.
well the issue is nobody supports better than the guardian, and the Mesmer is one of the other elite supports to have because of Timewarp and other shennanigans.
if you’ve truly got bored of both, i would suggest the Elementalist as they can fill many supportive roles.
So many people say that about Mesmer but it’s really not that great. Sure timewarp, Feedback, and Null field are great but the cooldowns are far too long compared to how long the spells stay active.

As I said earlier, I have a thief aswell. If I misunderstood you earlier about the subject we were discussing, then I apologize. As I understood from statements like “thief does more sustained damage and can stay better in melee range than a warrior” that a thief is a better melee class for dungeons. This was the basis for my warrior vs thief discussion with you.
I’m still curious about the sustained DPS a geared thief can push out, mind recording something? Not interested in burst with quickness or below 25% burst. All my gold is going in charged cores atm (20 stones from Sunrise .) and I haven’t fully geared my thief alt yet.

This sums up why I got bored with my Mesmer in dungones. 10 of super buffs and effects. 45 sec of spamming 1with some clones and shatters becaus else you will never use them.
